this was a lot more entertaining than some of these other street racing videos I've seen
@1400IntruderVS7 жыл бұрын
Thankfully it wasn't some weak ass roll on racing with overpriced late model imports that anyone with a lot of money could buy. This was a great era because most new cars sucked so young people making little more than minimum wage were able to purchase an old car with a big engine and build the rest themselves. Well... It was the Reagan era to be fare. The U.S. dollar hit an all time high so even people with little of it had more purchasing power. Gas was less than a dollar a gallon and you buy a big cheesburger, fries and a drink at a diner for like four bucks. A bag of chips, a candy bar and a soda was less than a dollar.

Some of these had over 500 hp....That 69 Charger if it was a 440 they were 410 hp stock..as the 375 was a bogus number to throw off insurance rates,my dead stock 68 Charger RT 440 4bbl,3.23 gear ran 12.80's with bias ply pro tracs in 1976 ,car was bone stock except mufflers..it still spun past 80 feet...Remember old road tests were bogus due to 205/70/14 tires with zero traction...They are all minimum 1 second off the recorded times up to 3..383 stock was closer to 375 ..with cam/heads well over 400,I know I had a 69 Charger 383 with a cam and heads done 462 hp it made..back in 1979..I kept my 68 Charger RT stock..I finally rebuilt it a few years ago and it is as quick as my 392 8 speed Challenger I had..I ran a 11.99 and a 12.12 in the 1/4 with the 392 ,I used drag radials..(now have a Hellcat and my 68 still)..

I too, used to roam the mean streets of Kokomo in the early 80's in a red 66 bb Chevelle. Mine would be considered a rat rod by today's standards but back then it was the coolest car a high school kid could have. It had a 454 from a wrecked 74 Caprice with headers and glasspacks bolted right on the collectors and that's it for exhaust, black steel wheels on front, 10 inch wide chrome reverse wheels out back with a set of N50-15 Mickey Thompson's and air shocks of course. It wasn't real fast but it sounded like it was!

Seeing that Chevelle in the ditch actually reminded me of why I'm fine with having an 03 Mitsubishi Galant with a 4-banger as my first car. If my dad wanted me to have a car like he did when he was young, I'd be mortified if I wrecked it, even if half of the body's been eaten by rust already. Muscle cars are my favorite breed of vehicle, but it's only natural that you're gonna want to floor it if your motor's pushing 500lb-ft of torque and you've got Van Halen blaring through the speakers.

Musclecars retained their popularity in part because they were inexpensive old cars that usually were faster than what was being driven off showroom floor back in the eighties. Now anyone with decent credit can buy a car that is pretty much supercar spec compared to what was new back then. My '67 Firebird had 400 with a better cam, headers and a 750 Holley and it was enough to leave just everything that was new in eighties struggling to keep up.
