a lot can be said of a person that shares their talent with the world, expecting nothing in return. Thanks.

I'm having trouble so I go right to your videos. My 85 hasn't run in 5 yrs, been sitting in a shed. Got it running. Have some smoke. Checked compression, have 70 on the front cylinder, 80 on the back. I suspect worn rings or worse. Idles fine, pulls fine, just smokes and wet pipes.

Your vids are great, and knowledge level off the charts. The Sportster iron head is my favorite bike. Had a 1976 XLCH I bought as a true basket case in 1981 (old fart). Had a local shop rebuild it. 30 over, new valves, pistons etc. 1-3/4" drag pipes (pipes were mine). In 81 the cost was $2,700 for machining & new internals. Ran perfect and started on the 1st. kick 9 out 10 times, witch dumbfounded my friends. I miss that bike everyday. hope to get one again. Love that Dog. what's it's name?

i don't know what the big deal is with running the big twin heads on a sportster. they run faster with the sportster heads on them. i was running 125mph at the drags and over 150mph at the lakes with a 90ci kickstart 1957 sportster motor back in the early to mid 90's. i rode it on the street too. i was right behind the pros at the drags and they all had evos. tatro

38mm mikuni carb, dyna 2000i ignition and a good set of 1-3/4" exhaust pipes. p" cams or some mild aftermarket cams and some port work would be next. tatro

do you have any video of porting an ironhead? I've watched the aluminum head porting videos and wondered if it's any different. I'm working on an early 84 1000cc sportster, any tips?

hi tart love the vids, just bought a 79 xlh 1000 electric start, wondering if its worth putting universal oil filter on? as doesn't have one from factory, will it cause complications with oil pump? thanks from Australia

harley had one on the left side lower front motor mount as an option and the aftermarket has them too. you will see it on some of the xl's i work on. tatro

I have a 1980 xls 1000. It was stolen from me and I ended up getting it back years later totally trashed. I am now building a rigid bobber with it. The motor needs an educated person to go through it and find out what parts are missing and put it back together. If I was to ship it over what would be a ballpark figure to do something like that like low price and a high price? I am in the Portland Oregon area, not sure where you are.

Hi tatro! Love the vids! I've been looking all over the internet and can't find much info on 79 xlh 1000 sportster in general. Just wondering with the rear caliper is ment to have movement up and down or is it ment to be fix to the swing arm bracket? Thanks tatro
@TatroMachine7 жыл бұрын
the stock caliper is a floating caliper. that is that it slides side to side as the pads wear. the up and down movement means that the caliper is worn out like they always are. the front flt caliper is the same from 1979-83. look at my single cylinder race bike and how i put a wilwood racing caliper onto it. the bike is a 1979 xl. i picked up over 10mph when i switch to the race caliper. tatro

This build is very interesting but I can’t find the episode where you machine the lead from the flywheels. The melting and pour of the lead was great! I want to see it finished if possible. The Tatro Way. Did you get that episode on video?

What would make a 78 shovelhead smoke sometimes and not other times. it does it only out of rear cylinder.

if the starter is sticking out past the cam & sprocket cover its an 80 sporty if it tucked in its an 81. i had an 80. 79, 80, 81 r terrible yrs for sportys. at least it wasn't that fugly 79 wit the rear master cylinder at da top of the front sprocket cover w that funky shaped rear pipe.

Wrong that was below the rings it was in the block, something was coming loose in the bottom end and coming up from the crank and cams could have been bearing material. Not the breathers on the carb or the crank in my opinion.
