The initial shake down ride after a backyard rescue. The bike was a mostly complet bike but had a locked up cylinder. After struggling for weeks to extract the swingarm bolt, a process of slowly cleaning, categorizing parts, painting, and reassembling of the frame, controls, electronics, and engine was completed. Engine redone from Piston, cylinder bore, crank rebuild, bearing replacement, suspension rebuild, and engine and frame paint. It took about a year working off and on but it's mechanically complete with tuning of the RM250G in process. Some cosmetic work in the plastic and graphics are still to come.

I ran Rmx250s back in the 90s racing my local Texas enduro circuit. TSCEC. The '86 was very similar to my '90 and '95 Rmxs. It helped in the rebuild for sure. My first bike was an '86 Pe175. I currently also have a '17 Rmx450z that I'm gradually turning into a dual sport. I ride and race it occasionally if needed. I'm still mostly a two stroke guy with my current ride... A very nice '22 Beta 300rr re which I love.

Killer video, nice to see an oldie being ridden! Nothing beats that crisp 2t brap, can't wait to fire mine! Sticking it in a RM125E frame with a 83 swing arm and model F shock. Should be interesting 🤪

I went for a budget survivor bike build and fixed just what needed fixing. I had to bore the cylinder since the piston shattered and stuck the crank. Also got a new crank rods and had the original rebuilt. Beside those things everything else but the shock and orignal tank was good to go. Took a minute...

I hope you don't mind if I give some advice, for starters make sure your clutch is not slipping and that the cable is free an easy, you need a little free play in the clutch, the lever should not be so far away that its hard to reach with your fingies, the reason you need your clutch right is so you have immediate power when you want it, you need the power to come on instantly for jumping, you need to be accelerating over the jumps or the front wheel will roll down the back side of the jump, and rip your arms out of there sockets, the bike needs to stay level over the jumps and this is achieved by constant acceleration, acceleration will keep the front of the bike lifting as you go over the jump, braking or decelerating will pitch the front down, if you are having trouble with the clutch dont use it. only use it for starts and stops only, its designed to be used that way, if it wont go up through the gears just roll off the throttle a bit and it will pop into the next one. happy biking amegos.

Never been a MX guy. This dog is probably too old to learn new tricks. Just a shakedown ride with bad front brake pads. I changed them out with some ancient EBC pads still in the packing and presto chango I've got front brakes. Thanks

I raced the same bike back in the late 80. My favourite moto cross bike. Your right about the engine, it like a big 125, needs to be revved to get the best out of it. I remember the front brake being pretty good. Rather jealous. Enjoy.

The pads were ancient and probably also needed to redo the fluid again. It's kind of been sitting since this ride, so I need to get back to it sooner than later...

Finally changed the 30 year old front brake pads, and presto chango I've got brakes in front. The "new" pads were ancient EBC pads still in the package but were just what that front brake needed. Who'd of known? ;)

if seal has worn on crank a small groove rather than replace it take a 300 winchester mag fired case and cut bottle neck off and tap it on crank. then cut off primer back side. tap on and it will stay and give u a new surface. i have one here i bougt in 1986 and it is restored and very fast. its a R andD made bike by rudy dickerson. race number on it is 770

I used a speedi-sleeve to do the same thing. cost about $12 and was a perfect fit.

I have a 87 suzuki LT 250R quadracer. the motors are exactly the same. you could take the top end off your RM and it would bolt on my case

When I was working on the rebuild I saw that this engine lasted 5 or 6 years in the quads. It was a one year only motor in '86 on my Rm250. Thanks.

I wasn't at all comfy being a first ride with plenty of adjustments after a full rebuild. Super weak front brake was a bummer also. Fixed that with some new brake pads. Old school sit in the seat was kinda weird...

Same for my 84, it like to Rev as much as possible 😅 But I like to take it easy, don't want to trash a almost 40 year old bike 🤞

And the older bikes aren't that easy to ride either, they are heavy and feels like a boat some times 😅

I had a clapped out '88 rm250 for a couple of months before it got stolen. This engine feels good to me even though I haven't had a 250 since a '98 YZ250 that I modded for enduros. Surprisingly the air forks here felt very good to me. The drum brake works but I haven't really tested it. Trying to finish the cosmetics now and then its destined to be sold since I'm no motocrosser.
