small tip to anyone that doesn't know the star head bolt with the washer on the side of the case is for proper oil level if you don't have a measuring cup or are toping up oil. You level bike out and fill up till oil come out the hole also works for if you put too much oil in.

The RM motor of this generation was very chattery at idle which makes the sound that you have described. The clutch hub was chattery at idle, and the motor used a very specific $35 NGK spark plug due to the very high compression. Matching up the violent internal combustion with the clunky clutch hub made the engine sound that you have described. They were good bikes for the average rider, and a Hinson clutch made them even better.

I had a 1982 Suzuki RM465 that started 1st kick every time when it was warm, and 2nd kick every time when it was cold. Bought it brand new in 1982 for $2,495, rode it for 8 years until 1990, and all I ever did to it was put a new top end on it every winter. Best bike I ever had, never broke down, and it was a beast. It was so fast the front wheel was hardly ever on the ground, except in 5th gear.

150 psi is not really good compression... it's on the low end for a 250. Needs new rings or cylinder has wear on it like gouges. These bikes are usually 180-200 lbs depending on your elevation like at sea level. Better check the crank and measure cylinder for spec, it sounds like it has a knock when running like piston slap

Instead of trying to hammer it together, he should've gotten it as close as possible, then pinch the seam together with a couple sets of small vice grips. That way, he wouldn't need to fill the gap in with mig wire instead of doing it right. Plus, instead of trying to weld it by going from bottom to top, he should've started at the opposite end, then dragged the tip down towards himself. He would've gotten a much cleaner and better weld that way.

When you were kicking it over, at the beginning, it looked like it was blowing carbon out the exhaust to head connection. I just started watching the vid, will see if there is anything else about that. Chain looks expensive, maybe a DID gold chain or similar? Overall this is a nice looking RM 250. I would love to score a 2007 rm250, which I believe is the last year Suzuki made full size 2 strokes. Could be wrong on that year though.

You got great neighbors! Back when I had off road bikes and after buying a used RM80 for fun, I found a place to ride that had, what I thought of as some good natural sound absorption. Within the first five minutes this little old lady comes out and asks me not to ride in the area because her son died in a motorcycle accident. I mean, what do you say to that? I had nowhere else to ride. Then, shortly after that another neighbor asked if he could take my bike to the beach for a few days. I let him. A hurricane hit a few days later and managed to total the bike, which I never saw again. He didn’t even have the respect to at least bring back what was left of my bike. Don’t underestimate good neighbors. They’re not easy to come by.

1999 AMA Nationals were won on the 99 model, the 2000 model was made a little better. The RM motor of this generation was very chattery at idle which makes the sound that you might hear. The clutch hub was chattery at idle, and the motor used a very specific $35 NGK spark plug due to the very high compression. Matching up the violent internal combustion with the clunky clutch hub made the engine sound that you might hear. They were good bikes for the average rider, and a Hinson clutch made them even better. These motors had great potential once all the casting flaws were removed from the intake, exhaust, and transfer ports which made much better airflow and scavenging. These bikes were rippers, and they’re much more rare than the CR and YZ with greater long term collector potential if you have an OEM perfect one. Good luck finding a perfect one though, they don’t really exist.

Make sure u run a strong plug I have the same bike and they are very high compression and if u don't have the right plug it will break the plug tip and could damage the bike

Hi vintage! I’m a 22 year old with no experience in motocross and very little money I live in the uk and I have motocross gear but no bike, I don’t come from a financialy stable background and times are just tough, anything you can suggest as what first bike I should get and if I need a trainer or should I just get out on track during practice days and learn that way? Thanks

When welding with a fluxcore MIG you must drag or pull the bead, not push as you were doing. Also, when checking oil with a zip tie use a WHITE tie, not black.

White zip ties are just as common as black and much easier to read oil level/color.
