Tomcats would have launched with 6 Phoenixes if the existence of the carrier was on the line. Carrying 6 AIM-54s was only an issue when recovering, as the weight of the missiles plus fuel put the aircraft over the arrested recovery weight limit. Deliberately landing on low fuel states or ditching million dollar missiles into the ocean is frowned upon in peacetime, but when you know you're going to be shooting them off at bad guys, you take all of them you can carry. There's a reason it was called the "armageddon loadout".

And all the Phoenixes would have missed. The Super Hornet will notch out the Phoenix quite easily and then turned back in on the Tomcats and launch AIM-120D-7s. If they hadn’t launched already. Goodnight Tomcats.

These always spark a tinge of nostalgia with me. When I graduated high school in 1986, I watched Top Gun in the theaters and enlisted the following day. Didn't even tell my parents who were furious. They had my college path all laid out and I threw a wrench into the works. But when I joined the fleet I was assigned the Theodore Roosevelt CVN-71 which had just been commissioned and went to the G-3 Division of the Weapons Dept which were know as Mag Rats. We worked all the weapons magazines onboard that kept all the boom booms that the aircraft carried. Missiles, rockets, mines, torpedoes and everything from the 20mm cannon rounds to the shells that blew off the canopies when they ejected. ALL BOOM BOOMS. The G-2 Division took care of the small arms like pistols, shotguns, etc. Basically when they load sheet came down and told us what was needed for the day's missions. We would break out the ordinance, assemble them, put them on their special carrier trucks then sent them up the weapon elevators (G-4 Division were responsible) then reverse the process when they didn't shoot or drop the ordinance. I was in the forward missile magazine trunk from 1986 to 1990. We worked with the AIM-54C, the AIM-7M and the AIM-9L, although the M versions were just getting to the fleet in small numbers. If there was a problem on the flight deck, I was a QA certified AO3 and I would go up to see if I could fix the problem. The aircrews were hard on equipment. Like a broken control fin on a Sidewinder, a broken ARM/DEARM handle, things like that. Sorry this comment is a dissertation, but like I said, these videos really hit home with me, thanks for making them so well!

Hey Cap, it would be great if you could also add any of the newer Standard Missiles, like the SM-2MR Block IIIB, SM-3 or SM-6 so that the ships also get an upgrade. Another interesting thing to add would be the upgraded version of the Patriot with the AN/MPQ-65A AESA radar (which additionally has two smaller arrays in the rear to enable it to scan 360°), PAC-2 GEM+ and PAC-3 MSE missiles. I think it would be a great addition because, from what I’ve read, the current configuration seems to be a very capable air defense system and adding it could help bridge the gap between BLUFOR and REDFOR SAM systems.

I love the F14 in all of its configurations. However, it was an interceptor designed for primarily 1 mission: hunting down multiple slower moving propeller driven Soviet Heavy Bombers carrying nuclear weapons during the Cold War. When needed it could fight and go toe to toe with other fighters its size but the AIM-54 Phoenix's were designed for taking those heavy bombers out. Not so much other smaller and more nimble fighters. Cool to see them give it a go and no surprise many Phoenix's missed their targetsin the simulation but unless completely upgraded into a 21st century Super Tomcat like they were potentially intended, they probably wouldn't survive long in a real 2020's plus engagement.

Its the different style of launchers, the 1990s launchers were steam driving, the 2020s launchers use electromagnetic system. I also believe the tomcat is heavier, and with a lot less thrust, so that catapults need a higher steam pressure to create more speed to launch the tomcat.

Entertaining as always.😄 I believe the largest restriction you face consistently at this moment is the AI's group programming and basic mission editor functionality (telling jets to fly to waypoint 1, do an action, then go and do something else after that). I think proper AI jets would be more conservative with their missiles rather than essentially spamming them off at four to who knows how many per enemy target. That's the biggest mystery to everyone outside of the actual military, as to how their tactics work in the real world and how they would set their engagement policy based on perceived tech advantage. We have to keep in mind, that a professional volunteer military such as the US essentially utilizes their entire career training to become better war-time aviators and that includes working together with their fellow pilots. When it comes to an actual battle, I believe the adjustment would be super-human in nature with the pilots and analysts quickly evaluating the real-time battle results and adjusting their tactics on the fly. Then we also see jets rushing into the SM-2 network of the enemy fleet when in reality they would turn back and either land when possible or fly CAP somewhere to harass any incoming jets. Given this specific battle, a better AI along with the implementation of a more accurate datalink (resulting in enhanced lethality for each AIM-120 missile) would essentially reinforce the modern fleet's victory. They would have lost fewer jets throughout the match since they wouldn't be flying into SM-2s/reducing their friendly CAP numbers for later on in the battle, and would also likely have AIM-120Ds to spare for the incoming anti-ship F-18s. The USN gets a lot scarier when you factor in how old these ship models are versus the modern capabilities. The newer SM blocks used for the modern fleet add numerous improvements to sensors and propulsion, particularly the use of the SM-6 (reported range of 240km). Also, does anyone know the specific variant of SM-2 modeled in DCS, as it appears to be one of the older variants with a significantly shorter range (compared to SM-2 currently deployed)? Then you add on the fact they would be carrying Tomahawks (including the capability to hit moving land and sea targets) and given the SM-series of missiles are capable of hitting moving land and sea targets as well. There's also enhanced SAM quantity for defensive purposes, due to these DCS Arleigh Burkes not being equipped with the RIM-162 ESSM going Mach 4+ at an approximate range of 50km, which is quad packed into a single Mk 41 VLS cell (just equipping 10 out of 90/96/122 VLS, depending on the ship model, would result in an additional 30 missiles per ship to be used against incoming missiles and aircraft). Every time we watch a cool wargame video, I simply can't help myself from thinking about how nice it would be for ED to improve their overall mission-editor capability, which would encompass the AI's overall capability to use teamwork and mission objectives. They have such an exciting base sim/game to use, and with the focus going on the execution of assignments, they could legitimately claim the best wartime simulator available to the public worldwide for both air force and naval simulation. Then I can't help but get spoiled and think of how amazing it would be to add submarines to the naval simulation: attack, guided-missile, and ballistic missile subs, the various types of sonar, anti-sub and anti-ship torpedos, modern naval mines (such as the US variety that head to the seafloor and have a captive torpedo pointing up), modeling of the ship anti-sub torpedo launchers, the addition of ship countermeasures (chaff, aerial decoys, towed decoys), anti-sub helicopters and planes along with their relevant weapon systems (the USN, in particular, has one or two SH/MH-60 helicopters per destroyer/cruiser), and RUM-139 ASROC rocket-boosted torpedos being launches from the Mk 41 VLS cells. The Soviet/Russian anti-sub rocket systems are pretty cool too. As GR knows via their Wolfpack/submarine videos, modern naval warfare without submarines is just half-baked in the end. Please ED! If you can justify the work it took to add naval assets to your sim, then surely modeling an accurate naval environment is also worth the effort.
@djzoodude
@djzoodude Жыл бұрын
I think the addition of attack subs would change the whole complexion of these battles. If they are anything like real life, the massive advantage US Improved LA class, Seawolf class, and Virginia class attack subs have over any possible adversaries would make the US Navy nearly unbeatable. In a real war, US attack subs would sink the majority of the enemy Navy long before they could threaten US carriers.

So to clear up some potential misconception about the f-35's maneuverability, and this is consistently what I've noticed pilots saying about the plane, it should be able to have a better two circle rate fight than a combat loaded f-16, similar acceleration and energy recovery to a clean f-16, and similar aoa and low speed performance as an f-18 with again a much better recovery on account of the higher thrust. It would probably still have some trouble in a rate fight against an f-14 that's going slow enough, and it is a mod which isn't super accurate.

Yeah I guess the Meteor has the same issue in game, in real life it will go Mach 2/3 and have bouts of gliding to reach 100km before doing a final acceleration to Mach 4+ while if the target is a lot closer (say 40km away, it will just go flat out Mach 4+ all the way).

probably the larger wing span of the F14 added to the decreased launch speed. With the Super you can have all 4 lined up on the cat ready to launch. With the Tomcat you can have them lined up, but not wings extended and ready to launch.

@@christopherfox7650 What??? Yes they did, the US were the first to put SAM systems on ships in the mid-50s with their Terrier system, onto some converted cruisers in arm launchers. The US knew the potential of SAM systems and heavily relied on them on their Naval assets, essentially having the best naval air cover on Earth within the average carrier group. As for ground-based SAMs, they didn’t tend to have those as they had a large enough edge in their air force to essentially constantly be on the offensive, reducing the need for SAM sites as is. But yes, the US has had SAM-covered waters as far back as 10 years after world war II.

Its worth noting that the Blue fleet had to rescue their fighters by firing anti air missiles around 15 minutes into the video. This left them out of SM2 anti air missiles later on when anti shipping missiles are coming in. Earlier in the video you ask about the F14's slow rate of launch compared to the F18s. You don't mention this later on so I don't know if the blue fleet launch rate manages to improve. I suspect that the F14 wider wingspan means theres trouble manuevering to the catapults in DCS. In real life 2 F14s barely fitted on a Nimitz elevator. Do they in DCS. Sorry I don't know why there was a slower rate of launch. Just throwing out ideas.

3:07. Not a big deal. The USMC still operates many f-18c’s from nimitz carriers and we’re deep enough into the 2020’s. If anything, it’s more realistic because the usmc planes always maintain a presence on navy super carriers and at this moment they have more hornets than lightnings. I will say however, adding the gun pod to the lightnings if possible would be pretty realistic

Hey Supercap, do you have any "special pull" with ED developers? Or another question, how difficult would it be to add a "basic-ish" mod to the USN Mk 41 VLS? I think it would be pretty epic if the SM-2 missile could essentially be copied and pasted into the game files via mod, and rename the pasted data to "SM-6." Here's the estimated range per Wiki, which references a couple of reputable defense industry analyst sites that have been operating for a decade or more, and they have a history of using primary government sources and interviews. "Estimates of the SM-6's range vary; its official published range is 130 nmi (150 mi; 240 km), but it could be anywhere from 200 nmi (230 mi; 370 km) to as much as 250 nmi (290 mi; 460 km)." Although the SM-6 will have a different external appearance/game model and it is surely a more optimized missile in every possible way due to it being a more modern upgraded missile developed from the SM-2 series, I think getting into a basic SM-6 model would be a welcome addition and if anything, using it merely as an extended range SM-2 missile is the safest approach possible to ensure it isn't over-modeled compared to real-world capabilities.

Watching these Aim 120 D's tracking targets out side the radar cone of the missile - makes me think that the stats are still broken. Even with a modern data link I feel it would be hard pressed to get it to work like this in a full combat/ECM environment. And although the Phoenix's are designed to hit bombers the AI's seem to dodge them to easily. If you do it again with humans I think you will see a different performance.

The Super Hornet vs Legacy Hornet dogfight was interesting. In real life, the legacy Hornet is a tad more maneuverable than the Super Hornet. Rolls a bit better and has better acceleration in subsonic flight regimes. But the Super Hornet has substantially more powerful engines, so it retains energy better and can sustain a turn longer. So a Super Hornet would probably win that fight against a 90s Era legacy Hornet. Though some legacy Hornets did get engine upgrades, so one of those might actually win a dogfight against a Super Hornet. Not sure when they got the upgrades though.
