The Volvo 740 became famous for safety. It also became known for its overtly boxy style and third-generation turbo. The idea was to reduce the amount of turbo lag. It did, but not enough to add any real excitement. This explains the lazy nine second run to get to 100 km/h. The other issue was the four-speed manual transmission - you had to be a master chef to stir your way through the cogs. However, the real knock was the amount of body roll. It keeled over like a sailboat in a gale. Let’s just say it was a boulevardier and not a sports car - that came when Volvo gave us the 850. Now that was a car!
