Wow! Dont forget about the coils. Have had to replace a couple of them. Other than that, this has been an absolutely amazing vehicle. Got my first "real job" making 12 bucks an hour in 2003 and thought it was a great idea to buy a brand new truck. It was such a horrible idea for me financially at the time, but since I still have it and because it has take care of me through all these years....best decision I ever made. Because of this, Ford customer for life!

Not all of them have coil on plug. My 97 4.6 has coil packs and plug wires.. Even still we haven't had any issues with the 3 5.4s with coils except for when a plug was spit and it took out the coil in the process.

My '97 F-150 4X4 4.6 two-valve has 213,000 miles. You give them a little love, and they'll virtually last forever. I change the fluids long before the manual says to. Such as changing the oil every 4,000; replacing coolant every 3 years. Trans fluid is changed every 60,000 since it's a city truck. There is no whine from the rear end, just a clunk from time to time when taking off from a stop due to a small amount of excess backlash which doesn't concern me. The exhaust manifolds are beginning to leak and will be taken care of in the future. Don't have issues with any of the other items mentioned, and hope I never do.

I bought a F150 new in 1997, owned it for three years, then sold it to my brother-inlaw, because my wife wouldn't drive it. After a number of years he sold it to his daughter, who owned it up until 4 years ago, when they gave it back to me. 345,000 km, with the original engine and auto tranny, and no surface rust. Of the five items you mentioned I did have the manifolds done. Thinking that I better sell it before something major breaks I sold it late last year and bought a 2022 Ford Maverick.

My 2002 4.6 Supercew has 225k on it... I started having the coil packs die at 90k, and the last one died at 190k. I've got a couple spares on the shelf in case the oldest ones start to die off again. I rebuilt the whole front suspension due to the non-servicable ball joints. Other than that, I've replaces shocks and tires over my 17 years of ownership. Oh yea. Alternator went out on the way home from Florida a couple years ago. This has been a great, reliable truck. I've got new rocker patch panels I need to install at some point, and one side of the inside of my bed is rusted pretty badly. I have bought parts from A1 Auto a few times over the years, as all of our cars are 20 years old, or more... Great prices and service.

My 2001 Ford F150 5-speed manual with 4.2l engine and 160k miles. Over the years: battery replaced, alternator went out, leaking water pump gasket, rusted out heater return tube/leaking heater core, broken muffler fender mount. Some cold starting issues not diagnosed yet (fuel pressure?), inaccurate fuel gauge. Spark plugs replaced and the usual maintenance required. All in all, it's still a daily driver. Recently added an external oil cooler for the hot summer season. Hoping to see 200k by end of 2023.

I was lucky. I needed a truck fast. Found a 1998, 6 cyl, manual tranny in 2006. Paid $1,600. It now has 300,000 miles. It runs great and other than tires, tune ups, brakes, battery my only repair was replacing the clutch hydraulics. I opted to replace the clutch while the tranny was out (225,000 miles). It still worked fine. The parts guy about fell over. He said it was the original clutch. One of the best vehicles I have ever owned. Worth more today then the day I bought it. It did finally get rusty so I bought 1999, 4x4, with a really nice body for $600, swapped the bed and doors, then re-sold it for $600. Even the seat still is in excellent condition. Thank you Ford.

Ive owned my 1998 Lariat 5.4 for about 7 years now. Its been through a lot in that time, and had very few problems. The most severe issue it ever had was when it blew a plug at 150k. Otherwise its been an absolute tank. Well worth what I paid for it and then some. Being 26 years old, i guess its technically a classic at this point. I hope someday people truly consider them classics, one of the best trucks Ford ever built hands down.

I bought a new 2000 F150 5.4 and put 105k miles on it. I sold it to a friend who ran it up to 170k miles with no plug blowout. I currently have a 2002 F150 with a 5.4 bought in 2009 that has 170k miles on it and it has not had a plug blowout. The blend door failed yesterday or actuator. I haven't determined which. The factory spec on the plugs is 12 ft lbs torque. The current recommendation is 28 ft lbs. If you torque them to 28, you won't have a blowout. I haven't had a manifold issue with either truck. I did have to change the rear diff fluid when the traction lock started chattering on slow speed turns on the 2000 at about 80k miles. These trucks are as reliable as any you could ever buy. Update---It was the blend door actuator that failed. It was a bit of a pita for a 78 yr old to replace but I got it done.

The spark plug issue is also believed to be partially caused by the torque spec on the plugs for the PI heads (99-03 for the 5.4) being too low because they specified the same spec as the non-PI heads (97-98). To my understanding, the 97-98 Tritons aren't as prone to the spark plugs blowing out as the later 2v Tritons.
@trevorsmith5524
@trevorsmith5524 2 жыл бұрын
You’re actually backwards the 97-98 trucks have a 4 thread head. That’s what causes the blow out. The 99+ models with the PI Heads have 8 threads. Like the model shown in this video. Solved the blowout problem.

@@Brightleaf_Auto OP is correct, the other guy is backwards. the thread issues started in 99, then in 2004 ford had the bright idea to use 2 piece spark plugs in the 3 valve heads which would come apart when trying to take them out to be replaced.

I bought my ‘98 4.6L 4x4 knowing the rear end needed work, but found out the hard way that the head gasket was blown. All my prior experiences with such was white smoke from the exhaust with an engine that wouldn’t idle very well, if at all. In this case, cylinders 5 through 8 were pushing exhaust gas into the coolant. When I started looking into the issue online, it looks to be fairly common as well. So FYI.

My 99 4.7 4x4 has had none of this. But the bump stops had completely rusted away along with about 20lbs worth of inner & outer rockers. Just fabricated some new parts myself. Had a head gasket blow but just ran some Blue Devil through it 50K ago and it's been fine.

Great video! I have two Gen 10 f-150’s, one only has 97k, the other nearly 300k. The one with 97k I have not had any of the problems listed, but I have had to replace 3 power window motors, 2x on the driver’s side. On my other truck, I have had to replace the actuator, read dif filter, and the plastic manifold, but never had a spark plug issue. Both trucks are made in different places. My 300k one was made in the States, the other one made in Canada. It’s strange how there are some subtle differences with the engines even though they are the same size 5.4. The older one made in Canada has a remote oil filter, which I’ve never seen before.

I have new rubber including spare, new headlights and markers, original engine with no major flaws. It is a good old 26 year old truck. Three doors. Headliner is funky and needs replacing. Like it just almost literally went down hill over night, then in a matter of three days everything went all to pieces. But as I was begging her to just to get me home I noticed my rpms was staying at 2. Steady mashing gas, decline at 2 rpms, heard the motor and lights stayed on, the more gas I gave, NOTHING!! STAYED exactly on two even letting off completely and floored. That's when the bouncing started from the rear.. . I am wondering if my gage was just stuck or if mechanical issue would cause that. I usually enjoy working on cars but something tells me this one really really wants to go Bungie jumping. Thanks for video!

I had a problem on my 2000 F150 at around 75.000 miles with screws coming out of the shifter shaft under the dash and my truck jumped into reverse while I was outside the truck talking to a friend. I had to run jump in the truck and brake before it went into a deep ditch. Problem got worse and I had to put the emergency brakes on when I parked because it would no longer go into park and gear indicator was one slot off. Finally, after one of the two screws holding the shift rod on under the dash came completely out and the other one was really loose I found out on utube that these two shifter hold down screws are a common problem coming loose on this 2000 Ford. I came across a number of other people who had the same problem. Used plenty of locktite and screwed them down tight. No problem since. Also, the same truck had a problem with turn signals not working. Found out it was the wires in the multiswitch on the steering wheel coming out of their slots. Pushed them all in and put a little glue to keep them from falling out and no problem since.

First video of yours I've seen. 👍 I just bought a 2002 F150 - 2 wheel drive, 4.6 L engine - with 182,000 miles from my brother in law. The original owner was an older gentleman down the street. No issues that I'm aware of .....but... Brother In Law let me know it consumes a quart of oil every 1400 - 1500 miles. No leaks no smoke, just needs to add a quart. He has been putting in conventional 5-TWENTY High Mileage oil in. I just saw a Scotty Kilmer video saying the oil cap info is wrong and the correct oil is 5-30. So I'm wondered if changing to 5-THIRTY HM might reduce the consumption WITHOUT causing any problems. ans FWIW I live in South Alabama about an hour from the coast. No cold winters, but very hot summers. Thanks!

I beg to differ on that sparkplug issue,it’s mainly on the 3 valve engines,it rarely ever happens on the 2 valve,wich is why the 3 valve F150 trucks that came in the next model that went from 2004 to 2007 I believe sadly were not even nearly as reliable considering how nice they looked.

Master long time mechanic and machinist here. Absolutely NONE of those 5 things are true at all. If any spark plug ever blew out of the hole on a madular engine it is because some person stripped the threads by not turning them in straight. That will never happen unless you caused this by screwing the plug in crooked. Also, dpfc sensors usually ebnd up for gotten and NEVER pose a problem at all, but instead the throttle body EGR holes get clogged up instead.. Also, the 8.8 differential NEVER get bad and neither do the bearings as long as thyre full of oil.. Also they are not called triton engines at all, but are modular V8 engines by name.. The real problems are MAF sensors and leaks in that area and IAC motors that run around 30.00 dollars and the dreaded oil filter adapter gasket that bolts to the engine block. The woman in the video based on my knowledge and long time dealings with these engines should be IGNORED completely. That blowing spark plugs out of the holes nonsense can only happen if the last person installing the plugs was a FOOL and tried to tighten them in at an angle, and you cannot call something a fault of a design when some idiot destroyed something

These trucks easily last decades (I got my 2000 in 2004, my wife got her 1997 in 2000 and a couple more followed me home. This is a good time to hoard spare parts and donor trucks (I've lived through older classic truck life cycles) if you have the room. If you own a 4.2 and the oil looks milky park it and replace the intake manifold gasket before it hydrolocks. The "fix" doesn't do much but reset the proverbial clock until failure. Good thing 4.2s are so easy to work on. The 4.6 is of course the best engine for these beasts.

It’s not just the triton motor. It’s also the German made 4.0 L V6 that is in the explorer sport or the four-door explore. They also blow out spark plugs not as often as a trade in motors but they do I’ve seen it happen.

THE 4.2 V6 F 150 engines are great if the oil is the very best synthetic which is AMSOIL ihpo ..Regular and low grade semi synths will make too much sludge and the protection value is low ..I have never had any engine issues with it being 208 k ,not even a lifter tick. Take the oil cap off and it looks clean and the metal has no speck of sludge on it..

What about the leaking windshield causing water to get on the back of the fuse box and GEM module. Causes all kinds of crazy electrical problems. Car would start on its own over night. Turn on the air and windows go down.

Wow, I've been lucky. I have a 2003 with 230k miles on it that I've had for alm9sot two years. The only major thing is the heater core started leaking and the whole dashboard needs to come out to replace it. According to previous owner this is the third time.
@williesteele4503
@williesteele4503 Жыл бұрын
I had the same thing happen with my 2001 F150. Repair garages wanted $800 or more to tear up the dash just to get to the heater core. Then my neighbor told me to just bypass the heater core with new hoses, which we did. I haven't had a heater in over 10 years, but here in South Texas you really don't need one, but problem solved. Had a friend that replaced the heater core, on his 2003 Navigator he tore out his dash, and could never get it back together again. He regretted doing that. If you live in a Cold area then I guess you should replace it.

I've had the front brake line hose go bad on the inside, causing the front brake caliper to lock up. Garages just kept replacing the pads, rotor and caliper, and the tune of 1,000's of dollars, when all that was really wrong was a $12.00 hose. At just 90.000 miles I lost compression in one cyl. and had to replace the engine. I've had to replace all the CO sensors, and 2 coil packs, melted vacuum line up near the fire wall.

The blend door motors on these trucks are the least of your problems. Easy cheap fix. Its the blend door itself that is the big problem. The blend door cracks where the blend door motor engages. The side wall cracks out. Dorman makes a revised part that has a metal band around it for reinforcement. Problem is you have to remove the whole dash. Coil packs go out a lot, Only use Motorcraft or you will be doing them again next year. The rear window leaks, Bad design with sealer. They lay the ribbon seal along the top with a couple of dips in it so water pools there and causes leaks. still great trucks. Love mine.

I don't know how many miles I have on my 97 f-150 4.6 . It had 97,000 when I bought it . 3 years later it still says 97,000 on it. I just started having the 1st performance issue . It stalls at low rpm. There are several videos on fixing the problem. The problem is every video says something different. Everything from a 10 minute job to a 500 dollar fix , this sensor , that sensor to a stupid charcoal canister looking thing that I can't imagine even being the problem . It's not a gold fish issue. Think I like the 10 minute fix the best .

My uncle had one of these. It was a 2000, with the extended cab, don’t know the motor, most likely the 4.6. He owned it until I think 2015. I think the only reason he got rid of it was because he went off the road once, and it rolled over. He was okay, and the truck was repaired, but he claims it never drove the same after that. He had somewhere over 200k miles on it. He then bought I believe a 2012 F150 to replace it.

Not all have coil on plug, my 97 4.6 has a coil pack on the front of each head with spark plug wires. That being said we have a 01, and 2 02 5.4s on the farm as well and they hadn't had issues with the coils except when they blew a plug and it took out the coil.

Thanks for the vid, now I know what the ticking noise is, on my 2000 F150,that I have heard, for a number of years. Is it something that should absolutely be repaired, or okay to just disregard? We have owned this truck since new, and do not intend on replacing, because of cost. Have 146,000 miles on the truck now.
