This was a great video. Thanks! After several hours of trial and error, this method has still not fully worked for me. I've carefully followed your directions with the installation process, but I haven't had much luck. Before I describe my results, here is my equipment list: Garmin Striker Vivid 4cv with a GT20 transducer, and my kayak is a Vibe Yellowfin 100. In order to guarantee the transducer being mounted below the water line, I've put the duct seal immediately below my seat inside the hull. That way my full body weight is pressing down on that section. I thought, "Maybe my issue was mounting it at the front of the kayak, which might not be under the water line." Unfortunately, that didn't do the trick. My mounting technique: 1) Duct seal is 1" thick before adding transducer, flat against the hull, center of the kayak (under me) 2) Transducer is fully surrounded by duct seal 3) Kayak hull is virtually flat in the center Results: 1) The transducer doesn't function properly up until about 8+ feet of water. Then it begins to properly find the bottom. 2) The 77 kHz frequency on the "Traditional" view works, but I've noticed the 200 kHz frequency doesn't 3) Similar to above, the "Clear Vu" mode is non-functional. This seems to be an issue with frequency, as the 200 kHz didn't work in Traditional Mode either 4) I have noticed that, as I approach the limits of the sonar when I get above 8 feet of water, it begins to think the bottom of the lake is fish. Fish symbols appear like crazy on the bottom Help! What am I missing? Does the shape of the underside of the kayak matter at all? Does this method simply not work right with the GT20?
@1Cast1Fish Жыл бұрын
Sounds like you got the technique down pretty well IMO, have you tried just tossing the transducer over the side and see if the results are the same? Could be a transducer issue possibly. I have used my GT20 with no issues and this method
@ColinProft Жыл бұрын
@@1Cast1Fish Potentially. I've tried putting the GT20 in the water to see if it was working properly and still got some weird results. I'll keep you posted. I didn't have issues with it a week ago, but I've been modifying my kayak recently. I used to put the depth finder over the side of the kayak. Your videos have been EXCELLENT. Truly. I've learned a lot by watching through your Striker series. It's been invaluable in figuring out what I'm doing with the Garmin.

Thanks for all your previous answers to my questions. Once again, this tutorial is brilliant. I was challenged with using a Garmin Striker Plus 4cv in an AquaGlide Chinook 90 inflatable kayak but figured out a solution that worked very well: I installed Scotch Brand Extreme Fasteners to both the bottom of the transducer and the bottom of the starboard side "pontoon". (Really not a pontoon but a fabric-covered vinyl air bladder) I can reach over the side of the kayak and stick the transducer into place very easily. The transducer cable then threads through a couple of loops (kayak paddle loops made of velcro) to the Garmin and I can either disconnect the cable and leave it all in the kayak, or unsnap the transducer from the hull and pack it all out when finished fishing. I can also beach the kayak and by leaning a little to port, the transducer never touches bottom because of the kayak's construction. Best of all, it works! So thanks again for all your helpful tutorials, advice, and ideas for kayak fishing. You are clearly an expert in this area!

The best answer I have is, that you will need to try it. I have seen it work without issue, and I have seen a few issues. Really depends on construction of the hull, and transducer installation. The key is to ensure no air gaps and ensure the transducer is below the waterline. Some aluminum boats have 2 pieces of aluminum and that creates a small air gap that causes issues.

I just used a yoga block cut it to 1"1/2 thick and 3/4 or 1/2 width&length past the size of transducer. Tracing the transducer in center of a piece yoga eva foam block that you cut. Also make sure to cut the tranducer yoga block to fit in center. Find correct spot to glue your cut yoga block in the kayak hall glue in location you pick let yoga block dry. Then install the transducer after you filled yoga block cavity halfway with the glue you select then press transducer till it bottems out to hall making sure to avoid air gaps and bubbles let cure. Intall everything else. Buying the foam block pre made for kayaks cost 20.00 yoga block 5.00 and you have extra. Its the same eva material.

@williamoneill54982 жыл бұрын
This is a mad good idea and very interesting. I have seen others using cut out foam, even water or resin filled foam, glued to the Kayak hull. Air bubbles are a hazard with the resin method and also pretty permanent for your transducer. Duct seal seem like a very flexible option, assuming sonar penetrates it very well? Also its easy to reverse if not effective. I wonder how GPS works out if you mount inside the Kayak? I definitely want good GPS functionality. I am planning on putting a FF on my OT Predator this summer, I was going to conventionally mount by stuffing a pluming pipe down the scupper hole wrapped with duct tape, acting as a shim, with the transducer on the end snug in the recess. But now that I have seen this, I am very tempted to try it out. If I get a FF model with a strong down scan, I should hopefully get very close to a direct water mounted result. Excellent video, thank you for posting.

So most fish finders the GPS is in the head unit itself not the transducer, unless you have a external GPS puck for a higher end unit.

I tried this with a Garmin 540s in a sailboat. The fishfinder screen seems to work but the depth meter does not work at all. Not sure if this is due to the thicker hull of the boat or something different in the transducer of the 540s. The depth information is more important than the fish finder for me, so I went back to a wet well, which does work.
@1Cast1Fish3 жыл бұрын
Sounds like there is a air gap of sorts between the transducer and hull...that is why no depth...the air kills the ping and then it thinks it has no depth. Once you add water the air gap is removed and no issues.
@HomerShannon3 жыл бұрын
@@1Cast1Fish I have to revise my comment. Since I've been having issues with my depth sounder as well as the Garmin, today I replaced the transponder on the depth sounder, replacing the in-hull model with a Humminbird puck. I mounted it a bit off center of the boat where the fibergass is a thinner and used the duct sealer. Worked like a charm. I then took my Garmin and moved it from the location I had been using, which works fine with a water bath, and stuck it on a thinner area using the duct sealant. It works! I still get an occasional drop-out on the Garmin, but it only last a couple of seconds. I'll know more about how this really works after I've used the boat more signifcantly than my little test ride today.

I mounted my transducer this way and it has worked fine. I got a Garmin Striker 4cv, but I have to have the transducer in the water now. Is there a transducer arm you would recommend? I would rather have a ram ball track mount because we take our kayaks camping and everything comes off of them for the trip. I think that would make it a lot easier. I was looking at the Scotty mount because I like that I can mount the fish finder on top of it. I was also looking at the Ram mount for it's flexibility. Any help you can give would be appreciated. Thanks.

@@1Cast1Fish Thank you. My husband told me he asked Garmin and they told him the CV transducer can be mounted the same way in the hull of the kayak. I thought with it being a cv transducer it needed to be in the water. If it's mounted in the hull will it still work like it should? Thanks.
@1Cast1Fish Жыл бұрын
I mount my CV in the hull without issues, and many others have as well. Some people have some issues though, so it can depend on each kayak, but most issues seem to be with improper mounting such as a air gap or not being level.

Hey man so i did this for the gt20 transducer. The regular sonar works but the CV is definitely wonky. Id say the bottom/tip of the trans is right on the edge of the duct seal. The sides have about 3/4 of an inch. Should the tip and bottom also have thay same leeway? Do you think thays whats messing up the CV?
@1Cast1Fish Жыл бұрын
Possible, but also is the transducer completely below the waterline when inside the kayak? Also ensure the duct seal is making a good base with no air gaps...you want it thick enough to bed the transducer, but not overly thick.

How strong is the bond between the duct seal and the hall and the transducer in the duct seal? While it is protected from accumulation of ice and snow it is exposed to well-below freezing winter temperatures for several months at a time every winter and the duct seal will be exposed as well. another question about installing the transducer -through the hull is an option im considering I have a Hobie compass and the gt20 transducer that comes with the Garmin 4cv is pretty big. some show it installed in the built in Lowrance plate area but are concerned about it hanging out about a 1/2 inch behind the plate out in the water --- why would that be a problem? its mostly protected there and I want the water temperature feature so Id rather put it in the water if I can, if it hangs out is that a problem? the over the side option is possible as well but I dont want the extra pieces. thanks for any help!
@1Cast1Fish2 жыл бұрын
There are alot of mounting options, but the thing to remember is they must have no air gaps...so fully submerged in water or no gap between the duct seal/boat/water. I looked at a few pics of the compass and the Lowrance plates, since I have never seen them. I am going to say that it should still work fine since the transducer will be fully submerged, just not fully protected....however I have no experience with these, so I am not 100% sure.

@@1Cast1Fish thank you for the reply --- I found a person on Etsy that makes Garmin transducer plates for the gt20 transducer used in the Garmin cv fish finders for the Hobie kayaks that take the place of the Hobie Lowrance plate- I did not want to cut that one up because its Hobie so probably $$$ to replace, anyway it looks as if this custom one fits well holds the g20 up and in the recessed space. I ordered one (expensive $45 but still less than a new Lowrance plate from Hobie) and have not received it yet but will try to remember to come back and say how it works and installs. I just got the 5cv today and have not had time to try to instal it yet - work....... I still do not see why there would be a problem leaving the transducer exposed but not below the hull, since it is made to be placed on the back of boats and comes with a trolling motor mount so its likely intended to be exposed to water right??? another question I had is that I will have to remove the finder from the kayak for storage upside down on a wooden from - any problem with frequently unplugging unit from power and transducer cables??? thanks for great videos
@1Cast1Fish2 жыл бұрын
Be sure to power off the fish finder before unplugging also see my other reply for more on unplugging. I also think the plate is actually used to protect the transducer from rocks and bumps...kayaks tend to be operated in shallower and rougher water than boats, so bottom contact is not unusual in a kayak. Those transducers are expensive to replace
