Today we test out a round that shoots 2 bullets at one time. This is the legendary duplex bullet found in the book "Forty Years of the 45-70". There was always a lot of speculation of how these functioned but finally we are able to see what happens using a Chronos high speed camera.

Only 45-70 I've handled was about 60 years ago. A fellow working for my dad on our farm brought one. Single shot. Open the top, load in the round and clamp it closed. Octagonal barrel. Very heavy. Shot an empty five gallon steel can at maybe 10 yards. Dime hole going in, fist sized exit hole. I wish it had been filled with water. What a beast.

The reason the rear bullet is more accurate, the front is "free floating" while the back one has pressure behind it, once they leave the barrel the rear is still pushing, the front is being carried with it. Take any 2 objects next to each other push one from the center against and with the other one, at some point that front one will grab something, get more friction and it will want to go a different direction.

Hey Claude, i truly appreciate the time to write this explanation for others to understand. The only problem, your explanation make no gah-damn sense to me in layman’s terms. How is it that the front is being “carried” by the back round after leaving the barrel? Are you trying to explain the back bullet using the slip stream of the front bullet to accelerate faster due to the lack in air pressure? Also why is it that when the front bullet “grabs something” which i assume u mean hit somwthing, it will want to got a different direction? Genuinely curious, thank you for your knowledge!
@LifelongExperience
@LifelongExperience Жыл бұрын
@@TheCrazeTaker he didn't say the BULLET grabbed something, he said if you experimented - say on a bench, take two ends of broomhandle, and push one with the other, the front one will eventually get pushed aside. I agree with the possibility of such a principle, but not sure how the energy imparted to the front bullet would resist that effect, and how much drag on the nose of the first bullet is shielded from the second until they part company.
@francisbissii1120
@francisbissii1120 Жыл бұрын
The forward bullet being pushed by the nose of the rear bullet is not concentric anymore. The nose of the rear bullet is most likely a bit off also, but if the base is flat it will fly true at least at short range.
@aaronawoodard
@aaronawoodard Жыл бұрын
@@francisbissii1120 Well the slow-mo also shows disturbance in the spiraling when moving the first bullet out of the way, so the wobble alone adds more drag, its all still minimal enough that it makes up its own length at the short distance to enter at the same time... the farther the distance the more the wobble, the greater the effect, hence farther spread AND delayed entry times... We all good now?

Hello to Jeff and OG, Another fine video. Nick is great and deserves much success. My guess is the alloy Nick used was BHN 15-16. I've tried duplicating the old prison riot control 3 round ball loads in 45-70 and found the spread to be such that 25 - 30 yards was the maximum range for practical effectiveness. Apparently, the inertia of the front bullet(s) gets squash deformation - The base driving bands of our cast bullets take a beating, especially if cast soft and if driven hot. These would be devastating hunting loads for short range feeder blinds - multiple hits simultaneous and close together. Happy Holidays to you and yours, Steve

Jeff that was awesome to see those in slow motion. I remember years ago seeing a test where they deformed some bullets to see how it affected stability. It works well over a broad range of animal sizes and doesn't exhibit excess carcass damage on deer size game. Just .45 caliber holes. It is a meat hunters cartridge for sure. I was wondering about the spread on more normal duplex rounds. Apparently with the old experimental military duplex rounds from project salvo, the top round had an angled base so the bottom round would push it off to the side and cause more dispersion, but that always seemed kinda weird to me, but I guess it was kind of necessary for the kind of dispersion they wanted. Neat

In the end bullets dispersed too much, so duplex with angled base was a dumb idea.
@Ezekiel_Allium
@Ezekiel_Allium Жыл бұрын
@@quint3ssent1a the entire point was the dispersion, the point of project salvo and similar projects isn't an increase in strict marksmanship, but an increase in overall hit probability in the heat of combat with things like suppression fire and only getting brief windows to actually shoot at something. This is also the idea behind the g11, an-94, the related project SPIW etc. Its not about treating an assault rifle like a dmr, because a lot of situations don't really allow for that. Debates on whether that was a good idea or not are philosophical but I don't think you can dismiss the idea outright as just dumb, they were causing the greater dispersion on purpose

Multiple projectiles is an old school concept. Buck and ball was favored by General Washington in the revolutionary war. Also the British soldiers of the time mentioned how well the colony fighters made use of the "goose guns". I noticed in many kentucky rifle replicas that have massive pit damage in the bore only shoot accurate if two round balls are stacked. Then the accuracy increases substantually. Even more accurate than a single maxi ball fired from the same barrel.

The Paul Matthew's book should be required reading for anyone who has a .45-70. I used to make a triple ball load with .451" round balls and some Teflon tape between them, crimping on the last one. It would feed through the 1895 Marlins perfectly well. There was an article in an old Gun Digest, "The .444 for survival" if my memory serves, by Robert Sherwood, and it had a number of interesting loads including a 4-ball load, and a shot load that used a round ball to cap it. I replicated it in the .45-70 with #6 shot, a .410 shot cup trimed back and a .451" ball again. It wasn't really useful for anything on the wing, but if you wanted to shoot a rabbit, you just aimed where you wanted the ball to go. If you were looking at something thinner skinned or smaller, you just aimed off to the side and the shotload would take care of it. The range for the shot load was minimal because the rifling over rotated the shotcup.

Maybe: back bullet expands hitting the first and engages the rifling better, + as the first bullet exits the barrel the second will push (first is slowing because it is already out of gas push) and the second may "kick" the first tail away of the center of the barrel, inducing the divergence. Maybe. Gratz Boys

The US military experimented with .308 duplex rounds in the 50s and 60s. Although they did function as intended (two rounds per shot with at least some spread) they didn't achieve the goal of increasing the probability of a soldier to hit a target. Their loads had higher recoil than standard ammunition, enough to decrease the accuracy of most shooters to the point it canceled out the theoretical benefit of the two projectiles. Instead they found that switching to a smaller caliber (.223) and giving the soldier twice as much ammo for the same weight DID make a difference in hit probability.

Great video guys and what a cool round. I really like all the different ammo you test out. My theory on the trajectory difference between the 2 rounds is that the 1st round is being pushed off line by the 2nd round. And the 2nd round gets to clear the barrel last and without any manipulation. Again, really really cool video

Another one might be that the second round has slightly more energy, only getting wind resistance as the first round drops out of the way?

Similar to how some longer rounds can tumble in the air as the front end slows and loses energy compared to the back.

I know y'all usually do shotgun rounds but it is so refreshing to see some lever action rifles. My favorite action. Also those rounds are like something some executive would tout in a presentation meeting. "We added a second projectile to the round to give the consumer added value. That's 50% more bullet per round!"

As another commenter kind of pointed out, the reason I think the bullet behind flies faster and more accurately is that it's flying in a negative pressure cone, whereas the bullet in front is pushing all that air out of the way. So theoretically in a world with no gravity, the rear bullet will hug close to the front bullet the whole way. But since we have gravity it eventually falls out of the way of the faster moving bullet because it interacted with all that air friction and slowed down. Hope this makes sense, this was my hypothesis before I even started watching the video, I based it off the video of the guy who beats the record for fastest bicycle. He is riding his bike behind a barrier attached to a race car. That barrier is pushing the air away from him so he can ride in negative pressure with less friction.

Get one for the right reason, that you'll love it forever. I say that because you'll need to reeeally love it; garden variety Federal ammo is currently 79.99 for 20 rounds. For reference, Hornady .50BMG is 89.99. I've been reloading .45-70 since the 90s and everything is ridiculous right now. It's not much cheaper than factory. Years ago I came across some duplex ammo. It had two lead balls in a 357 casing. It was developed for the NYC police department as a round that wouldn’t go thru a wall and into the apartment next door. It failed to do so. My local gun shop had a bunch of the they were selling dirt cheap, so I bought a box. I shot a few of them and the second ball hit the target above the first ball. I only shot a few of them, and kept them set aside until I took my brother to the range. I loaded my 357 with them and gave it to him. He took one shot, and asked why there were two holes in the target. I said, it must have bounced back at you. He dropped the gun and ran out of the shooting range. It was worth the money ,

Bought that very rifle for our times in bear country. I initially thought, "that round might be perfect for the black bears or grizz who won't be disuaded", but now I gotta wonder. Not really a fan of trying to get the bear within 25 yds to get both hits, but was great to see how it handled that seriously threatening ballistics gel block. Great job. Might still try to get some for the entertainment value.

You can magnify spread by making the front projectile more dense than the back projectile. Such as lead vs copper or steel. Having 2 bullets enter the same hole makes it completely pointless. Too much also makes it unusable.

The double loads remind of the buck & ball rounds used by confederate army with the .69 cal Springfield smoothbore musket. Not documented but would imagine buck & ball would be used for sentry or picketing during low lite. Consisting of a paper cartridge with an large round ball and three .30 caliber balls resting on top. Stonewall Jackson was struck at least once by a .69 cal buck & ball.

I was curious how they'd spread too! Hickok45 did a video recently about muzzleloaders/Flintlocks using multiple projectiles and had mentioned the one in the back tends to be more accurate. My assumption is that it's due to a more even spread on the base of the bullet from the propellant gases as they leave the crown of the barrel
@theflyingfish66
@theflyingfish66 Жыл бұрын
I think it might be similar to, when shooting buckshot or birdshot, the way the wad "pushes through" the cloud of shot after leaving the barrel, pushing the shot aside and increasing the spread (often leading to the so-called "doughnut of death" spread pattern). In this case, the rear bullet pushes the front bullet down the barrel, then once the front bullet leaves the barrel it "rolls off" the nose of the rear bullet that is still getting pushed along by the propellant, leading to an inaccurate first bullet. I believe this is why, in the US Army duplex and triplex .30-06 trials, the rear of each bullet was extremely concave, so that the bullet behind it would nest inside it like a stack of cups. The 2/3 bullets would stay clumped together until the last one left the barrel, at which point aerodynamic forces would pull them apart.
