This genuinely helped me! I just installed a replacement filter on my 2002 ES300 for the first time since I bought the car used and couldn’t tell which way the “air flow” with arrow of after-market filter is supposed to be oriented. The side damper piece on mine is broken too, so now I see this is common and looks like not really fixable.
