2004 - 2008 5.4L 3v tip! oil pump pick up tube bolts

A tip on how to get the hard to install oil pick up tube onto the oil pump.

Ran into the same problem, I was dropping my oil pan anyway so I gave up on this bolt after quite a while of trying. Great idea for those who aren’t dropping their pan.

Thanks doing the timing chain now and next is pump and looked it, well looked on KZbin ! I had rags and magnet but no room with my fat figures . This will work. How long to get it back in and started :) how many tool thrown

Wrap electric tape around the head of the bolt a bunch of times so when you pull it it spins it to tighten it also holds bolt. Be sure bolt is started before last few wraps come off works everytime

Great video !!!! omg, ....... I used a combination of this video and the comment sec. worked like charm! I used teflon tape between the washer and the head. guided the bolt in with needle noose pliers in my left hand / held the bolt with my index finger of my right hand. pulled the tape, it went in. MUST have a magnet. took 2 attempts , 10min. THANK YOU !!!!!!!!!!

I know this is an older video but I just want to say thanks. I struggled for over an hour before I seen this. Your trick and a flex head ratchet wrench I was done in 5 minutes.

I've spent more time than i want to admit try to get this one bolt in! Thank you so much for the tip! I am currently changing both heads and all timing parts are getting replaced, basically rebuilding half of my motor. Timing tensioner chain guide broke on passenger side of the motor, then causing 6 rockers to break inside the valve cover. Surprisingly the motor would still start and run but just in limp mode. It shouldn't even have been starting at all! Luckily nothing past the heads was damaged pistons and everything are still in good shape or id be replacing the entire motor which would have cost three times as much to do. 230,000 miles before it did this even with the previous owner never even changing a spark plug!

If it dropped into the oil pan get a magnet on a bendable long handle

I’ve done this job 3 times. Must drop oil pan but if you’re confident no plastic guide pieces in pan, then you can still unbolt pan on 4x4 models and it will drop enough to give you more clearance, just let pan hang down without unbolting front diff, you’re welcome.

Boy hit the nail on the head with what a job this turned out to be. Thank you for posting video who watched a few days ago and I'm currently working on that bolt right this moment. I have no garage and it's I'm in the mountains and snowed last night again for the 7th time this year so I've been dealing with snow rain and the freezing cold everyday and night

Wish I would have thought of that, or seen this yesterday, you know, BEFORE I dropped the screw into the pan. Then I used a rare earth magnet taped on a screw driver to try and fish it out. Yeah, now I have a bolt and a magnet in my pan, and the front is up on ramps, so I can't even lower the axle and remove the sway bar. Looks like I'm doing the rest of the timing job, putting it all together, backing off the ramps, then jacking it up and doing the oil pan gasket. Oh well. I mean, with the plastic from the guides that was broken off ( not a lot, but some none the less) I should really drop the man anyway.

Do you know if adding too much oil will cause the oil pressure to drop. I put a bit too much in 5.4 3v I lost oil pressure after a long a drive

Only thing I can think of of.. is the higher level will hit the crankshaft as its rotating. This will aerate the oil(introducing small air bubbles into the oil) That would cause reduced oil pressure

Like you I hate to own up to how much time I wasted trying to get that bolt started. Came out to the shop this morning and used your wire trick and got it first try. Thank you so much for the perfect solution.

Why not just use an 8mm flex head ratcheting wrench?

I wrapped it with Teflon thread tape right next to the head of the bolt. Then heald the bolt in with a finger. Once I got it in the hole I pulled the Teflon tape making the bolt spin to start it.. Took me about 3 hours to do that as well.

I recently did another timing chain and pump and spent about 10min using my method. But I will keep you method in mind on the next one.
