Prefilling the oil filter is not necessary, but it doesn't hurt anything either. I don't care what some of these commenters say. As for an anti drain back valve, in case you're worried about it. There is not been an LS motor yet made that requires one. The oil filter sets in there in a vertical position and will not drain out unless you poke a hole in the side of it. I do like the largest oil filter that fits the application. Which it appears that you put on. You might want to be more assertive in your explanation of the part number of that oil filter you're using. Putting the smallest possible oil filter on the engine is suggested by the manufacturer because they want to sell you a new truck. They could give a shit less how long it lasts. As long as it gets through the warranty period.

Ahhh ok, thanks for the explanation. I was told the larger one is better as well. I like to pre-fill about halfway but have been told it doesn't really matter for these engines. Thank you again Hawk! 😁👍

Awesome quick informational video! I’ve owned my 14 Silverado for 3 years now, and changed the oil every time myself lol but I enjoy these videos. I can never remember the drain plug size without looking it up 😂 sure beats getting under the truck with the wrong size lol

Thanks Billy! I'm 1 year in on my 15 Silverado and I love it! I used to work at a Chevy Dealership many years ago and it was a 15 mm then too. It's kinda cool that they kept it the same size all these years lol. You're always welcome to come back and watch this video again if you forget the size lol 😉

Very well-done video. Draining the oil and changing the filter is easy on these engines. I also use ACDelco oil filters on my 2017 Yukon and Pontiac Vibe. Not the E series but the good ones. I use Castrol Edge 0w20. The most important thing is not so much what brand of oil but changing the oil and filter on a regular basis. Good oil is the live blood of the engine. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you Russel for the kind words. I agree 100%, performing the maintenance on time is more important than what brands you use to do it. And Castrol is a good brand to go with too. Thanks for watching! 👍

My old 08 Silverado’s oil drain plug has the gasket already on the plug. Are these trucks the same way where you don’t have to necessarily change it everytime? Great video btw!
@TrickShiftGarage

Hi Mike! Correct! You don't have to change the gasket every time you change the oil, just replace as necessary. Thanks for watching! 👍

I have a 2016 Chevy Silverado that I bought with 14,000 miles currently has 18k miles was using Castrol oil 0W20. Do you think it would be a waste of money to start using royal purple for the life of the vehicle? I do not want to end up with that GM tick
@TrickShiftGarage

Absolutely not! Royal Purple is awesome oil. Thanks for watching! 😎

Use 5w-30 Mobil 1 or Royal Purple, once ur mileage gets high. All Sierras have the same 5.3 eco Tec n they take 5w-30. I have the tick on my 14 Silverado, I switch from 0-20 to 5w-30 no tik, 156K miles.

For some reason finding 5w 20 dexos oil is always a hit or miss at Walmart so I actually had to go with 10w 20. For my last oil change. It should be fine in my 2018 Silverado but deff will never go with the 0 w 20
@TrickShiftGarage
@TrickShiftGarage Жыл бұрын
That's fair Jonny. I decided to go with the recommended oil this time, I might try a heavier weight oil sometime in the future. Thanks for watching! 👍

With tighter tolerances you could burn out a bearing because the oil is to thick to get to where it needs to be. But that's up to you.

Does the oil have to be Dexos approved if stated on the truck ??
@99shadows66
@99shadows66 7 ай бұрын
Yes, make sure it is Dexos 1 Gen 2 or better because these DOD engines are known for lifter issues and using the wrong oil can cause the lifters to malfunction prematurely.
@44hawk28
@44hawk28 10 ай бұрын
Never never never never never never ever ever do you tighten the oil drain as tight as you can by hand. That can and will destroy the oil drain plug or the oil pan. All that oil drain plug has to do is keep the oil in the pan, it does not have to hold the truck in the air. Please don't ever say that again!
@TrickShiftGarage
@TrickShiftGarage 10 ай бұрын
You're right, it my mind I know not to kill it with all my strength, good and snug is all that is needed. Tightening down to proper torque spec of 18 ft-lbs is best though. Thanks for watching and commenting Hawk! 👍
