IF those 10 bolts for the crankcase cover are all exactly the same size, ya don't need to organize them in a particular order. Yes it's good practice habit in case you're removing something and the bolts AREN'T all the same size, but whatever. 6:38. It is IMPORTANT to note that the screen is meant to go in only ONE way. The thicker end always faces out...meaning it is always going to be closest to the crankcase filter cover going towards the outside of the vehicle.
@yvonnecarpenter29575 ай бұрын
AND, if all else fails, there is a little white dot on the filter on one location only - the white dot must face up and towards the outside (so towards you).
@crockagator9197 жыл бұрын
I can't remember if I already commented on here before, but I suggest a magnetic drain plug also. It'll catch metal particles before they reach the screen. I'm coming up on 1000 miles and am planning on doing the above job as well as checking/setting the valves.
@groundpounder41345 жыл бұрын
Just for an added note : you can buy an aftermarket clutch cover that rids the spinner and screen and adds a oil filter you can replace
@yakadee111 жыл бұрын
Nice instructional video. All I need now is a Grom. Maybe I missed them but I didn't hear the torque specs for the crankcase cover & drain plug.
@MotorcycleProjects11 жыл бұрын
I never measure torque of those when installing on my personal bikes as the values are very low, but per the service manual: Drain plug is 24Nm or 18lb ft. Crankcase cover bolts are M6 and, though the manual does not specify the exact torque for these bolts, it does reference other M6 bolts with a standard torque value of 12Nm or 9lb ft. Note: Though it says 18lb ft on the drain plug I'll point out that similar sized drain plugs on other aluminum engines are recommended as low as 9lb ft and as high as 20lb ft. Most typically I've seen values closer to 12 to 14lb ft. On my personal bike I would not torque to 18lb ft. I would choose 12 or 14lb ft as an approximation of the torque I apply. It's your choice if you want to go with the Honda recommendation or a different torque value that you choose.
@peterhoward49210 жыл бұрын
i would also add that the condition of the oil @ under 500 km was almost alarming.Only a bit of gasket goop but just a ton of filings.Wish i had changed it sooner!

So instead of buying a oil filter you have to buy 2 gaskets...
@PanditaP4 жыл бұрын
You don't NEED to buy the gaskets, also you don't need to clean the screen and the spinner every oil change. The gaskets are $10 for both from the dealer...
@jimmcconville6244 жыл бұрын
@@PanditaP still more work and costly than buying a filter. a stupid design if you ask me
@yvonnecarpenter29575 ай бұрын
It actually is cheaper than the new design. That main gasket needs to be replaced no matter what model year you have if you open that side cover. The Spinner gasket ONLY needs to be replaced every 4000 miles, which is when they recommend you clean the spinner. The simpler oil changes of drain/replace oil do not require the cover to be opened nor does it require the oil filter to be cleaned (you only clean the filter every 4000 miles). So the cost of an oil change on models 2021 ans older is just the oil (and the labor, if you are paying someone to do it). The cost for the oil change on 2022 and newer is oil+filter, and labor (again if you are paying to be done for you). It is not a huge expense difference, imho, but on newer models you have to hunt down that little filter every time - unless you reuse it, which is NOT recommended, but to each its own! I think all model years are super easy to maintain and with Honda's reputation of having parts available for decades it is unlikely you won't find gaskets or filters in the future!
@MotorcycleProjects11 жыл бұрын
Don't tell anyone else, but on my personal bikes I don't *always* replace them either. I look at how much deforming occurred from the last usage and make a judgement call. Truthfully though I rarely use one more than twice since they are so cheap. You can pick up a bulk pack of 10 or 25 for just a couple dollars.
@YoodlePudding11 жыл бұрын
Thank you for all that information. Super helpful. I appreciate it big time dood

The crankcase cover's gasket is considered to be the RIGHT SIDE, official part# is 11394-KYZ-900. If you fine a honda grom engine gasket and it only costs 1 to 3 bucks. That is NOT it. That is the left side which you probably will never need to replace in more than 50k miles easily. Right side costs between 7 and up to 20 bucks. You're welcome :D

Make sure to get the internal pre screen and the spinner. Also remember that the oil level is checked by putting the dipstick in without screwing it in. You just need to set it in the hole to check the level.
@HORNET69 жыл бұрын
Informative but what about the oil left in the left side of the motor because you did the whole thing on the side stand! Draining and checking the oil should be carried out with the bike upright. When replacing the gasket run a light smear of grease on both sides. This will help removal when changing.

i hate the little Honda cam chain tensioner. the ones stick out of the cylinder are way better, easier, and probably cheaper to produce.. i was working on a motor upside down the other day not paying attention i removed that plug instead of the drain plug, it scared the shit out of me with it's spring. i normally put the bike in gear or a strap wrench on the flywheel when working inside the motor. but an impact is always better. i reuse crush washer till they leak or crack but i'm cheap....

How do you hold the oil spinner while torquing the bolts for the cover? It just spins around when I try to torque the 3 bolts.
@MotorcycleProjects11 жыл бұрын
You would need to use a holding tool or another wrench. You can also place the bike in gear and have someone set on it to keep the rear tire from spinning so that the motor will not turn. When doing this service on my personal bike I opt for this method as I always have a friend around who can sit on it for a few seconds to keep it from rotating.

Thanks again brotha your vids are crazy helpful. Already did my airbox mod thanks to you sir!
@MotorcycleProjects11 жыл бұрын
The first oil change isn't required by Honda at 50 miles, but a lot of Grom owners have felt it was beneficial to change the oil early to remove the large sized early break-in particles from the engine. Since we don't have a typical oil filter in our engines and we have a small oil capacity, we were just being extra cautious trying to avoid the potential for any damage. I would say 50 miles is excessively cautious, but I wouldn't think twice about changing it after a couple of hundred miles. The crush washer is a 12.5x20mm. Part numbers can be found in this thread: www.gromforum.com/forum/honda-grom-how/22250-oil-change-filter-spinner-cleaning-video.html
@MotorcycleProjects11 жыл бұрын
I should point out just so you know that Honda recommends the first service at 600miles and they suggest changing the oil only. They suggest the first cleaning of the internal filters at 7,500mi. As the parts are cheap enough and the oil volume is so low, I have a hard time imagining the oil staying very clean and therefore, I imagine a high amount of crud in the filter. I intend to change my oil and filters at every oil change for the first couple as a precautionary measure. If I find that the filters are always super clean, then I will follow Honda recommendations.
I have 1,000 miles on my grom and have never done an oil change :(
