5:34 - are you sure about those numbers? In Europe Honda claims that CR-V has 165 mm (6,5 in, as much as Chevy Cruze) of ground clearance, Toyota says RAV4 has 187 mm (7,6) with big 2.2l diesel. Does Toyota sell different RAV here?

Great review! As a longtime honda fan/buyer, we were comparing the 2013/14 RAV4 to the 2014 cr-v and what I knew that the 2015 cr-v would be. The RAV4 won by a slight margin and we love it. You got most of our reasons captured. At the time the cr-v had no bells and whistles either. But the prospect of waiting for the cr-v to refresh a bit in 2015 meant a cvt which I didn't necessarily want. Love that you can press a button in the rav to distribute 50/50 power. Thanks for doing this one...you're the only ones to do this type of review that I've seen. Or acknowledge the diff. Lock button. Just be sure it's in 'sport' mode at the same time!

@@Suicidebummer88 I have only found conflicting info on this. When Sport mode is selected, torque transfer to the rear wheels starts from the moment the steering wheel is turned, to reduce the load on the front tires. If understeer develops, torque transfer to the rear wheels is automatically increased by up to 50 percent, further reducing front tire loading to provide enhanced lateral grip. So it could increase handling in slippery/stuck situations but other sources say it can over/understeer so it appears to be situational.

CRV great on roads just don't try anything too crazy offroad or in deep snow. I thought with the new CRV Honda would actually come out with a better AWD system, guess not. And Toyota get rid of the ancient 2.5/4 and go with a diesel or something. These are not race cars. AWD/4wd torque counts! Also diesels have much better fuel economy than old fuel injection engines...

True, but the newer modern diesels from BMW and Mercedes are just as clean as their gas burning cousins. Toyota now uses BMW diesels in some of their newer 2016 models. Was supposed to cross over to the 2016 RAV4, but so far they still use the 2.2 Toyota diesel. Would be nice to see at least a bit more HP for the RAV!

Yeah, VW/Audi which make millions on overpriced cars tried to cut corners to compete with BMW and Mercedes and even Fiat in the diesel arena. Hell even their TSi/TFSI engines have many issue's. Just sad. Toyota has made a deal with BMW for their diesels which are up to spec and better than the Audi/VW ones.

I seriously don't understand why do cars in America always get big and old engines and transmissions rather than the new ones. Do you guys really prefer this engine over 1.6 diesel that CR-V gets in Europe that produces 160HP@4k rpm(25 less than this) and 350 nm@2k rpm(258lb ft) of torque(like 105 nm or 77 lb ft more at half rpm) with an awsome 9 A/T instead of the lousy CVT. And you wanna know the consumption... 47MPG city 58MPG highway 53MPG combined(rather than 25,31,27 respectively for this 2.4).

These are NOT true M&S tires on the both vehicles. These are apparently all-season tires designated for use at wide temperature ranges on a hard pavement rather than snow or slush, and it's quite strange to see that much attention to the "grip" in this video. One's got to be a moron going up a mountain in a descent snowfall with tires like these. The review also lacks some details about the crucial off-road features like the VST, presence of diff locks.

The CR-V has more groud clearance than the RAV? In Europe RAV is credited with 18cm and the CR-V with only 16.8... And the trunk is bigger on the CRV with 589 liters compared to 549 liters on the RAV, both without sparewheels. Aniway I like the Honda better.

Having problems with RAV4 gripping in snow? Because you need winter Hercules, Avalanche tires with teeth. Road noise is a bit noticeable with these tires on dry pavement because of the deep lugs and they are deliberately soft, but the car just loves them and knows how to use 'em. 2 beefs. 1/The plastic trim around wells? No good. They need an impact class plastic not whats on them. They easily will give you a hairline crack . 2/ Engineering could have rearranged the oil pan turn of the exhaust pipe and moved it up a bit. It's the only thing that drops the overall clearance an inch, and that's the worst place to have it.

Is the new CR-V any better inside? I know the '15 RAV4 is just a ton of cheap, crappy feeling plastic inside. I've driven CR-Vs a few years old and they are just as horrible.

igeekone I beg to differ. Ford and Mazda, for example, have interiors that don't sound like cheap tupperware when you knock on them. I have a $19k Mazda 3 and the dashboard and door panels are soft to the touch. At the $30k price point, excessively cheap plastics everywhere is unacceptable.

Ed Berger glad you said it. Keeps me from saying it. :-) I read online somewhere that the American auto companies use the general buyer as the test goats, making prettier interior to boost sales, and changing everything every two or three years, when it doesn't hold up. Its something everyone should think about... (That's why Toyota sticks with the same stuff for years) They do that, work out the kinks, all while building new stuff behind the scenes. Luxury doesn't determine reliability and test reviews shouldn't be determined based on that.

I think we need to know what gets 10 points, what is the top end of your scale? I would suggest a stock Jeep Wrangler Rubicon would get 10 points on everything. Then you would rate everything else on that scale, so that something getting 5 points is half as good off road as the Jeep which was best.

rear seat space is understandably smaller in Volvo. As a father to 2 boys, I will take more cargo and little less room in a back seat any day...or I'll take my 11' outback which has plenty of both :) My bet is 90% of customers will by this as a 2+2 family wagon so space provided is more than sufficient.

When considering off-road capability, wheel travel is important. The more flex there is the better the traction off road. You should always consider this with crossovers. They usually don't have enough flex and travel for off road and can easily unload a wheel and even two diagonally then it's up to the traction control to keep you going forward if it can distribute torque or use the old trick in braking with power to fool the differentials. Maybe the CRV has easier flex that keeps the tires on the ground longer and fools you into thinking the tires were better (though they may very well be better.)

Do you mean "articulation?"
@denisleblanc4506
@denisleblanc4506 10 жыл бұрын
dchawk81 Yes. Crossovers usually have limited articulation and so aren't anywhere near as good as dedicated off-roaders. Of those crossovers, the ones with the better AWD systems and traction aids, like artificial brake based torque distribution will be much better.
@dchawk81

Yes. I know. I was clarifying the terminology.
@denisleblanc4506
@denisleblanc4506 10 жыл бұрын
dchawk81 You could use a simple ramp to determine a ramp travel index (RTI) and then you can compare vehicles to each other and see which one travels further up the ramp before it lifts a wheel then find out which ones can keep climbing the ramp using whatever traction aid it has (such as 4 lock or computer braking traction aid.) It wouldn't have to be a very steep ramp (because most of them don't have great approach angles.) Once you perfected the ramp it would bee simple to compare any CUV they test to another. It would be fair and wouldn't rely as much one type of tire.

The Ruts and Guts rating would be best quoted as RUTS... It makes sense too; a tire with a higher Ruts rating would be one that gets you farther up the trail- the better tire. Yep.. Very simple.. 1 Rut to 7 Ruts ... Straight forward meaning... Not sure why one would choose to buy the Honda over the Toyota when you state that the AWD drive system is better on the Toyota. Then you have a CVT vs a conventional trans ( and issues that come up with CVT's like winding up, inability to pass as much torque, etc ) - so not sure why one would choose the Honda; looks is like a fad, and getting from point A to point C is the reason for a vehicle, and mechanically, it seems that the better vehicle is the RAV4.

Volvo really needs to explain the differences in their standard program and sport. I continue to see reviewers use the transmission sport and then complain about understeer. Volvo implements a very Jekyll and Hyde system in their AWD vehicles. Engage transmission sport and change DSTC to sport and you'll find a very different feel at the front as well power on rotation in tight corners. The current XC60 T6 AWD Sport can quite easily 4 wheel drift around tight corners if set up correctly.

99% of the time it's down to the driver and tyre type not the car. In this video you can clearly tell they had the traction control turned off for dramatic effect, and they didn't explain the centre diff lock well enough on the RAV. Poor video review in my opinion.

your videos are not very informative... Regardless i live in a very cold snowy area,i have seen hundreds of cars on snow since i was a child,my parents and i would even get stuck sometimes. When they bought a Subaru Station wagon we would plow into almost 10 inches of snow in front of our house and not get stuck,they later bought an Audi Quattro and it was a monster. currently i own a Volkswagen Tiguan and i have never been stuck yet. the only crossover the Rav4 will surpass is the CRV i see them stuck everywhere with BMWs and that is not an accomplishment. you can watch plenty of videos or just compare by using off road tests with somebody else.

b/c people don't always want to buy a Subaru, that's why. sorry to say, but Toyota is more reliable. Subarus rust out, their headgaskets blow out, they consume oil even well before the low tension piston ring fiasco, and they are in general high maintenance. Toyota's torque vectoring AWD system is sufficient for almost all of the consumers who would be purchasing an SUV in this class. no one takes their SUV on a closed course hill with frictionless rollers positioned in specific places to intentionally fool an AWD system like Honda and Toyota. news flash, turning on ESC solves most problems. also, i have never been stuck in my RAV4 that was the fault of the AWD system. it was always the tires or driver error

What I get out of this is both CUVs are equally average, your ratings system is pointless, and for some reason you had some LUV* footage you didn't know how else to use. *Luxury Utility Vehicle. I just made that awesome shish up.

What is more important to you? The engine or those tires/accessories? If the engine dies how much it will cost you to repair? Don't judge a car buy it's accessories or features judge by it's engines. I will go for the toyota rav4 and the honda earthdreams engine sucks!

Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk is what you would want then. The only vehicle in it's class to offer one. They also have a v6 if you want to tow with it. At first I wasn't a fan of it's looks but then it grew on me. Im kind of interested in getting one now with the v6
