2016 BMW K 1600 GT Sport Motorcycle Review - Sport Touring bikes are my personal favorite at the moment for the types of roads and riding that I primarily do. I ride mostly one-up, so that certainly factors in to what I look for when buying a bike vs. what's best with a passenger. The K1600 is an all around fantastic bike, and something you need to ride and try before you buy, if you are thinking it's like others in the class. The best way I can sum this up is a cross between an FJR and an F6B. However it moves FAR better than the F6B, just keeping the overall body feel at low speeds and electric like pull. It loves to be revved so don't be afraid to treat it like a screamer! Also make sure you try the regular vs. the sport. I found the included Comfort Seat to be hands down the most comfortable I have ever rode on, yet the included windscreen would be tossed the moment I got it home.

Hi ,I own K1600 GT Beamer l bought nearly a year ago best bike I’ve ever ridden & so smooth & fast. I’ve been riding everywhere on it in NSW & clocked up 18,000 kays My mirrors are always been tight never been loose & they don’t vibrate . I recommend this bike especially for touring 😎👍

Own a 2015" K1600 GT and also a customized Harley Breakout that's "juiced." Racing engine/tran/pipes, etc., etc.. Two totally different bikes but the BMW is w/o a doubt one great riding/handling cycle with great power and balance. The Harley is another animal. Love both of them. Good review. Can't wait to see BMW Motorrad's next K 1600 rendition.

Just wanted to stop and say Thanks for this review, I ended up buying a 2014 used I found with 232 miles on it after watching a bunch of reviews but honestly found yours the most helpful, once the sport windshield is replaced it's a fantastic ride. Love it, thanks again from a former concours14 and indian chieftain owner

rear brake pulse is because of linked brakes. You do not need to use the rear brake as when you pull on the front brake lever is also brakes the rear wheel. Well at least it is on my 2011 GTL.

Test rode the GT version about two years ago prior to my FJR. Totally agree with you about all the points you raised and commented on. Just an outstanding machine....yep there is that "but"! I was getting ready to sign when another buyer drove his brand new K1600 off the lot and got a mile down the road when the water pump died on him. Needless to say that new owner was PO'd!!! Hence the FJR!

+Shawn Kuse new BMW's always seem to have dodgy reliability, some of the models anyways. When the S1000 came out a few of them set on fire, the GS's have a dodgy sub frame and dodgy switch gear (cruise control faults etc.). I've seen a few 10 year old Beemers on the road that are covered in rust too. My friends 8 year old Audi is going the same way. I just think German vehicles are over rated unless you are getting a brand new one every few years.

+Crana I really like the BMW line of bikes. Just all that integrated luxury type options that set it apart from other manufacturers. I respect the fact that I can take any BMW bike off the lot for test rides, whereas most other non BMW dealers laugh at that prospect. To take a 25k bike for a test ride speaks volumes when other dealers won't even let you do that with a 12k bike. If it were not for the reliability aspect I would be an owner.

Two years ago I got the opportunity to testride one of the first K1600's sixes. I am a Yamaha FJR1300 rider myself. I was very impressed by the big Beemer, especially the enormous torque and the fantastic acceleration. If I'd have the money, I'd love to buy one, just for the fun of the sound of this beautiful sixcilinder engine(sound). Even more beautiful than my old 1980 Honda CBX sixcilinder.Alas, here in Holland, I have heard quite some alarming stories about the unreliable electrical systems on board of these big Beemers. Also, I got reports from the Dutch police force, which also uses K1600's, who complain a lot about the bike tending to overheat whilst running idle for a longer time. I hope B.M.W. has done something about these complains?

+Ken Kaufman It would be nice if the "Leader" would allow a little countersteering, braking/acceleration so the prospective customers could get a better sense of the bike. I won't buy a bike unless the sales person accompanies me to the nearest MSA course or open area via the freeway.

+Sky King Interesting comment... I've test ridden a K1600GTL for about an hour at one Los Angeles area BMW dealer; both a K1600GTL and R1200RTWC at another; and a R1200GSA WC from another. No salesman ever accompanied me - they just gave me the keys and let me go after making a photocopy of my license and signing a standard liability form. The new GSA was loaned to me when the dealer was changing my K1200LT's tires. I went to the local Yamaha dealer and asked about a test ride on an FJR and they said the only time they do that is about once a year, about 40 miles away on a course. I would not buy a bike I can't test ride, unsupervised.

Steve, I'm seriously considering doing just the same and have a K1600GT SE lined up. However I do like my FJR so am wondering if I'm doing the right thing! The FJR engine is superb but the bike is just a bit lacking in modern electronics and equipment, which the K has in bucketloads. However the K seems much bigger and less agile than the FJR. Any thoughts on helping me make the final decision?
@VRFlightSimGuy
@VRFlightSimGuy 5 жыл бұрын
@@goldwingrider7372 The K1600gt even though heavier, feels as nimble in the twisties for me (I'm no knee dagger) due to its amazing suspension. I love all the little details such as the air vents (mentioned on this video), tyre pressure gauge, cruise control, heated seat, fantastic cockpit display, hell I even love the audio (somethng I never thought I'd say on a bike), the central locking panniers once you've used them you cannot turn back. However, the star of the show for me is that creamy smooth 6 cylinder engine. I always hated how much my FJR vibrated, this thing is in a different league. However, I will say I loved my FJR too, I managed a 700 mile day back from Germany this summer. But there is not doubt if you want the best sporty grand tourer out there right now, this is it. I've noticed the K16 gets way more attention too, it somehow has more sex appeal haha. Just a great looking bike. Best of luck with your decision, they're both superb bikes.

@@VRFlightSimGuy That's very interesting! I did bite the bullet and bought a new K1600GT SE in October 2019 and sold my FJR1300 ES to a FJR fan. Fortunately it came with a 3 year warranty and a free 2 year service plan. The K1600 is a lovely bike and I've been very impressed with it's performance, handling and features, however for various reasons I've only managed to do 600 miles on it so far. BUT ....very disappointingly, it's already been recalled by BMW due to a manufacturing fault with the gearbox - affects all K1600s built between 2016 to 2019 I believe, so it's booked in for some major surgery and first service in the next few days. What have been the reliability issues you've had with your K1600 then?
@VRFlightSimGuy
@VRFlightSimGuy 4 жыл бұрын
@@davidallen1213 Congrats on your new K16! You did good on the warranty. For me after 8000 miles the dreaded coil failures and coolant leak occured.. Even BMW admit they can 'go' at any point and they cost £500+ a pop. Luckily I had mine done under warranty (which hopefully you will too). Other issues which are common on all models is the awful drive train lash (or final drive), used to drive me insane when just before closed throttle going down hill. Felt like a bucking bronco. Unfortunately I just fell out of love with it very quickly knowing it's not going to be a bike that will easily reach 100k miles without plenty of dealer attention. I actually made a short video about it here>> kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y5rCn6OifM19bMU

The sport mirrors you refer to (at 12:00) in your excellent review are tighter on my 2018 K1600GT and don’t vibrate as you suggest and also, adjusting the mirror within the casing provides a better rear view image without seeing elbows but it takes a few times. I changed my arm position because of this issue as well and now ride with my elbows in which provides less wind resistance yet still comfortable. Hope that helps.

Nice review, I've only seen one K1600 in New Zealand and it was in a dealers for sale second hand. Is undoubtedly a very nice bike with a few very nice points in particular but I have to say for the average riding interested in a bigger sport tourer they're almost prohibitive at their price point. A new FJR is NZ$27k, the Concours is about the $25k. The K1600GT is about NZ$46-47k from memory and goes up from there, just too much imho,, if it were say $6-7k the difference in could maybe see something in it but not $19-20k dearer. That's just taking the piss I reckon..

Some points - Signals do self cancel; Jog wheel tilts for enter; mirrors do appear to be on a spring but i am not distracted by vibration (at least now I have had the front wheel replaced (it had a warped rim - they changed it under warranty)). I also like the digital speedo but if you are using audio system, audio info is displayed instead of the speedo. Didn't find an option to change so its audio on/no speedo or audio off / speedo. Slightly annoying, if someone can say I am wrong I would be happy.

The control wheel on the left handlebar not only scrolls up and down, but pivots left and right, giving you 'mouse-like' control. You should be able to select and push, or also push to select sub-menus, I think. I'd have to go back and look at the manual again. You have found the bike I want, even over the FJR, but right now, both are out of my grasp, and becoming unemployed at the end of next week won't help any. These are great bikes hard to find a fault the only two I've found are the coils I've had 2 go bad within a year $500 parts and labour that's just for one and you have to replace the $30 spark plug to otherwise no warranty with it,I've got 18000 miles on mine and I'm finding out this is a common problem I'm sure the coils are cooking themselves in this big engine, fans kick on all the time ,I think this issue should have been a recall, 2nd fault for me is the gear box so clunky with so much travel between gears I miss gears all the time still after 4000 miles under me belt,I would definitely test ride one before you buy not for everyone especially if your short it's super heavy,I bought this bike cause it was on my bucket list I'm sure I will trade to a rt in the future, also the 18000 service is very expensive on the k1600 ,if anything this bike has made me appreciate my GS1200 for overall ride ability

Nice overall review. I've owned this same/similar model for the last 2 years and prior to this an earlier model FJR. This is an outstanding motorcycle with superior sport touring performance and manuvering capabilities in any speed and at any rpms without, for the most part, any vibrations. Moreover, the exhaust sound is simply inebriating at higher rpms. Strangely, I never experienced any vibrating mirrors issues whether on short riding excursions or extended trips. However, and in order to enhance both rear view angles, l added small wide-angle mirrors within both my side mirrors.

Fabulous review! As we own the GTLE version of the K1600, I was eagerly awaiting your review and you didn't disappoint. Thankfully you were able to throw the bike around some and let your viewers hear that totally unique exhaust note! In a world where most bikes now sound like sewing machines it's great to hear a proper bike sound! Would we go back to the FJR? Yes of course we would but having ridden the K1600 around the great twisty roads we have in the North of England and Scottish Borders, I sure would miss this super comfortable bike with its tremendous amount of torque. is this bike "boring"? I'm looking for a interstate commuter type bike (2hr one way), but i don't like FJR type sport tourers. I rode my buddy's FJR and it was just boring and seemed like a "straight line" bike. The K1600 GT seems like it might be the same. I think i would like the comfortable ride and wind protection and smooth ride, but I'm kinda leaning more toward the Ducati multi 1200s (saw your video on that one too). What is your recommendation?

Excellent review. My neighbor has the BMW K 1600 GTL "Exclusive" that cost 33K out the door. So far she's had a cooling system failure (over heated) and a electronic/software failure (wouldn't start). The repairs are covered under warranty but the BMW service departments are backlogged in areas with year round riding like Phoenix. Some dealers will actually ship/trailer your bike to a dealership in a seasonal riding area like Denver where the service department is not as busy. Your bike may be left outside in the snow btw.

Thanks for posting and providing valuable observations. Here is some engineering background: Tire nipples? You mean valve stems? (Relax, close enough) Oh yes, I`m sure they engineered some vibration into the brake pedal. I would have done the same. Only on the right side. And for fun, one of the headlights, too. What do you think the design frequency was they are going for? 50Hz? Pedal probably doubles then as an emergency radio. Vibration noticed by laymen are design flaws that could loosen some bolts at the wrong time, fatigues metal and the rider. It`s a safety problem. Mirror stems are mounted flexibly to hide some undealt with vibrations. If they are that soft, that`s what you get. Yeah, another engineering fault, mirrors of limited clarity and field. It`s not like optics wasn`t known since way before Galileo`s time (1610). I`m sure BMW can catch up soon.

motorcycle.com did a sports-touring shoot-out and had this one winning over the FJR in 2014. I thought it was the wrong category for this bike. I think it belongs in a shoot-out with the Goldwing (something you said it reminds you of). Do you agree? I always thought that the R1200RT would be a better bike to compare with the FJR and Concours... Also - how do you think this stacks up to the FJR after being on it? Is it a huge step up besides the added tech?
@toneyhays6970

+Tommy Thompson There is a shoot-out between the Goldwing and a K1600GTL which is the full touring BMW. The BMW won hands down. The GT & GT Sport is more for the Sport Touring crowd than the GTL/GTL-E is. Also they did a shoot out with the R1200 RT with the FJR & Concours & Triumph and the R1200RT was voted best bike also. It's hard to beat a BMW in the touring classes of bikes.

+Tommy Thompson He should feel great! The FJR is my #2 pick behind the K1600GT. The reviews always place the FJR above the Triumph, Kawasaki, and Honda ST1300.(who they have stopped reviewing altogether) The FJR is also $1000.00's less that the BMW R1200 RT, making it a more affordable Sport Touring option. The one to watch is now Triumph. They are looking at the FJR and wanting a piece of the Sport Touring action.

+seeaboutagirl2 Mine too! But, if reality would get it's act together, my local BMW dealer has a 2006 K1200GT with less than 30,000 miles on it. Not all the features and gear of the K1600GT, but used, at $7,500, not a bad deal, either. Also, another dealer down the road has a 2005 K1200S for $5K, with less than 20,000 miles on it. I KNOW that would put a smile on my face. :)

+Gary C You're absolutely right .. reality is there's no K1600GT purchase in my future anytime soon. It's not so much I can't afford it, but more I don't want to devote such a big sum on a bike. Besides the FJR, I also like the Triumph Trophy.

seeaboutagirl2 There are a lot of bikes for under $10K, new and used, that I would be utterly happy to own. The K1600GT/GTL/GTL-E isn't one of them. I'm looking for a long distance commuter, mostly highway, some city (but not much), and something to head out on the weekends for a photo trip or just a get away from it all trip.

Thanks, really like your reviews. Honest and informative. I currently ride a 2005 BMW R1200RT and haven't tested the liquid cooled boxer. If you have access, could you review the New R1200RT LC. I would like your honest opinion comparing your FJR, this K1600GT and the RT, as these will be my choices when I make my next purchase when I trade. Thank you so much for the excellent channel and reviews.

BMW K1600 GT Sport - It looks gigantic. You never mentioned its weight. 900 lbs? I'm considering a ZX14R or Concours14. I'll have to test ride first, of course. I've always owned Kawasakis. Loyalty to a bulletproof brand. The K doesn't look easy to work on. Give me analog clocks, a real throttle cable and separate front and rear brakes, please. I have also been considering the air-cooled BMW R1150 or 1200 RT as they seem easy to work on and the prices are right. Liked and Subscribed.

Comparing this bike to an FJR in terms of handling is similar to comparing them in terms of price. The K16 rips through corners and brakes in ways the FJR can only wish for. FJR is an excellent bike, but there is a reason for the price difference, and it has nothing to do with the badges on the side...

The only reason I did not buy a BMW is that. In the Chicago area. The dealer network is very small. And I did not really like any of the dealers either. So unless things really change. Which I doubt will ever happen. I will never own one. I would get the New FJR instead.

I want to choose 1 bike for city commuting & out of city driving, I would say 50/50 use for both cases. Would this be a good choice? Btw - I'm 5'10. Most I want a comfortable out of city bike for longer 200-300km/day trips, but as well a nice enough in-the-city machine for day to day. Would you recommend this one or say S1000XR?

Fantastic! Thanks for the review. The sound coming off that engine is music to my ears. Just the engine is like 60% of my motivation to buy one, LOL. I've been eyeballing these (GT & GTL) pretty hard since they came out and now that they have been around for a bit and racked up some mileage they are starting to look "somewhat affordable" to my budget and probably the best tool for the type of riding i do (long stretches of highway almost no curves or bends, sounds like S.FL, right ? lol). The only thing that would make these bikes even greater would be if BMW made a DCT version off of it like Honda's VFR1200, THAT AND a K1600S, RS or Roadster. (very evil grin). If there's a chance i would really appreciate it if you could test the GTL version (the one that makes more sense for my riding style) but as it is i'm pretty happy with this review because the hard bits are almost the same for both models. Thanks!

Tire presure monitor sucks big time!! Very inaccurate...they're all like that...it's a factory thing and they're not to be relied on!! BMW seats are nortoriously horrible as far as all day comfort...none of them are very good for an all day ride, but tolerable, overall they make awesome motorcycles!! The turn signals are self cancelling. And question for you, why would you lift your left foot and rest it on top of the shift lever. From a training standpoint, by you doing so, can cause you to accidentally downshift and if you are not expecting that, that action may cause you to put yourself in a crash condition. I'd recommend not resting your foot on top of the shift lever. Be safe.

Watching the guy in front of you ride right down the middle of the lane right where all the oil drips are, as you were also most time...no thank you. Been riding street bikes since 1979. Either ride left or right or center. Left of center if you're in front, next right of center, left, right and so on. Nothing worse than 50 miles of crap on your tires and then a panic stop. Even with ABS, it will cause you grief.

Reliability issues? The old 1200 LT's had problems, but they have been out of production for over 10 years. Ride a big Harley hard and long and tell me about reliability, lol! I have over 100k mi on various BMWs and have never had one not get me home. That said, Goldwings are nearly bullet proof - if you can stand to ride one that long. I don't want an appliance, I want a love affair...

@mramsterdam1000
@mramsterdam1000 8 жыл бұрын
NZsarge1 no. Tje telelever is the system up front which uses forks without springs and a shock. The duolever is a newer system which doesnt have moving forks at all, just a sensitive shock and bearings between the bars and the solid metal forks. The monolever is the system at the back, which is basically a shaft drive and a shock combined. The monolever also uses a separate shock to further dampen/stiffen the ride according to what the rider wants.
