For 2017 Nissan has refined the Pathfinder giving family oriented shoppers more of what they want while retaining the Nissan's main selling points of a soft suspension, large third row and high fuel economy.

@bobalobalie
@bobalobalie 6 жыл бұрын
Since Nissan decided to use fake gear shifts in the Pathfinder's CVT. The "shifting" is actually slower than pretty much all geared transmissions made in the past 20 year. You clearly have no idea how a CVT actually works. Perhaps you will educate yourself. And learn that these "shifts" reduce power and fuel economy compared to letting a CVT simply do what it was designed to do.

We love our Pathfinder Platinum, we're about to get a 2nd one, but I'm trying to hold out until the redesign. Drives well, good fuel economy, WAY more space than the previous 2012 and older generation. I'm 6'5" and trust me that old one was nowhere near as roomy.

Hi Alex, You mentioned towing and this is one of the reasons we are considering the pathfinder. Regarding towing, do you think the feel would be dramatically different with the FWD vs the AWD? There does not appear to be any AWD versions within 100 miles of where I live. I might have to settle for a FWD version and was wondering whether there would be towing issues with this. Thanks much. I love the videos! Great reviews!

Alex, Nissan/Infiniti's are very sensitive to regular and or premium fuel. If they recommend premium for maximum performance, they mean it! Run regular in one that recommends premium and the difference is noticeable. So when you acquire your test vehicles, do you use or make sure the fuel you add is that of the recommended or is it anything that's considered before testing?

The Platinum model that I drive every day rides very firmly actually - you feel every bump and road imperfection. The air conditioning is surprisingly very weak not just for a Nissan (my, 2010 Altima still has ice cold AC) but for any make. Even worse than Honda and Acura, notoriously weak in that department. Great features like cooled seats, heated steering wheel and panoramic moontoof don't make up for that. Get the SL with 18" wheels for the better ride and make sure the AC is working. I'd go with Highlander or Durango used. And Telluride/Palisade new.

I dunno about you, but the Pilot is significantly roomier inside (both passenger and cargo), wider specifically. I own a 2015 Pathfinder. My aunt has a 2016 Pilot. Either way, direct-injection is a nice update, though it would be more practical if it improved the MPG instead of adding 24 bhp that you won't actually feel, or ever need. This also adds pressure to their own Infiniti QX60, the main reason why they intentionally keep the Pathfinder's dashboard made of hard plastic! I hope they use the 400hp 3.0TT in the new QX60!

I'm surprised you didn't comment on the new LED lights available for the first time on the Pathfinder. Additionally, 2016 and earlier models DO NOT have bluetooth sync on the entry model which is standard on cars half the price of the Pathfinder. Do not buy 20 in wheels-they look good but are noisy and the ride is somewhat bumpy, also good luck finding snow tires in that size.

how does Nissan pathfinder compare with Infinity qx60? are your scores rated against vehicles of the same class or universal? e.g. does a "A" for ride in a Nissan pathfinder mean it has as good as a ride as an "A" of a Volvo xc90? Does 9/10 for front seats of Pathfinder mean they are more comfortable than 8/10 for Infiniti qx60? Clarifying that would help a lot. Thank you!

I'd probably go Kia, Highlander, Pathfinder if you don't need the 2nd row that can slide forward while a child seat is in place. It depends on your cargo demands. The Kia & Toyota are notably smaller than the Nissan.

Sorento is probably the best value in this segment in terms of driving dynamics, luxury and features. I compared it to a Lexus RX350 and while the RX interior seems slightly higher quality, Sorento was quieter, handled better and was smoother over uneven Bay Area roads.
@afzalnak
@afzalnak 8 жыл бұрын
Thanks, it is also coming out to be bit less expensive when financing. However, I always thought that Toyota would be more reliable and checking some other reviews online they were ranking Highlander to be #1 over Sorento. But I also see that Limited Highlander still has some of the features missing that seems to be included in Sorento SX+ (Lane depart + Collision assist warning). And I heard that soon it would be compatible with carplay, correct?
@akshayd82
@akshayd82 8 жыл бұрын
My 17' Sorento already has Carplay and reliability is at par with Toyota. Kia is also givign 16' models free update for AA and CP. The 3.3 (3350) V6 engine and transmission has been in use since 6-7 years now and has proved to be very reliable. It is also more powerful (290hp) and faster (6.9s 0-60) than the highlander 3.5(3450) V6. Test drive them all. Highlander felt really cheap when I compared it to the Sorento

Does it have the same CVT woes as the 2014 Pathfinder? My neighbor was very disappointed with his 2014 Pathfinder after numerous trips to the Nissan dealership, they tried to brush off the jerky transmission issue many times until he complained directly to Nissan. I really like the the 2nd row folding mechanism and the usable 3rd row space.

The 2017 still has a CVT, but it is similar to the Maxima's and Murano's CVT units, basically uses Nissan third gen of its CVT. It's not exactly like them though because the Pathfinder is tweak to tow 6000 lbs.

Great video. This is definitely a vehicle to consider. Towing is important to me and the extra thousand pounds makes a real difference. 2 Questions: 1) what did you mean that a CVT tows differently from a regular transmission? 2) This vs. a Dodge Durango? (2 children to fit in)
@AAutoBuyersGuide
@AAutoBuyersGuide 8 жыл бұрын
The CVT's lowest ratio isn't very low compared to the Durango or Pilot. This means that hill starts with a trailer are considerably more sluggish when you have 5,000+ lbs attached. So while 0-30 times aren't too much slower unladen, adding a trailer has a much larger impact in the Pathfinder than the others. If you plan on regularly towing, the Durango is really on the only option in this segment with a robust towing setup.
@zmeiners
@zmeiners 8 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the fast reply. I wouldn't say I tow "regularly" (4-5 times a year) I have a 4500 lb. boat+trailer+gear setup and so the 5000 lb. limit most SUV's have seemed inadequate (I currently use a chevy trailblazer). So this 6000 lb. capacity seemed pretty cool when the only other choice seemed like the Durango without going full size SUV or Luxury. Dodge's reliability worries me a bit, and the Nissan's family friendliness seemed great. I'll look forward to the full review.
@AAutoBuyersGuide
@AAutoBuyersGuide 8 жыл бұрын
As someone who also twos with GM"s GMT360 vehicles (a GMC Envoy and now a 9-7x Aero), the towing experience in the Dodge is going to be better than the feel of the GMT360 while I would rate the Pathfinder behind the GMT.

Hi Zach. I was looking at a Pathfinder to replace my Ford Explorer. I really liked it but I was scared off by the reliability ratings. I ended up buying a used Lexus GX460 which I got for under $30,000 with 39K miles. I only mention it because I never in a million years thought I could afford a Lexus but the GX460 is an amazing truck that can tow over 6,000 lbs....has rock solid reliability....and is still a Mid-Sized SUV.

Alex, you asked us what we think about CVT's. I just tried out a Subaru Forester XT with one and it too tried to imitate a transmission with set gears. I thought I'd like that but I actually don't. It doesn't feel like a regular transmission doing it and I think it robs the linear power delivery. Accelerating onto an on ramp I saw the tach jump down to 2000 rpm. Would have been faster if it just stayed high in the rpm range and held it there.
@rrmulder
@rrmulder 7 жыл бұрын
I have a 2014 XT. For normal driving I prefer the 'sport' driving mode, which does not use artificial gear shifts. You must have been using 'sport#' mode, which imitates an 8 speed auto. I find sport# better for very aggressive race-type driving, as it holds the RPMs up quite high.
@yippie6862
@yippie6862 7 жыл бұрын
Reyer Mulder Hey Reyer, that test drive was my first time in one. Perhaps it was in one of the two sport modes? I thought it was in normal mode however.
@rrmulder
@rrmulder 7 жыл бұрын
I believe the transmission and drive modes on the new FXT models is still the same as my 2014. It is actually kind of complicated - you have a lot of driving options. The normal/default drive mode is 'i/intelligent' mode, which is smooth, fuel efficient, and non-shifting. The 'sport' mode is similarly non-shifting, but more responsive and feels much peppier. 'sport#' is the most aggressive mode, it will imitate an 8speed auto and hold revs high when you let off the gas. When using the paddle shifters, sport mode gives you 6 manual gears and sport# gives you 8 manual gears. I don't use the paddle shifters much, but when I do, I prefer the sport mode with 6 gears. Hope that helps with your shopping. I love the vehicle, BTW. 50k miles, no problems, fun to drive. Best vehicle I've owned.

You can get some great deals on used Pathfinders... BUT (and it's a huge "but") I am still leery of the CVT, given Nissan's history. A fully loaded Pathfinder, or a Pathfinder towing a small camper, would be one thing going along I-5. Take it up into the Cascade Mountains to Mount Hood or Bend, OR, or to Lake Tahoe, climbing 4,000+ feet with plenty of serpentine curves and elevation changes makes me concerned about both the ability of a Pathfinder with CVT to get there, but the long-term durability of that CVT itself. Even if one religiously changes the CVT fluid at recommended service levels (and more frequently with severe service such as towing), I'm still dubious about it.

Auto 4WD of Pathfinder is very confusing. The owner's manual says "do not operated 4WD when starting engine or should drive in straight road." I do not think that it is "Auto" 4WD. It is same with conventional 4H mode in 4WD. Why is it named with "auto"?

Yes, but only because there is a lot of room behind the seat to squeeze through (and a very large door). I cant stand the fact the CVT has the shifting, let it be CVT. Note My Altima 2013 had a CVT transmission replaced after 2 years and still didn't run properly. I used it as a trade-in for the 2017 Nissian Pathfinder Platinum only to have the wiring harness replaced after a week, that didn't resolve the issue. Without going into too much detail, the engine was replaced and now I'm working with Nissian Consumer Affairs, it has been deemed a Lemon as of 1 1/2 weeks ago and we are now in the process of negotiations. I do have to say although this has been a most unpleasant experience, The Dealership and Nissian Consumer Affairs have top notch Service. Troubles aside they have it together for that portion. As far as the CVT Transmission not so much and in my experience all though most likely rare and this being my second Nissan I'm disappointed and frustrated. There are so many great qualities to the vehicles. Leave the Transmission alone, if people want to feel the shifting, then get a manual.

Definitely want CVT to behave as CVT. They weren't banned by Formula 1 because they imitated stepped transmission, they were banned because they were so much more superior in their natural state.

They had to do the CVT emulation so people will think it's a stepped transmission.

Pathfinder, Pilot, or Highlander? I'd say the Pilot has been more reliable, and the infotainment system with the new Android and Apple carplay has the new interface and makes it more appealing.. can you tell us which of those 3 is the best overall

Personally the pathfinder feels the most comfortable with the nice seats good fuel economy and a great nav system

The new Pilot has horrible reliability especially with the bad transmission, cheap interior and horrible infotainment system. See consumer reviews on edmunds, etc.

I don't like CVTs, But if Nissan is going to force-feed me a CVT transmission, then I would want it to act like one. Not to pretend to to have gears just for the sound of it. What's next fake v12 engine sounds through the radio speakers of electric cars.....

So the pathfinder has cooled seats but the Infiniti Q50 and Q60 doesn't. This is why I question Infiniti. Hell the q70 has cooled seats.

if u want your CVT to imitate traditional automatic, don't buy a CVT car in the first place.
