Matt! Thank you for letting us hear from you and the engineers on this new lineup. I spent the afternoon volunteering at the H-D demo truck with the 2018 lineup! They're amazing. Harley-Davidson has really delivered this time! I got to move a few and helped get a lot of people take a demo ride. There will be another truck coming through in a few weeks and I'm gonna ride em.

As a master technician, I definitely appreciate the engineering of everything. Like the anti backlash spring loaded gear drive for the counterbalancers. A lot of hate out there because the Dyna is gone. Some people hate change. But sometimes change is what you need to pull in new riders to the brand. Case in point; the V-Rod had the traditional bar and shield diehards saying they wouldn't be caught dead on one while outsiders said that is the only Harley they would ever consider buying.

Seeing it bare bones and hearing its all brand new engineering really gives a different perspective. Screw the haters Matt. This video is super informative. It also makes a lot of valid points. For those of us who remember when Harley first came out with the Evo, and what, rubbermounting(?), this is the Moco returning to it's roots. They've taken the best things about all of the bikes they've ever made, and combined them into a package that not only looks killer, but it very promising in it's delivery. Give it a little time. People will be flocking to buy them. By 2020, you'll see most of the people riding them. Same thing happened when the TC came out. At first everyone said, no way, but by 2001, most everyone I knew was on one. Great video. Your vids always explain leagues more than anyone else does. Thanks.

So far so good, all the old dudes at my work got some Suzukis and my bike looks the best and sounds the best. Get compliments on it from all sorts of people. The bike is bad ASS, I really dig the new HD...... oh yes I also got newer 1000RR two different animals but love them both. Would I get another HD in the future, yes because an overall experience was pleasant from selecting the bike, their service and riding it. People who are considering of getting a new bike should give a new HD a chance.

Fantastic video as usual. Just one doubt: on the bikes that do not have the external knob to tune the rear suspension, is it necessary to take the seat off or something else in order to adjust the pre-load of the shock ?
@hornet2245 жыл бұрын
At 7:17 My question for Ben Wright: From an engineering standpoint, there is a gap on both sides of the upper swing arm that holds the shock/spring. It would seem to me that lateral torsion forces during high energy acceleration or heavy cornering loads would cause the suspension to twist or torque laterally that would upset the handling. Why is there no linkage to stabilize deflection?

Hello Matt, Thanks for the new softails video. My question is, is it possible to upgrade the 2018 softail slim rear tire, with a wider 200 tire, and change the rear fender to bob fender, to get the exact rear look of the 2011 softail cross bones . Thanks
@MattLaidlaw7 жыл бұрын
+Sam Shms I don't know the for sure answer here but I seriously doubt you can put a 200 mm rear tire on there with the stock swing arm and spacing. I'm sure you could put a bobbed fender if you can find one that fits that frame which I don't know if it exists yet.

Hello Matt, Thank you so much for bringing us in to the dealer show and giving your viewers a inside view. Being a precision machinists and have worked with mechanical engineers I was especially interested listening to both engineers as they walked us through. After viewing your live dealer show and seeing the direction Harley is moving in performance frame geometry and suspension systems...my gut feeling is Harley Davidson will begin to redesign a high performance frame and platform for the touring models next! Lighter, more rigid, faster, better performance in terms of handling... thus safer for everyone riding one.. Great to see Harley is moving to performance oriented chassis designs. Thank you Matt.

GREAT video, Matt. Really. I appreciate that Harley is starting to think about weight reduction. However, no disrespect meant, 30 pounds on a 316kg softail heritage is like putting makeup on your 90-year old grandma and say "see? She's a hottie now!". There is much more to be done, especially with the powertrain. Anyways it's a start, and I think ALL customers will appreciate that. Putting aside the rethoric "steel is better", noone prefers a heavier bike over a lighter one.
@MattLaidlaw7 жыл бұрын
Francesco Galli it makes a biggger Difference than you think. You'd be surprised.
@cinghialemannaro767 жыл бұрын
I'm pretty sure it does, but I bet it's more the stiffness of the frame than the actual weight loss. 15kgs on 316kgs is about 5%, so it is noticeable but not that much.

Francesco Galli yea. The frame stiffness makes a big difference.

Matt, Another terrific video, extremely informative. Would you be so kind as to let me know the difference in the front & rear seat comfort between the Fatboy and the Heritage Softail models. I am interested in upgrading from my '17 1200 Custom to one of these two bikes. I would put a windshield and bags on the Fatboy, just like the Heritage has (from the factory). Also, any idea why the Heritage does not come standard with a backrest? Thanks for all you do!
@MattLaidlaw7 жыл бұрын
+Kevin Fasone from just sitting on them at a stand-still the heritage is definitely more comfy. The Fatboy is kinda carved out as a "boulevard cruiser". It's got more of a firm seat to it. The passenger seat is not comfortable at all. The heritage has some passenger comfort. I really don't know why they did away with the passenger back rest. If you're gonna put bags and a windshield on the Fatboy I would absolutely just go with the heritage.
@kevinfasone45567 жыл бұрын
Matt Laidlaw - Thank you Matt for taking the time to answer my questions, I appreciate it! I think at this point I will eventually test ride the '18 Heritage & the '18 Road King and choose our upgrade from there. We aren't looking to go across the country, however, hours of cruising comfort are important to both my wife and I. I do not care for the fairing look, therefore, other touring models are not of interest to me. The 1200 is our first bike & we love the Harley experience! Keep the vid's coming, you do a spectacular job.... I watch them all! -all the best

Hola Matt, I’m late to the party but finally living the dream. I love this deep dive mentality, Retired Submarine Warfare and Surface Warfare sailor. We believe in knowing almost as much as the engineer on everything. Four weeks ago I purchased my first Harley, a 2020 Fat Boy with 160 miles on it. I tried to get one from Tokyo H-D in 2000 when I was living there but Japan had restrictions on the size of everything imported. I have tripled the number of miles and just purchased a Scream’n 🦅 HB Elite, Woods 22XE, Two Brothers Turnout 2-into-1, 8” rise, 1.5” T-Bar because the Saddlemen Explorer bumped me up and forward. 6’1 280lbs. I will run that for a few years as I have set a good foundation for a big bore, CNC header, and large throttle body. I will finish my LED Mods with a pulsating brake strip under the finder to complement the 7” Adaptive 2, and the turn signals all around. I am spying a set of two finger triggers as well. Matt you are easy to trust, but it is almost uncanny, your perception and your ability to see where HD is heading before they get there. I don’t need validation for my purchase or modifications, but I must admit It feels good to know my thoughts on the Milwaukee 8 are shared. Yes, after all the issues it is where HD should be going while allowing for more out of every Mod. These cutaways are priceless, giving us an unrestricted peek behind the curtain to what is quite simply a work of art. Thank you kindly. (SS/SW/MTS) USN, Ret. 🦅 of a 🪶

Hi Matt, thanks for your videos! Could you provide some more information on the differences between stock 107 or 114 M8 engine and CVO 117? What are the differences besides the displacement and the twin cooling system? Do they utilize the same camshaft, pistons, flywheel or other components? Where does additional power of the CVO come from? Is the CVO 117 as upgradeable as the stock M8 (Stage II, III, IV)? Do the CVO models have same exhaust header pipes as the non CVO bikes? Or is it a different system? That's a lot of questions, but there isn't really much insight on the internet on CVO engine details. At least I couldn't find it, but it is really interesting and could help in choosing whether to buy a Road Glide Special and upgrade it or to buy one of the CVO bikes.

Wow great changes and they listened good to their customers... all the weak spots are gone now with the softails, super ! Can't wait to see them when they roll them in to Europe ! Thx Matt for the nice & detailed info on the new softails ;)

Matt, will you be going to the 2019 show and posting videos about the new 2019 models?
@MattLaidlaw6 жыл бұрын
Absolutely. I’ll be live streaming from the show and doing a bunch of videos after the fact as well.

Best video on new models by far. Great information. My daily fatboy ride is 21 years old. Id never sell it, but i actually really like the 2018 fatboy. Great video, thanks

Thanks for this video, Matt. Being an engineer myself I appreciate hearing from the designers of these great new bikes. Thanks also for all the softail reviews. I'm pretty sure I'll be picking up either a Heritidge Classic or Sport Glide this summer, just need to test ride them once we thaw out here in Indy!

Both great bikes man. The 2018 softails are just great all around motorcycles.

Great video Matt. Looking forward to your reviews of the 2018 bikes. Any chance a comparison between the 2017 Lowrider and the 2018 Lowrider?

That frame is such a nice looking piece of hardware, it looks beautiful. Huge improvement over the bikes it replaces. Wish they would have done a gear driven cam. If they changed to gear driven counter balancers, then why not the cam. It would put my mind at ease. Thanks for the video Matt! Hopefully I can buy one of these in a year or two.

I rode a 2018 114 Breakout and comparing it to mine it handles better than mine :( you can actually take a 2018 Harley Breakout to the twisties now !!!

OK Black Dog now I am curious, what do the folks in the Empire City MC suggest we ride?

I think I will keep my 2016 Breakout forever. I changed tires to the Metzeler. The bike is now more easily willing to get into the turns and corners.

Great video. I appreciate the fact Harley took a chance and updated their lineup. Now I'm waiting to see if it's aftermarket friendly or if it's going to harder to modify like newer cars.

Thanks for sharing Matt. You, Ben and Vern gave some great information. People don't like having their cheese moved but its going to happen. Just hope all of these changes makes H-D better & stronger so they are around for a lot longer.

Good job on the information Matt 🤙🏼 however, the engineer obviously had to "dodge" the cam chain vs gear question. He wouldn't be able to publicly state that HD doesn't see the need to spend the extra time and money to provide a crank shaft runout that would support gear driven cams.

Matt, Very impressive and well detail videos. Love them all. Fyi. I did have a chance try to ride on Fat Bob and Breakout with 114 engine both bikes are really phenomenal. Forget the OLD Dyna and even Breakout these 2 new bikes are very nimble and easy to turn especially Fat Bob with 114 like a rocket. Thanks Bro for all the information that you shared.
