I don’t let my 2012 hunt gears up and down when towing in hills, wind, or on grades. I limit the top gear to 4th or 5th or run M mode to hold a gear. I preselect climbing gears and pull grades in M at part throttle. Yes I can and do drive “semi trucks”. I don’t find the cruise programming very beneficial in the way it allows the speed to drop off then downshifts 1 or 2 gears then attempts to accelerate the vehicle back to set speed at 5000 rpm. My truck was bought from a commercial user who does good maintenance and it has been a great truck. Thanks for the video.

I used to work on these trucks. This generation of superduty is amazing. These trucks are utilitarian. The 6.2 and 6.7 are both amazing engines. Only issue with them (when I worked on them daily) was the block heater connector. They shorted out and caught fire sometimes

We couldn't find a need for anything more... But, we wanted the 48 gallon tank and the 10 speed transmission so even though we only had 11,000 miles on the F250 we just traded into a 2020 F350 and for an extra $1700 opted for the 7.3 gas.. Can't wait to try it out...

Hey Foxboss9, Great video. We have a '17 F250, short bed, 4door, FX4 gasser and love it! We pull a 32ft 5th-wheel that comes in just under 10k lbs and have had no problems so far. Last summer we put 3500 miles on the rig... from Austin TX, OKC, Branson MO, KCMO, Nashville then back home. Pulled the 4% graded around Branson like a boss! But, she is a hay burner for sure. Average 6.7 MPG on a 32 gallon tank = stopping every 176 miles to potty... and fillup. 🙂 If we get to go, this summer we going to Angel Fire NM and Durango CO. Will test her on some mountain passes on that trip for sure. I am rather envious of you though and I'm gonna have to subscribe to your channel just to see how that new Godzilla motor and 10 speed do. That just rig makes me drool! Keep us posted on how she pulls. Safe travels.

I saved a couple of your old videos as well; I used to have a 1997 F350 4x4 with a ZF-5 & 460. My friend has a well equipped 2017 Super Duty XLT Powerstroke that I really liked with similar camper/plow package as yours, but I ultimately ended up replacing mine with a GMC 2500HD because of the low height of my garage door. Still excited to see how well the new 7.3 gas engine transmission plays out for Ford. I think it will will be a real hit.

Thank you, this was very helpful. I'm looking at a SD now to tow a TT. I just sold a 3800lb TT and will be moving up to something a little heavier. Probably 5300lbs. While my 2016 RAM 1500 with Pentastar has enough TOW capacity, I constantly find myself running out of GVWR if I put a motorcycle in the bed or people in the back seat. That said, we're looking at a gas SD. I would hope towing something with the same surface area, (On the travel trailer) yet 3000lbs lighter, would return 10MPG at 60-65 MPH with the 6.2. If so, it's a even swap for me.

A lot of back roads “US highways”. Always between 9-11mpg with TT. Des Moines to Pensacola, to Galveston, back to Des Moines. Does 15-17mpg highway no towing if babied

Have 36 version of your TT ; a Rockwood 2906RS and a new f250 fx4 lariat sport 4x4. Towed 4;000 miles with it so far and can’t get more than 7.5 mpg out of it. Lock out 6 th and towing is fine torque except steep men’s. Thing I hate is the puny gas tank, 32 gal, only gives me 210 mile range. Have to stop for gas way too often. Looking for 60 gal tank replacement if anyone knows of Company selling them.
@Foxboss9
@Foxboss9 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I don't expect to get great gas mileage, but that again seven and a half miles per gallon in the Hills. Could be pretty average. No one makes the gas tank for this truck yet. . I was hoping that the company that just started making the F-150 tanks. Would Start making them for the F250. . The reason I was told was because the EPA is so strict on the emissions that they Can't do anything to become legal. But again, since they're making A bigger tank for the F-150. I would expect that those emission would be harder to meet then the HD truck. If you look in my previous videos. All I found was trucks with dual tanks. And my last truck had a 19 gallon front and a 38 gallon rear. Even though this truck does really well on gas. I definitely have range anxiety. Maybe now that they see that the 2020 has pretty much stayed the same they will go ahead and commit to making a larger gas tank. I've been wanting to try out a junkyard 48 gallon tank and see if I can make it fit. If it ever comes to that, I'll definitely be doing a video of it.

I didn't know that the six speed had 2 overdrives. I would have expected more than 7.3 mpg. Across the PA turnpike and it looks like she just kept pulling without any struggles. Is that 2nd temp gauge for the trans?
@Foxboss9
@Foxboss9 4 жыл бұрын
Yes transmission temperature Gage, also you can flip through the menu and have digital readout for just the transmission temperature if you like. The overall trip was 8.2 miles per gallon over 600 miles. Like I mentioned I think over 10,000 miles the engine May loosen up a little bit and do slightly better but there's a lot of hills across the PA Turnpike, and unfortunately Construction, and it's pretty twisty also. Reminds me a lot of the West Virginia Turnpike

@Foxboss9
@Foxboss9 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, just don't tell it like you normally Drive. What I mean is there's no reason to do 70 and 75 miles an hour. We try to average right around 55 to 63 miles per hour and you can not only expect the truck to do what you want it to but you may actually get okay gas mileage considering you're pulling a big box behind you in the Wind. However if you don't care about gas mileage I know this truck will do 75 miles an hour with that load no problem but, safety becomes a little bit of an issue. As far as inexpensive weight distribution I think the equalizer is one of the best out there. I just have a hard time with the noise that it seems to generate when driving through an RV park or backing into a site. Because of that and the ability to hit you up a little easier and definitely having a really nice smooth Towing experience we paid a lot more money for the pro Pride hitch. Plus it allows us to drop our tailgate without hitting the electric jack. You'll be pleasantly surprised with your truck's performance. Like I said just take it easy no rush

@@Foxboss9 Thanks for your reply. I'm not a rookie at towing. We just happen to be transitioning from boating to camping and I realize a travel trailer is a different animal. Wind, aerodynamics and tongue weight make it a bear vs a boat. I'm a cruise control 65 type of guy. The trailer will probably be around 11k loaded and have a tongue weight around 1500 which is close to max tongue weight. Obviously weight distribution will help the tongue weight out and I have 3074 lbs of total payload so I think I'm gonna be right on the edge of being maxed out but still plenty safe once the wife and two young kids are in the truck. I'd figure for 6-8 mpg towing which I'd be fine with.

Around town was no problem but on the highway at 65-70 it struggled to stay in 5th. These strikers are very wide and tall. I suppose if you don’t worry about fuel mileage it’s ok. The chassis handled it fine using a 14k weight distribution hitch. Of course I didn’t even have the 2 k worth of toys and stuff in it yet. Going to load it up and try it again. The trailer should be 10k fully loaded. Empty it’s 7900

I put it in drive and just turn on the tow haul mode. A lot of trucks have the choice of either drive or Overdrive and if the truck is switching in and out of a gear from drive to overdrive and back to drive and then to overdrive again at that point you need to take it out of overdrive cuz that will cause some damage but on these trucks with that little weight I can not only just put it in drive but I can also just set the cruise control and they'll do just fine.

We have this 6.2L gas with 6 speed transmission and love it towing our 6400 lb 1964 vintage Airstream. Our GA to CO RT in May/June of 2020 we used Tow/Haul in Drive and if the tranny kept switching between 5th & 6th gears, like the drive between middle GA and Atlanta, we just hit the “-“ on the transmission stalk to only use the first five gears. In N. GA we often hit the “-“ button again to drop off 5th gear and use the first 4 gears. This process reduces a lot of downshifting and upshifting. Easy to transition back to 5th and/or 6th gear by hitting the “+” on the transmission stalk! Love this setup! Out West we might have stayed in 3rd or 4th gear climbing Monarch Pass and Lizard Head Pass to keep the RPM’s under our comfort zone of 4,000 RPM’s! We might have kept the 2009 F150 with the 4.6L six speed transmission if we could have accessed this feature. We had 1, 2, 3 and D available and could not turn off any of the top three gears. Thank you for the great video!

The 2011 doesn't drive as smooth as the newer models. The ride in this truck is very truck(ish). Lucky for me, that's all I've every known, so it's no big deal. @Foxboss9

I am sure that there's a way that I could. However, there's really no need as this trucks transmission is designed to run at a set temperature so much so that it has a thermostat built in for the transmission fluid. They say that these new transmissions run at a higher temperature then the old ones as they are designed to do that. This information hasn't been verified on my part this is just what I read in the super duty forums.

The tow haul function pretty much eliminates any questions as far as where to be transmission wise. In your older trucks like his 97, you'd turn off the overdrive because it would jump between 3rd and 4th creating heat. I have an 01 7.3 powerstroke. I turn off overdrive when I'm pulling hills but turn it back on in the flats.

Mr Novak’s comments on transmission is based on a Diesel engine. OUr experience with the 6.2L gas F250 six speed transmission requires us to manage the overdrive as needed to keep the RPM’s under our comfort level of 4000. Out west we have turned off 4th 5th and 6th gears to climb the high overpasses.

Since I did that I towed over the hill yesterday and it didn’t tow too bad. Tomorrow I’m gonna load it full of water and tape that to see what happens on the steep hill. Moto Z i just bought a 2020 brand new f250 and had that happen to me. It’s mostly an over exaggerated issue. I say this because the truck still goes straight when it happens. I think speed mostly effects it. I hit a expansion joint for a bridge and it did it all the way across the bridge. But I was doing 90mph when it happened. Drove over the same bridge doing 70mph and it didn’t happen.

@@Foxboss9 It was thankfully not me but my Neighbour and his wife... They were Off-road caravanning on the Oondatta Track in S.A, when he hit a mid side Eastern Grey Kangaroo on the front bumper more to the drivers side. It did stuff all damage but still deployed the airbags which then engaged his immobiliser (clearly a feature to stop runaways from car accidents). Any way, poor Bastard had to get that and his 28ft Kedron Off-road caravan towed to Coober Pedy at a cost of $8k! He an his wife then had to fly home as he was informed that the airbags had to come from overseas and would take 3 months. So he came back to W.A and eventually had the yank tank trucked back along with his caravan. All up the whole ordeal cost him $38k, after everything was tallied up. Needless to say he's since sold the thing and replaced it with a LandCruiser ute, the 4 door kind... Luckily he has plenty of cash, so he was more pissed off with the ruined trip they had been planning for years than anything else...

What was your trans temp?
@Foxboss9
@Foxboss9 4 жыл бұрын
It was right around 208 I think. It wasn't very hot out and these Transmissions run much warmer then the old e4od and aod and even the C6 of the past. My 97 F250 with the e4od was giving me a concern whenever I got around two hundred 210° degrees while Towing. These new trucks have thermostats in the transmission to keep the transmission a certain temperature and it's higher than what we were used to compared to the older Transmissions. I heard a lot of people say the 6-speed Transmissions run about 210 to 215 degrees while Towing and even when just driving around town. Things are definitely different than what I have learned on Old vehicles
@timjohnson2592
@timjohnson2592 3 жыл бұрын
With our similar F250, we rarely went over 200 degrees on the transmission and only when climbing a hill/mountain. I sometimes leave the trip computer on and watch the temperature change while climbing, descending and on flat stretches just to confirm we have an acceptable temperature. Not disputing your comments, just adding our experience with a little lighter trailer.

While towing, you should "delete" 6th gear. Transmission will be happier.
@Foxboss9

The only reason the lockout those upper gears as if it's shifting in and out constantly. It's not. Plus the transmission temperature is really never Rose above 220
@RawDawgRandy

@@Foxboss9 sounded like it was shifting a ton just in the video. I always remove 6th while towing and it rides in 5th no issues. Trans Temps stay around 195-204. If you're hitting 220 regularly, you can expect to get half the life out of that trans. Thats super high temps.

Just cuz it can doesn't mean you should. Especially since the highest tow rating that the 2000 Expedition had was roughly 8600 pounds. And I'm sure if you have passengers or cargo you are definitely over your GCVWR.

With my luck the one time I tow over my GCVWR something would go catastrophically wrong and I'd be left having to explain why the hell I was towing so much. For my own peace of mind I'll use the right tool for the job.
