I think the Civic Hatch is probably more fun to drive, but if you are keeping a car for a long time I think the Corolla's the way to go. There's a reason why Toyota who is obsessed with reliability sticks with naturally aspirated instead of turbocharging everything. Honda's new turbos are starting to have issues (e.g. CR-V) and no one knows how turbo engines will hold up in 10 years.

Agreed. Back then I hold Toyota & Honda nearly side by side when it comes to long term reliability, but the 1.5L turbo is likely a step too far for Honda & now reliability has deteriorated.

The original Acura RDX has a turbo. They're still kicking with turbo motors . My turbo Volvo 850s had no motor issues after the beating of a highschool kid. We beat the balls off turbo Saabs and Volvos...no motor issues. Now the eclipse/talon turbos sucked, as did the evos. The Rx7 was sketchy ,but the Supras werent.

@@sbklvr for more expensive cars which owners are willing to take care of (e.g. never miss an oil change) then they are fine. Toyotas especially true of Corollas are treated as beaters - they will be abused to the limit but will hold together decently.

I think Subaru has gotten better for quality and with Honda slipping on the 1.5 and also the Odyssey, that they now have fallen behind Subaru. Toyota though does very very well with reliability. It's nice Toyota is starting to make their cars less boring than before.

I've been a long time Honda Civic fan and owner, but this time I opted for a change. I've had my Corolla Hatch for 2 months and LOVE it! Honda's 1.5L turbo felt great but I was concerned about the high oil issues, carbon buildup and potential long-term problems. Sales staff were in denial about these issues... turned me off. Corolla is fun at higher revs. Interior is a bit noisy and smaller. Very happy with this car- so far.

Toyota has better quality than Honda. Ask yourself, how many times have you've seen an old Honda with oxidized paint versus an old Toyota? I've seen way more old Honda's with paint issues than Toyota. I do window tinting. Honda's glass is notorious among tinters for easily scratching with its soft glass, not Toyota.

I would pick this Corolla over the Civic hatchback because (1) the Civic is built in England, (2) the Civic does not have port injection (causing eventual clog-up behind the intake valves), (3) the Civic has a turbo, and (4) the Corolla's manual transmission works perfectly in conjunction with the adaptive cruise control (might need to get the XSE Corolla for this -- not sure).

Smart move from toyota, they took their reliability flagship and gave it character, but not anything extreme, so its still for the masses. Its more future proof this way. One of the biggest reasons to get the Corolla HB XSE over a Civic EX-T (now discontinued for 2019), Civic Sport sedan (new for 2019), or the Civic Si is the amenities. The Corolla HB XSE is basically the Civic Touring (since it's the top trim), but offered with a manual, which Honda isn't offering. While the Corolla HB isn't as fun or fast to drive, you're getting a lot more in luxuries/amenities (e.g., standard safety tech, blind-spot monitoring, leather seats, heating steering wheel, auto rev-matching, etc.) in exchange. If you consider all those extras a waste of money, then the Civic is the way to go. If you'd rather sacrifice performance for more comfort, than the Corolla HB is the way to go. Well, at least until Honda offers a Civic Touring w/ a manual transmission in the US, anyway. Either way, you can't go wrong with either car. And we should all be grateful Toyota even bothered to put a decent manual in the new Corolla HB. Having more options to pick from for manual-equipped cars is a good thing!
@skifree0
@skifree0 5 жыл бұрын
Ironically the situation is completely reversed in canada. The XSE doesn't come with a manual up here, so you are stuck with the CVT if you want everything. And then on top of that, The Canadian Si is based on the touring spec.

You guys said very unique a few times D: Technically, unique is a boolean or "absolute" adjective, and cannot be assigned different levels (very, slightly, somewhat). You guys are amazing by the way, I just had to mention it.

I thought the same thing to. But looking on the canadian website, the SE Upgrade is very similar to the US XSE trim level (manaul versions). Seems like the on the Canadian version u just don't get the cloth/leather(ette?) combo and don't get satellite radio. The US version doesn't get heated steering wheel.

When you mentioned the keyless entry opening the passenger door, I think that's probably a setting you can configure. I just bought a WRX and my wife kept getting stuck outside just like you guys said until I found out you can change unlock settings in the infotainment! I don't know if that applies to more cars but I would assume it does. I think most cars usually default to only unlocking the driver door for safety purposes. Awesome video as always!

Here's an interesting thing: the Civic and Corolla don't actually compete directly (except for the feature lacking base model Civic). The price point of a mid-level Civic (e.g. the one with a Turbo) is actually about the same as a Camry SE. People go with Corollas because they're usually about $5000 cheaper, and ironically with more features at that price point.

You guy really need to see if you can get the 2019 VW Mk7 Jetta with the 6 speed like my US spec S trim does. I am old AF, almost 52, and thank goodness my mother insisted on teaching me manual on her 1981 Mazda RX7 when I was 16 so I have been doing this awhile. This 6 speed is so easy to drive I would rank it near the top for a good car to learn manual on. Very forgiving and with this new high torque 1.4L turbo four it makes basic driving a breeze with the 184 ft/lbs hitting at 1800 RPMs. Plus fun fact it weighs less than 100 pounds more than a BRZ / 86 and has way more torque, I can keep up with them till about 3rd gear or so depending on driver. Plus I like the new looks for the four door sedan thing, very nice. Love the channel, keep up the awesomeness!

As a viewer, I like the 911 tests, I love that car and would love to own a manual version, however, I cannot afford it. It's magical to come after that test and see a review of a car that I am going to see on the streets, I love that. It's great that it has a manual. The outside looks are very good. I have an STI, so probably the audio system is better in the Corolla. It is good that the car is different than the Civic in terms of size. Not everybody cares for having a car that brings grown-ups in the back and those usually buy an SUV no matter what. Many times smaller improves the driving experience because the car feels lighter. I would never pay for satellite radio. To me, radio is disappearing in its original form and I do listen to the radio sometimes, but on KZbin channels, so all I care for is for is that the car connects well to the phone. Well done Toyota the car looks revived and it looks that brings a couple of features that make on the driving experience better. I would buy it for my daughter and teach if she were old enough to drive so that she learns to drive a manual and enjoys it. We would care about the looks and she would tell me that this one looks better than the Civic.

You guys are just awesome! Fun & interesting to watch. Great info given & you guys collaborated so well! Before, the new looks of the Corolla do surprised me. But a good car is just not about looks. After watching your review, i have to agree that the Civic is better. But, if given a choice, i'll pick either the Elantra GT or Veloster N😉. The new Corolla do looks sportier, but unfortunately it does not drive like one. And hey, I love Canada! 😍

As always, another great video fellas. I checked this Corolla hatchback recently too when I was looking for a daily commuter. Here in the U.S. we actually get XSE trim in stick shift. However, it was too small for hatchback and it's not as much fun. So, I had to pass on that. Ending up getting a used 2007 MX-5 Miata in stick shift with super low miles from the original owner. Small little convertible car with lots of fun to drive.
