As a Canadian Military member I can probably say without a doubt the FRH’s are issued separately for cost reduction on the rations themselves. We don’t use the FRHs very often especially in training situations. We use a Coleman stove with a pressure cooker, your able to heat your entire sections meals or at least a group of peoples rations all at once. That is at least why I believe we still issue them separately.

Not gonna lie, I’m not military, but I ran into a military guy emptying his bag looking for something in a gym changing room, and one of the things he pulled out was a mini stove and pot. I’m pretty sure our Soldiers are more than ready for making MREs without FRHs…

@@ianbuitenga3133 11 years in and I’d say at least 75% of the time the general directive is to use the stoves maybe if your combat arms it’s different but as a veh tech we generally just have the heaters in our trucks in case we’re out doing repairs around meal times and we’re gonna be awhile.

Steve, a friend of mine from the Canadian military said to “allow the Reese’s sticks to melt, then Crush them up, squeeze the crunchy mushy contents into the tortilla, then fold... then cook it like a mountain pie over the fire using spare aluminum foil or the pan from your mess kit. Your left with a homemade chocolate peanuts butter MRE crumble cake” he states it’s heaven after a long heavy ruck! Another good one is mixing the vanilla drink mix, pain hamburger (torn into chunks) and the apple slices desert. If your lucky enough too have a heat source warm it up and you've got apple bread puddin for when your cold and sad in the dirt ;)

CANFOR guy here: The reason we generally don't have or let us be real don't use the FRHs is we have a Colman stove with either a pressure cooker or pot of water when we have these. And if you're on patrol in the cold? You shove them in your jacket and they get warm on their own.

@@TheInsomniaddict ....some companies have made replica outer cardboard/paper packaging. Actually putting food into cans requires an extensive financial investment liability wise. The closest you can come are Spam1/2 size cans (tear the label off )and Underwood small round cans of chicken, ham or beef spread. Both type of cans have pull tabs but can be opened with a p38 opener. The crackers are still made by Nabisco but are packaged in plastic wrap, not cellophane. Instant coffee is available in packets. Lemon or orange drink is available in packets. Similar candies and gum are still made, packaging differs 'though. TP and matches can be easily self replicated.

Its like a skill or ability. I can do it too in a very limited capacity. It helps if you eat diff kinds of foods and know how to cook/prepare a lot of those diff kinds of foods too. The smell and taste you'd be able to differentiate since you know the actual ingredients in making diff kinds of food.. I mean, there isn't really that many common spices and flavours in most of the world's foods.

Im in the Canadian military and this is probably one of my favorite imp. Youre right about having the heater bags, they should of incorporate them with the imps but im guessing its a contract issue with two different companies. Sometimes you get issued old dryed out bags that dont heat up properly so youre stuck with eating your imp cold. I always eats my pb&j first while waiting for my main meal to warm up. The dates square is a gamble because they usually gives you the shits so depending where you are it can sucks lol. Most of our IMPs are very very good now, I've tried quite a bit from different countries and they are hard to beat. I like alot if the American ones and its cool that they have skittles and cheese wheezes sometimes. Norway were really good to, you get a 24 hours package and you eat whatever whenever. Cheers

The reason we have the IMP separate from the heating bag is for winter when we heat the meals in the pressure cooker in the 10 man tents. We would waste the heating bags

@@sharmoutha never thought of that you're right, I probably ate half my ration out of a pressure cooker which is almost quicker than a heater bag anyways and not chance of a dud which Ive seem to get alot the past two exercise ive been on. I just remember we traded a whole pallet of cdn imps for a pallet of american MREs once and thought having everything together was kinda handy. Definitely like that they had skittles and cheese wheeze spreads sometimes but not all their meals had coffee in them. 🤓

Was just in Canada for military training and they were super eager to trade their cases of IMP’s for our cases of MRE’s. Pizza pasta was my favorite so far, but I didn’t get to try much of the others outside of that one case as they gave us a bunch of the same case. Overall was super impressed and it made the training experience a bit better knowing I didn’t have to deal with the same old MRE’s we are used to. Side note, just about every Canadian we met was extremely welcoming and sociable; definitely enjoyed meeting some of our friends in the north!

Noticed how weird it was that it was called “Reese Sticks” and not “Reese’s Sticks” and went searching. Turns out Hershey’s ditched the name ReeseSticks for the more conventional Reese’s naming convention of “Reese’s Sticks” in 2009, since most people pronounced it that way anyways. Wonder if that means the one in the MRE is 12+ years old or if it just uses left over old stock packaging.

Based on my digging I believe that in Canada they are still named “Reese Sticks” I can order Reese Sticks from Canada that still are dubbed Reese as opposed to Reese’s. Must just be a Candy thing since ofc it’s a Canadian ration!

When I was in the service, we ignored the "tear here" tabs, and cut the edge off length wise -a more shallow opening and easier to eat straight from the pouch.

A big part of the reason the FRH isn't included is really just cost. A lot of CAF exercises these days have plenty of opportunity to just boil a bunch together so it makes sense to only give FRHs to units that actually need them. Less waste too.

@@lawrencedavid9728 fun fact, can't say much about the LAVs, but the old cougars had an air filter for smoke, gas, etc. On training ex's they wouldn't put the filters in to stop them wearing out, but the filterless air box still kept cool from the air flow and was the perfect size to fit a case of beer

Minor point of correction: a "double double" refers to double the standard amount of cream and *sugar*, not the strength of the coffee itself. In case any international viewers come here and get a too sweet surprise, that's what it means.

Theoretical of course, since you don't have them on-hand, but I would really be interested in hearing your thoughts on which countries do certain things well, which countries surprised you, etc.

Hi Steve, I wanted to clarify what a Canadian Double-Double is. Its a coffee with 2 cream and 2 sugar (Hence double-double). I believe the term originated from our Tim Hortons donut shop chain. =D The more you know!

I was in in the 70s and 80's at the time we transitioned from canned to magic pantry. The tinned bacon was sorely missed, but the weight reduction was substantial. The best thing in the new kits was the chocolate pudding; add water to the powder in the zip lock bag (looked exactly the same as the one in the vid) and shake. It was awesome! It must have been carcinogenic or something, because they went away

We never had FRHs to make bombs with, but we *did* throw packets of creamer from IMPs into the campfire... because they'd explode quite satisfyingly. We were of course reprimanded for doing so. And continued doing it anyway.

omg. this takes me back. I was never in the Canadian army, but I did do Air cadets throughout my youth. we went on 5 weekend survival training exercises (deep bush, 3 summer, 2 winter) and these were always what we had to eat for meals. everyone got their own pack, but they took out all the main meals, and cooked them together in a big stock pot (Still in the packaging, obviously). so many good memories :D

I had Canadian rations when I was in Air Cadets back in the early 2010’s and I gotta say that the rectangular bread they had is, to this day, the best processed bread I’ve ever had. It’s too bad they moved away from it.

I stayed at Trenton AFB last year during the beginning of covid. We stayed in a civilian hotel on the base and were being served meals 3 times a day as well as having some goods come in. We were provided with really awful maxwell house packets and it was the worst... however, a couple of boxes of nescafe 3 in 1 made it and we were more than happy
