As a recently retired Canadian Army veteran, I spent a lot of time existing on Canadian IMPs in all sorts of weather and environments, including extreme wet. I don't recall ever losing an unopened package to spoilage by water or dust. If I recall the meal packages have a weatherproof lining sandwiched with the paper. I'm glad they changed the colour of the packaging to something a little more subtle than the older white. The white was an extraordinary tactical nuisance. We would keep cases of the rations in our vehicles, but if on patrol we always broke them down and got rid of unnecessary packaging. Some of the components may have had cardboard boxes, but inside everything was waterproof or substantially water resistant, save perhaps the paper towel and the package of matches.

The sliced apples are legit not that bad, I’d take em over the sliced pears and trail mix (except for banana peanut butter trail mix which is a godsend) any day. The thing you might not guess is that sometimes, depending on the exercise you do not get that water-activated heater in your IMPs so you have to put them in boiling water, a process you often DO NOT have the time for. A lot of times the main meal becomes the most disappointing part of the IMP because you have to eat it cold, if you eat it at all that is.

I got into MRE’s in the late 1980’s when my best friend in High School joined the Army on the ROTC track, I, myself, tried to get into, first, the National Guard and then the active duty Navy. Neither would touch me because I was born with only one kidney. So much for my military career. I loved the 80’s MRE’s. I lived for the Five Fingers of Death and the vanilla pound cakes. As the years have progressed, I have had other friends who would bring me entire cases after their two-week stints in the summer or I’ve managed to wheedle single packs out of National Guard units for which I have cooked meals (smaller National Guard units are not allowed to make their own breakfasts and lunches unless they have their own 92G’s). I’ve enjoyed them all (well, maybe except for Fettuccine Alfredo and Mac & Cheese, but mostly because I don’t like them anyway). I love seeing Steve sample the foreign MRE’s because I’ve never had one of those. The ones I want to try most are the Australian and Russian 24 hour packs.

Putting the sports drink into the fruit bag is a technique we do at work frequently. It saves the time of having to open up your beverage bag and add water. It also adds a nice zing to whatever fruit you're having. If you're eating a breakfast rat, I also typically add the crunchy cereal or oatmeal to the concoction and eat it with a spoon.
