One tip on DEF, it does expire. You need to check that DEF, as once it goes bad it can become a major problem. Having a 2500 HD and traveling a lot I became aware quickly on expired DEF. It will cause major problems and codes. Being urea based it expires pretty quickly.

Same here. Considering trading it in on basically exactly what's shown in this video. Went to the dealership and test drove the diesel.. it was a noticeable difference in power and acceleration. My 2012 sport with the larger tires has always struggled to accelerate and maintain speed, but that diesel sure didn't. Noise wasn't even a factor - if anything it was quieter outside than my 2012, and inside was far quieter (even without the headliner, which my 2012 also lacks).

@@CoffeeBeanFiend - Had a number of issues over the years. Heater failed on the driver side twice over and needed replacing (which is apparently a known issue with this year, manufacturing defect of some sort). Had a random multiple cylinder misfire code pop up that led to the dealership tearing the engine apart, which was covered by the warranty thankfully. It complained for years about anything that wasn't premium fuel, kicking a code for a fuel/O2 balance issue. An O2 sensor was apparently the issue.. but it still does it from time to time even after replacing that.. so, yeah. Who knows. The muffler literally rusted away to nothing after only 5 years and needed replacing.. that was a first. Oh, and it pops out of first gear (it's a manual) about 0.5 to 1% of the time when starting out. Apparently that's just a Jeep thing X_X It's the most troublesome vehicle I've ever owned if I'm being honest (the other two both being Honda Civics that I never had to do a damn thing to), but I still prefer it. Certainly hoping that a new one won't have all the same issues all over again.

The angle of the head rest is actually a regulation as I understand, but I think that if enough people complain about it they will make it so you can adjust it. I had to bend the rods back on mine (they are hollow and easy to bend) because it was also pushing my head too far forward. I am glad I am not the only one complaining about that.

I’ve had my eco diesel for about three months now, and I have it on BFG KM3 39’s with stock 3.73:1 gear ratio. Definitely not lacking in power at all. I’m averaging about 19.5 around town, 22.5 highway. I’m considering a re gear to 4.27 or 4.56, just to bring my fuel economy back up. I LOVE this engine. IMO, it’s the best platform jeep has ever put in a wrangler.

Hows the dana 44 handling the big tires? I want to go bigger but worry.
@generalsoul1
@generalsoul1 2 жыл бұрын
@@Casey250 To my knowledge the biggest tire they recommend on Dana 44 axles is 36.5. The weight of a 35” tire is roughly 60lbs. 40” tire would be roughly 95lbs depending on the tire. So that’s 380lbs versus 240lbs. So running 40s on a Dana 44 with no regear seems pretty risky. Even with the regear it’s risky because they don’t recommend over a 36.5 for it. Which really means it’s safest to run 35’s with Dana 44 axles. Should upgrade to Dana 60’s to run 40s to be safe. UNLESS the jeep doesn’t go off-road. AT ALL. Then running 40’s would be fine without upgrading axles.

one thing to note Casey is that DEF fluid many times have been expired yet still sit in stock, there is a way to check on the box or bottle. One thing i did was go to a commercial vehicle gas station for semi trucks and what not, and they have DEF fluid pumps just the same as a gas pump, and that fluid is constantly being used and cycled through, so you know it will never be expired.

Casey, I have had my '21 JLURD for two months and I've got 4,500 miles on it. I agree 100% with your review. One important thing I've noticed is that when off-road with my 3.0L ecoDiesel, I can climb hills in 4Hi that I used to use 4Lo in my TJ with a 4.0L engine. The other thing I've noticed is how many different systems are controlled by the computer, and sometimes when I get a warning or error message I have to shut down and restart in order to clear the error. It reminds of rebooting my computer when Windows-95 first came out.

EGR was a nightmare on these engines when they came out in 2014, and emissions will continue to be the most problematic, costly issue you will deal with, especially out of warranty. EGR still causes an inordinate amount of soot to build in the intake, causing premature engine failure. Without the EGR, the engine is a solid, long lasting unit in its current form.

There's only a couple of downsides: 1.) If you run low on the trail 99% of Jeeps are gas, and some places don't sell diesel 2.) If you need to run the engine all night for a/c or heat to sleep, this slightly louder engine will upset some people wheras the gas engine is quite a bit quieter. But oh that diesel torque off road must be amazing. Bring on the electric Jeep that charges in 5 minutes and goes 1000 miles... :)

Modern "headrests" are angled like that to prevent serious neck and spinal cord injuries in a crash. It forces your head down and against your chest, preventing hyperflexation and likely internal decapitation. This position can also naturally limit hyperrotion as the shoulders limit the movement of the skull laterally. In addition, somewhat like a HANS device it transfers some of the deceleration energy to your shoulders and torso, which are more capable of handling them than your head and neck. So no, it's not at all safe, but that's your choice of course.
@Casey250

Perhaps but I think for tall torso people it is too low. When I look at my wife's head with hers adjusted versus mine they aren't even close. My is hitting the top tip of it. My other vehicles aren't even close to what this is for pushing my head forward.

It seems like having marker/ turn signal lights on the fenders is asking for trouble. I've been on the trail and ripped a fender of on my JKU. It's easily reattached with some new plastic rivets. No broken wires or lights to deal with. Let's face it- trails get slick and it's easy to catch a tree with a fender.

The 4ev is what I’m waiting on. 25 miles all electric and it charges with kinetic energy like a Prius. That means you would use hardly any gas off road which is where most Jeep’s kills gas mileage.

Experienced PHEV and BEV owner here. In real world conditions, not testing lab, a 25 mile PHEV isn't worth the trouble as the real range will be 1/2 to 3/4 of the sticker. And once the charge is used up, you are hauling hundreds of lbs of dead weight which pretty much cancels out the hybrid efficiencies. I'd rather have the diesel.

What is the benefit to having the eco diesel ? Given the $4500 extra engine cost, extra def cost, ass9 oil change cost ! Fuel mileage will never offset these extra costs. Excellent review though. I have the same problems with power ports, that door tether and hunchback head rest. I’m 5’-11”.

The thought of diesel is great for mpgs especially if adding larger tires, lift, etc... But what most people don't know is that the Ecodiesels are sensitive and the smog equipment doesn't help. I had a 2017 Ecodiesel Ram and I learned a lot from it. I wouldn't suggest an Eco if you do constant short trips and don't get on the highway often to let it run for a descent amount of miles. Short trips won't allow you to complete a regen which burns the soot, so it has a higher chance of clogging your dpf. There's a lot to learn about how to drive and treat the Ecodiesel. I just purchased a Gladiator with he 3.6 for simplicity and peace of mind. I don't have to worry about the potential damage I'm doing to the engine because I dropped my children off at school a few miles away and came right back home and didn't take a long drive during the week for the smog system to properly regen.

I've got 7000 miles on my Rubicon Eco Diesel. Zero issues so far. I've have every generation of Jeep since 1997. The diesel is just effortless. The only thing that may be better is electric but I'll have wait to see how this hybrid setup pans out. That's a lot of new tech for a company like FCA to introduce, I'd probably wait a year. The diesel is worth it for the sound alone but when you factor that you don't have to re-gear and your range is still great...

With a $4500 upcharge for diesel, the $250 oil changes and the hassle and expense of the diesel exhaust fluid, I don't see the savings over gas. And with only a 21-mile range (even less as the battery ages), I don't see the point of the 4xE. And yes, I can use hybrid mode to extend that range but then what's the point of going electric if you're still using the gas engine? I may as well pay less and go with the traditional model.

I would tell anyone that has never owned a diesel, that if your looking for a fast quick off the line start then don't buy a diesel. Yes you can buy mods that will give you a faster off the line starts, but its still not going to be as fast as it would be if you had a gass engine. I myself don't always look for the get up and go, as they say. I look for how it craws and climes. I have a 2500 dodge truck and I to run the def in it as well and yes changing the oil is more expensive the a regular diesel. But I wouldn't trade it in for any gas engine. Thanks for your review on your jeep.
@deahelkcunklaer2180
@deahelkcunklaer2180 3 жыл бұрын
You've got it backwards. Diesel is faster off the line due to the earlier and greater torque. As the revs climb the power drops off. That's why diesel is so well suited to heavier vehicles.
@jk_wrangler13
@jk_wrangler13 3 жыл бұрын
@@deahelkcunklaer2180 sorry but that's not true. I have a 2500 and unless I put some after market up grades on it l, it's not faster off the line. My truck don't pick speed until the turbo kicks in after building boost. Diesels are better known for their low torc and pulling power not to mention their climbing power.

Don't buy the def in jugs. HUGE waste of money- like 2 - 3 times what you'd pay at a def pump. Yes, def pumps aren't everywhere but you will find them at most all major travel centers/truck stops. Just go to the big rig fuel lane and get fresh def at the pump. Also - use Lucas Diesel DEEP CLEAN with every 3 or 4 fill-ups. Especially if you are planning a road trip. This helps keep the DEF filters, sensors and the doser clean. What is a doser? This squirts def into the def filter when the engine is under full load and temp.

I hate it when people do “long term”reviews and it’s only been a few months! And only 12,000 kilometers (7,456 miles). THAT IS NOT A LONG TERM REVIEW!!! I get it, it’s longer than the day or two that car review channels usually have to review new cars, but let’s face it, a year or two or anything less than 100,000 miles still puts it in the new vehicle category to me. Most new vehicles won’t start showing their true colors of reliability, dependability etc, until after 100,000 miles (160,934 kilometers). That’s typically when issues will start to rise if any are going to. Videos like this one are just a way for KZbinrs to create more content and hopefully continue to boost the algorithm as well as another vid to promote their merch. A shameless plug if you will.
