When I was considering buying my next bike I looked at the street triple 675 and the MT-09 because they're relatively the same price on the used markets right now, one of the biggest gripes I had with the MT-09 is the front end felt floaty and the higher gearing was super lazy. When I popped on the 675 I immediately felt a sharper steering feel and much more confident on the bike as I knew exactly where the wheel was and on the MT-09 I didn't get that feeling. The 675 walks away in 6th gear from this bike at 70mph when both are pinned, it's like Yamaha put a gas mileage gear for 6th and it's super odd for a naked sport bike to have a gear for better gas mileage. It reminded me of a C6 Z06 corvette trans where 5th gets you 20 mpg and 6th gets you 35 lol.

675 is a great bike. Ergonomics and controls are faultless, and handling is solid. Daytona is timeless as well. MT-09 is a basic motorcycle with good reliability, that also happens to be a great wheelie trainer.

@Lonzo Go out and find a street triple get on the highway hold 70 mph and have both gas it, the street triple walks away. It's not about power it's about gearing, the MT-09 has a super long 6th gear for utterly no reason.

Good review! Had one, sold it last year after 16000km and got myself 2019 mt10 (21000km so far). Both great bikes, but the mt10 just fits me perfectly - a lot better for longer rides, more power, stiffer suspension, better ergonomics etc. Oh and sweet music!

Hubert Rode an MT10 for the first time in November at the Long Beach show. Great all around bike and best sounding motor on the market. If I was in the market for a 1000cc standard it would be a toss-up between the MT10, FTR 1200, and 1290 SuperDuke. Tuono 1100 felt unfinished and boggy.
@hubert1142
@hubert1142 4 жыл бұрын
@@FancyAnimal all great bikes. I was deciding between Tuono and MT10. Tuono is a bit more sporty(less comfy), a bit more expensive to maintain, the front mask looks a slightly dated, lacks LEDs, fuel gauge and there's reliability concerns - probably not entirely justified, but I still prefer peace of mind Yamaha provides. I haven't ridden the Indian(not many dealers in EU), Duke would probably be my second choice.

I love my MT09 but I had to adjust the suspension to hard tension because I could not take turns quickly due to the abortion of the bumps. I also want a steering damper because it will become bouncy above 85 mph. I learned if you pull down harder on the handles its a little better. And after a long ride and winds @ 10mph or above you are tired so a front cowl or windscreen is recommended if you plan to tour the bike. Otherwise he touched over everything and I couldn't agree more. This is a Fantastic bike! I moved from a ninja 300 to a 2018 MT09.

Do u think it’s would be bad for me to buy the mt09 ? And another question please does it feel the same on the seat is it low like the mt03 ? Thanks 🙏

I have owned an MT-09 for 3 years by now, the last 2,5 years a remapped SP-version. I will definitely NOT recommend the MT-09 as a beginner's bike, it's simply too powerful. As a beginner it is more important that you feel confident so that you can and will learn a lot (do courses, do practice a lot in closed areas/parking lots). Therefore I will not recommend anything bigger than the MT-07, and actually it could well be that e.g. the KTM 390 Duke would be a better choice. But most important for your purchase is that you have good sitting position on the bike so that you can feel confident when driving. Best of luck in your choice making, enjoy and ride safe.

I bought a 2020 MT-09 3 moths ago.My last bike was a 14' gsxr600. I love the MT-09. It is slower than the 600. It tops out at 132 but you can do that at 9k rpm's in 5th. So it definitely has more in it. The lack of high speed is made up for by the low end grunt. Which every day driving is so much more fun. I always felt tense on the 600 where the MT09 is relaxing and enjoyable.
@FancyAnimal
@FancyAnimal 4 жыл бұрын
Adam Knight we went through about 20 years where people overlooked standard motorcycles in favor of sport bikes. Now we’re back to standards for their practicality. As for your 600 being faster, on tight twisty canyon roads those 600s don’t stand a chance against the mt09. Cheers!

ECU flash fixes the speed limiter. Also, ECU limits throttle application in most gears. You can twist the grip to the stops and the computer is only going to do what the throttle map percentages say it can do.

At 65mph in 6th gear the MT09 sits in the inflection / minima of the dip in the torque curve. Same with 5th gear since the reductions are so close. The MT07 on the other hand sits just ahead of the dip in its torque curve at 65 with a shorter reduction which is why its 6th gear passing is better with 40 less peak hp. The FTR1200, MT10, KTM 890, Monster 821, RS900, Indian Scout, Scout 60, and 675 Street Triple to name a few are bikes I’ve ridden that are much better highway bikes with similar power save for the MT10. They’re all more money which is why the MT09 is a good value. For me, if I’m a Yamaha loyalist I’d rather pay a bit more for the MT10 and have a much more capable bike that’s just as wheelie happy:
@DearMajesty
@DearMajesty 4 жыл бұрын
@@FancyAnimal Couldn't agree any more! Personally, I'd much rather have an XSR700 as they are exceptionally wheelie happy and handle really well. For some reason feels better than the MT07 to me. Suspension is also actually quite decent for 8/10th's riding and general hooligan riding

I have the 2014 which had horribly twitchy throttle with the old “Standard/A/B mode” mapping. I have read many reviews which lead me to believe Yamaha went too far with the traction control and mapping to tame the throttle response on subsequent models. The ECU was reflashed on mine by the dealer to the 2015 spec, then I added a K&N air filter, Akrapović and Power Commander. There is no way you could ride my bike and claim that the motor is “sleepy” at freeway speed.

@@FancyAnimal No. You started out in TRC-1, but you somehow changed it to TRC-2 during your ride. It shows on the screen. That actually explains the lack of acceleration you experienced, since in TRC-1 the MT-09 is way more dynamic and direct feeling than in TRC-2. How do I know is? I have had two MT-09's during the past 3 years, doing 25.000 km in total.
@FancyAnimal
@FancyAnimal 4 жыл бұрын
Mr. Hansen. The highway pulls were in A-1. The bike suffers from tall gearing combined with a saddle in the torque curve at highway speeds which neuters top gear passing. It isn’t a 1290 SuperDuke. It’s a 115 ish hp budget cruiser that rides like a budget cruiser. There’s a lot of value in the bike, but it’s not a great handling powerhouse.
@mr.hansen5195
@mr.hansen5195 4 жыл бұрын
@@FancyAnimal Well, maybe parts of your highway tour was in TRC-1, but definitely not all off it. It shows in the video. I think you owe yourself - and your followers in here - a retour 😉 BTW. I most centainly hope that the Duke 1290 is faster, at that much higher price point it ought to be.
@mr.hansen5195
@mr.hansen5195 4 жыл бұрын
@@FancyAnimal I just double checked your video: At least from 03:21 in the video you are driving in TRC-2. This is were you make the first stop in traffic, i.e. before you go into the highway. So the whole highway section you are driving in A2, not A1. A2 is significantly lagging in throttle response compared to A1, which, at least to some extend, explains your experience, that neither I, nor the other MT-09 owners in here could understand. But yes, you are right about the tilting of the seat, it takes some time getting used to before you find your optimum driver position. To me it works to bend the arms a bit and relax in the shoulders and arms, and bend a little forward with a strait upper body (I am 6'2"). As for the tiny LCD, well, to me it doesn't matter. You quickly learn to read the rpm's from the bar size. And the speed is printed in large figures, so that's okay. All the other stuff is for me uninteresting, when driving. I prefer to concentrate on the road and the traffic 😉

I've had my MT-09 for 3 years now. Unless Yamaha have drastically changed something with the 2020 Model, i'm going to have to disagree with you on the pulling power front. I can't think of a time that i've had any issues passing in any gear - if you're at the appropriate speed for the gear that is.

The MT07 has equivalent top gear acceleration at 60mph than an MT09....watch the review. Has nothing to do with my adaptation to acceleration. Has everything to do with the MT09 having a tall 5th and 6th gear for emissions which impedes forward motion in the highway. BTW, if a 400 feels super quick you might want an upgrade from your Renault Twingo 🤣

Engine brake is strong its either you love it or hate it. Most irritati g bout the bike water goes at the back of my jacket coz tail is too short No fix! Bad for touring and low clearance prone to crack the crankcase

Spoken like someone who’s too new to riding to find themselves in the midst of lane switching only to find a truck barreling down at 80mph who just warped into your lane. No time to correct or downshift. It’s WOT in 6th or die. On an MT09 you’re bug splat. One of the many reasons top gear acceleration is an essential metric for any credible road test publication. It’s a good bike with bad top gear acceleration. No bike is perfect.

People riding in 6th in low rpm expecting this bike to pull on the highway, no, no no no, rpm need to be high boy, its hp range. Torque won't help you on the highway, of course you need to be in the HP range. You can can keep up with and match a 600 on the highway with this. Stock youre getting 115hp, thats 600 territory, and its pretty light. Bike is definitely made for mountain riding or city riding though. Had a liter bike, sold it for an mt09. But yeah that g*d d*mn seat had to go, got me a corbin. Front suspension I see no need to upgrade (2017+ model) the back is a bit soft, but I didnt set it to be 100% stiff either. Wobble is there, especially since it power wheelies in first and second. 45mph+ wobble goes away for me. Front lights are good, people can stfu about the headlight sucking, its fine. Its a hypernaked streetfighter ofc there's wind dont be dumb. Inline triple is deeper than an inline 4 and higher than a inline twin. Stock exhaust sounds good, audible but not quite as loud as most may want it. Its loud enough for you to not hurt your ears, clearly hear the motor when getting on it, and you can still hear the gearbox whir when youre riding, almost like a turbo. I will be going for aftermarket but if you just want the sound to be good, its very fair when getting on it, not much there just cruising though.

Top gear acceleration is a standard metric to determine a bike’s rate of response for emergency situations where the time to downshift is not possible. Unlike other bikes in its class, the MT09 engine output sits at the minima of the saddle in the power curve at 65mph in a top gear with a very tall reduction. Bad. The 5th gear reduction is so close to 6th, that downshifting into 4th is required to move past the torque inflection for any passing power. This is just bad engineering where emissions were controlled via the transmission rather than by reworking the engine. As for HP vs torque, they are not separable quantities. Power is mechanical work (force x distance) per unit time, with Torque being rotational work. Therefore HP is the amount of torque applied per unit time, calculated by applying the definite integral as a functional of time (rpm). If a Torque equal to 33,000 ft x lb is applied over 1 minute, you have 1 HP. All engines have increasing torque or rpm with increasing rpm, so therefore power is always increasing. A Properly designed powertrain will have good torque with a short enough reduction to provide ample power (quick passing)....MT09 does not.

Great job, thank you. This is the SP model. The display is horrible to me, it seems bought by Aliexpress, in this regard Yamaha has not learned anything from the display of BMW, Honda Africa Twin or KTM. Although there will be people who like it !!! Naming the driving modes 1, 2 and 3 is a bit childish, in addition to missing at least one more mode. Nor do I like anything (in the normal model) the brake fluid deposit on the handlebar since it could be integrated as in this SP model. Looking at the handlebar with that deposit, it seems that a cup holder for the soda can or coffee is missing on the other side of the handlebar. These are the things I like the least, otherwise it seems like a great bike.

The Z900 is a dull donkey to drive: predictable like hell, but without any heart and soul. The MT-09 in that camparison is a full-blooded stallion, that needs your attention - if you provide that attention, it gives you remarkably funny and wholeheartedly driver experiences. It's such a thrill on the MT-09!

@@gbner9991 Of course I have tried the Z900, otherwise I would not have written like I did: This was my experience. The Z900 is a very predictable machine with a slick throttle response, way more slicker than the MT-09. But also quite dull to ride, sorry, which was the reason for I didn't purchase the Z900 instead - but this is of course my subjective opinion. It's correct that that the suspension on the MT-09 used to be bad, but it changed to the better in the 2017-version, and even further in 2018 inplementing the Öhlin suspension on the SP-version (which I have). Also, the rider position felt way too low (at 6'2"), so the Z900 was not really an option to me.
