Quick update on the A91 Edition Supra and talking about the 2021 and up Oil Consumption Issues. The 2021 Toyota Supra has been plagued with oil consumption issues and in this video I go over what to do if you have these issues and also share advice given to me by other owners who dealt with the issue and ultimately had Toyota buy back their Supra. This is a bad problem for the Supra, as it is a problem that Toyota is doing only an "alright" job at fixing.

I have a later production date A91 in Nocturnal. Bought brand new with 48 miles two months ago. I did the "proper" break in before throwing on a JB4, MST and AA downpipe. I had the dealership change the oil at 1200 miles. There was no oil loss then and neither now at 3100 miles. I've taken some road trips including TX2k from Louisiana. The car has over 20 data logged pulls and other spirited drives. Keeping my fingers crossed!

Just putting this out here also "BMW said oil consumption is normal on all engines, and consumption within specifications doesn't mean there's excessive engine wear. The company said some regular BMW motors can consume up to a quart every 750 miles, and M series performance engines can use up to 2.5 quarts per 1,000 miles under certain conditions"

This has been a bit of a heated debate. Because at the end of the day, should a car need 3-4 quarts of oil after less than 2K miles like some owners have experienced? Especially when Toyota is tearing the motors apart and actually finding issues internally and deciding the issue wasn't normal enough to warrant a completely new motor.

They can say all engines consume oil, but the engine in my 87 supra is from a 97 aristo (2jz). I can drive the crap out of it for 10,000 miles and it doesn't leak or burn a DROP of oil. Maybe I got lucky?

My son car just had this oil issue come up this week. He has an appointment this Saturday with the dealership to have them look at it. He bought a 2021 Supra brand new. Driving a 2021 leased M340 that has same engine variant as 2021 supra.. At 6500 miles the iDrive warned of low oil. It was 1qt low. Topped it off and have since had a oil change at around 9000 miles.. I currently have 11,500 miles and oil still full

I had a GT350 before and a Bullitt. The GT 350s are known for oil consumption issues. Mine was very small, did not need to add between changes. The Bullitt used about a quart between 3000 mile changes. And the harder you drove them the more they used. My Supra, I changed the oil at 1000 miles and it was at the high mark, about 1000 miles into the last change and its still full. It sucks you people having this issue, my point is its not isolated to Toyota Supras.

This is very good information for our Supra’s. My situation at the moment now is that I’m on the process of getting my 2022 CF Supra this week. Brand new and it’s coming from another state. I’m just waiting until it gets off the truck at the dealership. Hey Rob with this information all I can do is just hope and fingers crossed that my 2022 CF Supra doesn’t have oil consumption. I’ll let you know too how my Supra behaves when I pick it up and drive it for a few weeks…

Looking for some advice. My 21 has asked for oil at 1600, 2900 and 4100. The service just topped it off and send me my way telling me it was my sport use problem. They gave me a quart of oil 0w-16 to add for the next time it gives me an oil consumption problem. They didn't even provided me any type of documentation of their work at 4100. I'm starting to feel like they trying my patience now. Any advice on how to follow?

Yeah that’s complete BS. Call corporate and raise a hell storm and make sure they know which dealer. Then personally I’d raise issues with the dealer service themselves as that much oil consumption is ridiculous.

So I've got the same ride. A91 in refraction and was lucky enough to get it with the spoiler. I haven't had any oil checks come back with low oil and have put almost 2k miles on the car. I'm kind of curious how many other 2021 Supras have had the same issues you're mentioning. I'm definitely beyond the break-in period and haven't been in to change the oil, but it's on my list of things to do. Have you seen the papadakis tear down of the motor? I believe the head either doesn't use gaskets or had just a layer of silicone between the parts and I'm wondering if that's contributing as well. I can't remember exactly what it was, but I remember thinking to myself "how well then how does it's seal?". Additionally I wonder if that causes the need for a longer break in period? Just thoughts from a worried A91-er

Hey Rob, absolutely love the A91 never did care much for the launch edition this is way better let alone the incredible blue. That’s unfortunate about the oil consumption in the 3.0 21 supra my thought for you every time you have the oil changed at the dealer I would have them note that the oil consumption was normal a.k.a. didn’t use any oil between oil changes not handwritten but printed out right on the service sheet and that might even show up on a car fax so at least you’d have proof when you sold it in three or four years or how many years that your engine was unaffected just a thought have a great one👍

@@cjpp78ytube well of course the dealership is going to say that I think any well-designed engine should not need oil added to it in the stated miles between oil changes I understand that some engines especially high-performance ones May consume oil but more than a quart between oil changes I certainly consider that’s not normal. I’ll pretty much guarantee the 2022 variance of these engines the first thing they’ll say is that the oil consumption problem has been fixed but at the same time never really admitting that the engines before really had an issue. I’ve seen this dozens of times before I myself have a 91 MR2 180000 miles 30 years old I change the oil every 3000 miles end it might use a quarter quart that was 30 years ago the precision of engines today there should not be oil consumption problems especially brand new, five years old 60,000 miles driven hard a quart or so between changes acceptable but then again that really shouldn’t be......l

I literally just had this happen in the last couple of months for my 2021 3.0 Premium Supra with 12k miles. I've had it for 9 months and 4 times now I've had to add a qt. All I've done to it was put a Tomei exhaust on it and a VRSF catless DP and a BMS intake delete, that is it. I feel like this should be a recall or something?

Yes, i've had oil consumption issues as well but my testing determined that while the oil level was low, it still falls underneath the normal range. So instead of changing every 10k as recommended/advertised, it appears as if mine is needed every 6,500k miles and i'm ok with that... Iplan to upgrade to 2022 3.0 supra in about 6 months.

@@carloscarrasco9623 the 2.0 supra handles slightly better but not enough to really tell. I'm not an expert on cars but I noticed it. I have 3.0 (owned for at least a year) and it's definitely worth getting the 3.0 mainly because of how society will put pressure on you to be faster. The 2.0 is just not competitive enough for the cars on the road. As a small car, you need to have superior breaking and better torque to get away from the other drivers. It's a safety issue. Everyone is going to pick on you. Having the 2.0 put you at a disadvantage. You're more likely to get into a wreck from dealing with others on the road in a 2.0 than a 3.0. You have to be able to out perform your avg car or basic nice car on the road. Once u purchase your car. You will see what I'm talking about on the road. It's not as bad as when the supra was brand new so some of the excitement has died down but you still have these haters & ridiculous folk on the road. Get the 3.0!! if you can afford it.

Physical weight has nothing to.do with why a spoiler gets bolted down. Spoilers create weight aka down force ar speed. The bolts are to translate that down force to the chasis... I'm sure the stock spoilers don't make that much down force, but I would hate for that thing to rip off driving down the expressway or on track.

I keep sayin, the 2020 motor is the one to get. Toyota tore that motor down prior to approval. The 2021 came out of the new m340 and Z4 without toyotas teardown.

It is worth mentioning, the Z4M and M340 haven't had this issue in as great a capacity. Currently people are suspecting a bad batch and looking at production dates to see if something can be narrowed down.

I had the replacement done on my car. Will that fix the issue? Time will tell. Car runs fine so far. I have about 2k or so on the new engine. I was lucky enough to have a very knowledgeable tech. @@alexu3 it started around 2k if I'm correct but I added oil myself. Happened again around 3500 miles again added oil myself. It continued to happen. Around 8900 the dealership changed my oil and about 1400 miles later I received low oil notification. So this is when the dealership started tracking as they were concerned since I had returned previously for a top off. At this point it wasn't a national known issue but there was buzz about it within corporate. After about two or three more oil top offs that's when the dealership took my car for engine replacement. It was advised that I didn't drive it so they kept it until the new engine was installed which almost two months to receive

There really is no indication yet in regards to the motor offerings for 2022. If anything, keep the car stock until around 5-7K miles because that is when it is evident if you will have consumption issues or not and go from there.

There are countless people and data to support the position that BMW's have poor reliability overall. The Supra is essentially a BMW with a different shell and some chassis tweaks. Plenty of people can afford a Supra at $50K, but sales are sparse because of what it is (or isn't).

My 2021 with a build date of 03/20 is down 1/2 quart at 2,600miles.(4,000kms) I did the proper break in procedure, and always take it easy until the car is up to temp.

@@akikoulouris7489 I avoided short trips with the car. I made sure I drove it for a minimum of 30 minute intervals. I kept the rpms below 4,000. I was sure not to be too light on the car, but not to put the car under heavy loads for the first 1,200 miles. I stayed away from the major highways. Using cruise control during break in is a bad idea.

@@akikoulouris7489 The BMW's with the same engine are having consumption issues as well. I would check your oil after about 2,500 - 3,000 miles. Most people's oil light will come on on average at the 3,700 mile mark. These engines are known to burn oil during break in. I'm currently at 3,400miles (5,600kms) and I'm just waiting for the light to come on. The last green bar is remains on my vehicle status info screen. Most high horsepower BMW's(B58 Supra's) burn oil. The reason is the new friction reducing rings, and thinner oil being used. Some oil will be burnt because of the turbo charger. As long as you don't burn anymore than 1 litre per 1,500 miles, you will be fine. I read a really good article on why some modern engines consume oil, and it made me feel a bit better about the situation. I'll try to send you a link to a youtube video that helped me out a lot.

First 1,200 miles, keep it under 4k, and no full throttle. Try to vary engine speed while driving as well. After that, gradually increase to full throttle and higher revs over time.

had the same issue, but it’s because of me constantly driving it on sport mode, changed the oil to 5w30 and never had an issue since. That factory oil is too thin

Has anyone heard that 2021 Supra needs to have quart of oil added every 750 miles? Universal Toyota advised me today that the “manual requires” a quart of oil every 750 miles. Have looked but can’t find such a reference. Find it hard to believe that a brand new car requires a quart of oil every 750 miles so very very curious. After warning low oil light took it to the dealership and told it was very unusual. Kept it for a couple days and advised the issue had ben elevated. That we needed an oil study. Called today and told we #Toyota advised oil consumption was normal. That I would need to add quart of oil every 750 miles. Anyone else heard this story?

I've had oil consumption issues 7 times on my 2021 and I've taken it in everytime. I bought it new with 6 miles on it. All they have been doing is adding oil everytime. Toyota hasn't been doing anything even though the mechanic wants to put a new engine in it. They just told me that they are now going to be rebuilding the engine. I'm honestly sick of my car as I have to taken it in so much. I love my supra but I almost feel like I'd be better off with a more reliable car.

My supra has brake issues, when i try to park the car and use full brakes, then slightly let brakes go it has that awful scratching noise. Went to Toyota they can't fix it and said it s normal

@@bman1668 I have to admit. Maybe in 5 years i"d be in the 70-75k market but I just don't want to spend over 55k on a car. I have other priorities and unless I become rich, that's all I got. And the next car would be a 911 targa top or an Aston Martin 2 seater (Vantage) but i know for sure i'd never buy bentley or buggati etc. 145k on a car is enough. Even if a billionaire I dont need a car more expensive than that.....I'd spend that money on my house or giving back charity-wise.

I wouldn’t, the gen 3 engines have a “bbq tick” sound that almost sounds like piston slap. I just sold my 2019 mustang because some guys have had engines warrantied due to scoring in the cylinder walls.
