2021 Mazda CX-30 Turbo Premium Review.
Subcompact crossovers are mostly known for being affordable and efficient, but fun and enjoyable to drive aren't characteristics we'd associate with these vehicles. The 2021 Mazda CX-30 Turbo is here to change all of that, as you have plenty of power to get up to speed quickly and you have a welcoming interior to make commuting less mundane. The real question is whether you should buy the turbo over the naturally aspirated variant. So let's find out if the $34k price tag is worth it.

Just purchased 2022 CX-30 Turbo Premium Soul Red white interior with 2,600 miles yesterday. I also test drove the non turbo. If your a "driver" turbo is the only option. The Adaptive Headlights in conjunction with auto high beams is amazing. Night driving is now lit up like Yankee stadium at all times. Should be mandatory. Would save many lives. Rides like a luxury car. At 80 MPH almost as quiet as a Lincoln Continental. Handles terrific. Plenty of leg room with the front seats set at the mid-way point. My 6' tall son got in back & his knees were 4" from front seat. Bose stereo sounded rich & deep. Oh yeah, zoom freaking zoom!

Just got a 2022 Premium Plus. The Platinum Quartz Metallic is a beautiful color if you can find it. Absolutely love the car so far. Can't wait to burn the complimentary tank of gas from the dealer which was 87 to see what it will do with 93 octane. It's already very spirited even with 87. Haven't been this excited to buy expensive gas in so long :)

Yes the interior surprised me, wasn't expecting it to be so sharp. The upgraded stereo system is also very good.

After driving a cx30 and a buick encore gx, both same price category in top trims, i bought the mazda (non turbo) …….superior driving characteristics, nicer interior and, unlike the buick, the mazda at speeds over 60 or so mph was stable and had considerably more oomph

In addition you don’t need premium gas and reliability is superb compared to those lux brands

I’m cross shopping this with a BMW X1 because of the driving dynamics and because I may feel it to be a more affordable payment for the quality and hp/torque. Between Premium & Premium Plus.

I would trust the Mazda to be a better long term value, BMWs eventually become service nightmares.

Tks for this great review. These are the exact 3 crossovers I’ve been considering. Agree that the Mazda offers the best value. I do believe ,however, that the Volvo would be the best of the 3 at handling the pothole ridden roads in the Northeast area.

I just bought a CX-30 premium Plus turbo for 35k out the door--the volvo was over 10k more with the same options and about 15% more on insurance.I just sold a 2020 Stinger so i had the money but decided to just buy the CX-30 outright and pocketed 9k extra.Also at 2 years the volvos are the same price as the Mazda so it loses more of its value after 2 years and I plan on keeping mine in the 3 to 5 years right before the price really tanks on a vehicle.The volvo and Audi are also slower then the CX-30--esepcially off the line and mid range where you nedd it the most--the CX-30 has so much torque down low that it gets off the line very quick for what it is--and also can hit triple digit speeds on the HWy with no problem.

@@khronin Tks for that info. I’ll be trading my A3 in for a compact SUV this spring. ThatCX-50 should be in showrooms by then. It’s very fresh & new looking IMO and is built on the CX-30 platform. I’ll test drive the turbo version just to confirm my opinion. With car prices being SO high this has been the most careful I’ve ever been in buying a new car since my first in 1976.

After almost 50 years of driving only manuals, I'm sad to say that I have to disagree. No point in having a manual unless you drive like an Andretti all the time. Used to be that brakes were so iffy that downshifting and using engine braking was de rigeur - not anymore and not for a long time. And automatics were inefficient and sloppy - again, not anymore. I enjoyed shifting my own, but the auto box on this one is just as good as a manual and a lot easier to live with in modern driving. This is a fantastic vehicle, maybe the best I've ever owned.

Quite honestly I didn’t notice much of a difference between both models outside of driving dynamics. The CX-30 is going to give you better versatility with the ground clearance, but the Mazda3 handles corners very well with the lower center of gravity. It really comes down to whether you want a lifted hatchback with a higher seating position, or you want car-like driving characteristics

The ground clearance is a killer.I have a Stinger GT 2020 AWD--beautiful fast nice car.But I now worry and have to drive very carefully to not damage the rims and or the front skirts.If this was out early last year I might have chose it over a Stinger.I wanted a GLA 45 AMG but was not willing to spend 60k plus.Also after owning a sub 5 second 0 to 60 car--it is literal overkill--you can hardly use the power anywhere but a clear HWY.I find myself getting on the HWY at triple digit speeds everytime without even putting the pedal down,I love my Stinger but it is probably the last low car I own.I came from a honda crosstour and loved that car but it lacked the power--this mazda strikes a nice balance.

@@khronin thanks for the insight. i wanted to buy the 4cyl Stinger, but they're not available here in Canada. The CX-30 was the next car that checked all the boxes. Ordered my Turbo 5 weeks ago.

So you suggest a CX-5 if you want to fit car seats, but aren't they the exact same size? The CX-30 being a sportier version of the CX-5.

The CX-5 is 6 inches longer and has a 3 inch higher roofline compared to the CX-30. The CX-50 will be the sportier version of the CX-5

Hi, I have an xc-30 turbo premium, engine: 2.5L SKYACTIV-G Turbo. Does this use regular or premium gas?

It can use both. With premium you get the best performance, whereas with regular you won't be unleashing all the horsepower and lb ft of torque.

Wow, with almost $34,000 as a starting price, this Mazda is really not that far from Lexus price.... with almost $34,000 along with options, theprice can easily reach $40,000.... that's Lexus price territory......so I will just add a few more thousands and get a Lexus...... I say if this Mazda top off at $35,000, it would be a good buy....
