Hello Bjørn. That physics part is so understated and underappreciated. Also in summer (at least in southern USA) petrol cars reduce the mil age by approx10% if AC is used. People somehow does register that probably because they are used to that fact. EV do similar in winter ( though loss could be 15-20%) . But as you say they efficient all the time.
@tavi_chocochip4 жыл бұрын
It's simply that people driving gas cars don't check the "range remaining" indicator, they just look at how much gas is left in the tank. So it's not as obvious when there's range degradation, even though the physics is indeed the same.

Your comments about not being a fan of frameless windows were spot-on! I hate them! To me, the frameless window is the worst single design error that Tesla made when they designed Model S. And it astounded me when they continued making that foolish design choice for the Model 3, Y, and even the pickup truck! As you demonstrated, the frameless windows cause real problems in winter. If the glass is covered in enough ice, the window will not retract into the door, and you cannot safely open the doors. If you force the door open, you may not be able to close it because the glass will not fit into the gasket. (It looks to me as if the Model 3 may not be as bad as Model S in this regard.) Plus, the frameless window design makes the door latch and window operation more complex, because they need to move the window each and every time the window is opened or closed, causing unnecessary wear and tear. And the fact is, there is no benefit to the consumer of having frameless windows! If the car were a coupe or a convertible, the windows must be frameless. And some luxury coupes use frameless windows so that the car looks like a convertible when the windows are all open. But Tesla makes only sedans, not coupes or convertibles, so the frameless window does no good for the car's looks! They are a really foolish design choice.

@dandaly73054 жыл бұрын
Some 'sun shades' have black on one side, silver on the other. Solar radiation penetrates the ice and heats the black side, if you put it facing out, and warms the interior after freezing rain after the sun comes up. Passive solar. Even with large accumulations of ice (12mm), there is a layer of water under the ice, so an easy 'chip'. Obviously best to have the windscreen facing the sun if possible. In southern Canada, we seem to be getting less snow and more freezing rain (this morning, 0C, freezing drizzle, then switching to light snow... we had a green Christmas). Our latitude is 45N; Oslo is roughly 60N, so there will be less sun there (on the solstice here, the sun was 21deg above the horizon, in summer, 65 deg). The ability to remotely condition the interior makes the thought of an EV attractive.

People forget how inefficient fossil cars are. Only 20-30% (40% at best) of the energy from the fuel is converted to moving the vehicle along the road. Although not desirable, even electricity generated by burning coal is around 35% efficient and oil/gas is up to approx 50-60% efficient, so those saying that there's no point in getting an electric car because the electricity is dirty are basically incorrect. Good evening Bjorn, I am a new follower and your videos convinced me to invest in a 2nd hand M3 LR from 2019 with 67000km (18" with aero cap on the wheels) I was wondering if you could help me understand the car better. I got the car 4 days ago and have been using it in a city (so max 50km/h) while the weather has been cold and quite wet. I have AC 18degC and usule heated seat in the lowest level, nothing else is heated. The car is in chill mode, I drive very smoothly, and I only drive with 1 pedal. The tires are winter tires with 40psi. It's quite hard for me to get less than 220Wh/km. I did not use pre-heating though. On my old Renault Zoé from 2013 with 22kWh pack, in the same driving conditions, I am getting 187Wh/km and I heat up much more than 18C and only pre-heat in the morning journey to work (7km away). Should I not expect better consumption from the M3? Anything you recommend me to check? Also last night I charged the car at 63% at the charger in my street, let it overnight in the street afterwards not plugged to anything, no sentry mode, everything off that can possibly be off (looked at all the infos about phantom drainage), this morning it was cold and snowy, I had lost only 2% SOC (but that's still quite a bit) and this afternoon I had lost 8%...which the energy app told me was consumed entirely in standby. After fiddling with the car to try and figure out what was wrong, not driving, I was at 52% (I did do a SW update as I thought this might be the problem). I am a bit at a loss here and any help or video you can provide on the topic would be fantastic! Thank you Bjorn and keep it up!

Looks like your Sentry Mode was turned on. I'm surprised that the front cameras were frozen over.

Nope. You mix up dashcam with sentry mode. Common mistake.

Hmmm my etron has frozen shut windows and doors even after 10-15min preheating 😂😂😂😂 Worse than a Tesla in only -3-3.5c. And the camera is only heated when sentry is on

What is expensif? In Spain the price per Kwh €0,83.

Where in Spain? In my house, last night I got 0,01€/Kwh (tarifaluzhora.es/?tarifa=discriminacion&fecha=28%2F12%2F2020), so not that expensive. Maybe you are talking about Ionity...

Scheiße 😂 The last time my wife took the Tesla, she came back. Frozen door handles, windows and the mirrors stuck, despite preheating. The neighbors were a little amused when I worked on the car with the hair dryer. 😁

Yes, the correct statement is that gas cars suffers in summer, since not only do they produce unnecessary heat during summer they waste even more energy cooling the extra heat caused by the engine, such waste. If people actually realised that 70-85% of all the gasoline they pay for is wasted, the switch to EV would be so much faster. Imagine that everyone would have to pay 70-85% in taxes when buying anything, people would get furious, and at least taxes might benefit you, so it's more like literally burning up the money for nothing.

Not all all the 70% are used for heating the cabin and engine. Most of it heats good mother earth. Like in the rest of the year.

@@helmuttrzoska4572 bjorn made a video talking about it and no, heating up the cabin barely uses any energy compared to all the energy that’s wasted as heat. Here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fmaoe6Chp7aUpa8

I would like to ask for your help. A person I think we have learned a lot from needs our help. Jordan Giesige at The Limiting Factor is considering working with his channel full time and quitting his day job. So if there is anything you can do to support his channel, it would be great. He needs more viewers who can also learn more about the technology of the future. Thanks in advance, Tony

Would it be fair to say that unlike fosil cars, the electric car's residual heat was already dissipated during the production and transformation of the electric power.
