As a massive Tesla and Sandy fan, I’m not sure this video is particularly impartial. There were a number of times where the answer was right in front of you and the car was unfairly penalised for this. UI/UX is part of the car, it can't be ignored. It's obvious to me that the empty square on the left is a home button, but that's not a universal convention. The UI already drops labels on everything when it detects a nearby hand, why not drop a "home" label, or a subtle house icon in the center, to hint that it is something you can press. Every other menu button on the screen does this. The good news is that this is something that can be easily fixed, so it might not be a long term issue, so it's more of a "Windows 8 start screen" instead of a "No wiper stalk",

Translation of a middle part of the video: I enter a menu entry that's clearly stating "here you can add an unknown charging station that you know of" and complain that this can't be used to find the stations that is known. Update: Actual label is "Locations", which turns out to be "Saved charging locations" when you click on it. It is indeed slightly misleading and could be easily rectified in a couple of ways: (1) call this "Bookmarks": (2) add a "Search" or "Locations" (in a sense of search for known locations) sub-menu here; or (3) allow searching for known locations in this menu entry. Should any of this be in "charging" menu? Don't know, but having the same function on two places wouldn't really bother me. **VW could and probably should improve this.** The rest is not their fault, as Sandy clicks on "Add current position as a charging station" and then spends a few minutes in that menu point complaining that he can't use it to search for known locations. kzbin.info/www/bejne/aaCmaqaLntysgpo That's basically just being anal and complaining because you feel like complaining. With all due respect for Munro and what he does, this video is plain ridiculous and he should apologize on the next one for spreading so much wrong info about the ID.4. I'm an Audi lover but I've owned a Tesla Model S and drove several Model 3. As I write this, I'm editing my test drive video to be uploaded later today on my channel (Exterior/interior review is already online); the ID.4 is a valid alternative to a Tesla Model Y, they're both good.

To be honest, the "empty box" as a home button trend really infuriates me. If it were a physical button, it would have gotten pressed, but if you aren't familiar with cellphone UIs, you have no reason to expect that said square is a button. It relies on a convention that not every target user has been exposed too. He literally presses every available button (except the hazard flashers), and doesn't find the home button. Tesla's UI does a better job of being discoverable for the most part (the Tesla logo as a button is a bit of a stretch though, because it looks like it might be decorative). My current vehicle (Polestar 2) has a similar problem, the home button is an illuminated bar at the bottom of the screen, you could easily be forgiven for thinking it is a design feature, many passengers actually wind up using the "all apps" button (top bar, four squares), since it is pretty obvious it is something you can touch, one passenger only discovered it by accidentally brushing the button. While with a cell phone, you can reasonably assume that the user might already have seen that convention, or that you will get to display a tutorial to the end user, that is not a given with a car.

This is exactly what those "Focus Group" should do: - Take a set of 'lambda' test drivers (some one who never drove an EV before) - Meet at an airport rental car location (after been flying cross country for 6 hours or more...) - Give different EVs available from different car makers. - Have enough electricity in the battery to reach a charger. and make a video of the different driving experiences of a typical full week business or family trip and publish it !!! As a bonus, have some of the drivers using only 'flip phone' with no App and Internet access instead of smartphone, hahaha !!!

Regarding the "getting to the map" I seriously have to disagree with you. Literally after 1 second of seeing the screen I would've tapped on the home button on the left part of the screen to get to the menu where you'll probably find the map. The car literally told you on that screen that you were adding the "current position as a charging location" and NOT searching for a charger. That's probably to manage how the car charges at your home. Maybe you have a second location like your work where you want it to charge in a different way. That's what this is probably meant for. For me personally this was totally easy to understand. Maybe not as intuitive as a Tesla, yes, but I immediately knew what to do (I've never driven an ID car before, I drive a Tesla).
@stephanweinberger3 жыл бұрын
Exactly. He is in the car configuration, where you can set different charge profiles for different locations (e.g. only charge to 80% when at home, or try to reach 100% SOC at 5pm when at work because the electricity is free there). What bothers me most is that the car surely did not start up in this sub-menu. When you switch it on it first presents the home menu - and there's a huge button for navigation there. So how/when did Sandy enter this sub-menu and why wasn't he aware that he's not on the main screen. It's hard to believe this happened "by accident"...

A useful video-if one’s purpose for watching is because s/he has a desire to see how the ID.4 performs as a rental vehicle. I believe the vast majority of ID.4 acquisitions in the beginning are going to be actual consumers...people that will take the time to familiarize themselves with a car they’r going to fork over a boatload of cash to acquire. The comparison he notes with an iPhone is rather ironic. The box on the left hand side of the screen operates in much the same way as an old-school iPhone’s “home” button. Press that, and you’ll see all of the apps, one of which is navigation...it does NOT require a voice command. The comment about having to seek a charging station is a bit off the wall as well. The ID.4 uses standard charging connections by default. So, J1772 or CCS at any infrastructure that supports those standards. It is NOT necessary to seek an Electrify America location, unless the goal is to use that for the purpose of enjoying the free charging provided to those who acquire an ID.4. Whether all of them in aggregate are sufficient I believe is a valid issue. But it is also valid for any EV; Tesla charge points are not everywhere either. (They are focused along main corridors.) I think the comments on driving were fair, though I wish this video focused more on that, versus the rant about the user interface. I have owned 2 Volts, a BMW ActiveE, A BMW i3, a Toyota RAV4 EV (second generation), and Honda Clarity PHEV. Each had their pluses and minuses. I hated the UI on all of them, honestly. I’m not totally in love with the ID.4’s either...but it is incrementally better. Some of the comments below are out there with respect to feedback. Using CarPlay, was simple. I paired my phone, I was asked if I want to use CarPlay, and it worked. (There was no need for me to manually connect to the ID.4’s WiFi spot.) The reason it does connect to that, by the way, is because one is using wireless CarPlay. If you don’t like it, plug the phone in. This is an Apple functionality issue, not the ID.4.

I had a testdrive with the ID4 and understood the system quite well to be honest, I believe Sandy just had to go back to the main menu by pushing the square home button on the left side of the display. The whole time while he was searching for navigation he was in the wrong menu, it was the menu for the car settings I believe and obviously the navigation has nothing to do with the car settings.... The navigation menu is one of the top level menus shown on main menu of the system. The following video explains the system and the different menus quite well: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qnXXi6JobN17iK8

But that’s exactly the problem. iPhone is intuitive because even two year old can use it. So is Tesla - it’s an iPhone of cars. This? This is far and away from intuitive. Nissan Leaf is semi intuitive. Some things are super easy to grasp, some are stupidly complicated. Like this four tiny buttons to use the menu under speedometer. Problem is not that I can’t use any car I want. I can. I’m used to quirky design of windows operating system and it’s sometimes completely messed up apps, but this thing is for Average Joe who gives no damn about hi design. He wants it to be as simple as toilet roll.
@thomaskiefer96693 жыл бұрын
I found the system quite easy to understand and intuitive to be honest, not sure why people have problems with it. One main menu where I can access the various apps for like phone, navigation, radio/media, car settings etc etc. and whenI want to go back to the main menu I push the home button. Thats quite simple to me...if someone has issues to understand this that person should not be allowed to drive a car in the public. Its actually a quite similar system principle what many other car manufacturers are using for their cars. Drove a Tesla a couple of times now and to me the VW system is not that much more difficult compared to the Tesla.

It's super easy in my opinion, but sometimes the absolute simplest of things (if you don't know about them) can cause frustration. Imagine trying to use an older iPhone without the home button; you'd be stuck in a single app and would probably end up using Siri to do simple things, like Sandy did here with voice commands. In this case though, the home button is bright and colourful but at no point did he press it. Maybe, instead of a square, he'd have noticed it sooner if it was a 'home' icon.

When making a new type of vehicle, it is important to make the driving experience simple and intuitive. In my opinion, It seems that VW has missed the mark on this. I was working at a two day event recently. We had 1600 individuals drive through and pick up their order. There were cars and trucks of all kinds. Most of the people owned newer vehicles. There were about 10 Tesla owners that came through. I asked all of the Tesla owners if they loved their Tesla, and would they buy one again. Everyone of them said that they would never buy anything but a Tesla.
@davidnielson91393 жыл бұрын
I think you would find a different response if you took some number of ICE car drivers and put them in a Tesla and an ID.4. The issue here is that Sandy seems to have learned all the ins and outs of the Tesla -- like to hit the little charging bolt to find charging locations. The ID4 is built to operate similarly to an ICE vehicle from the factory, so it has "creep," you coast when removing your foot from the accelerator (with the brake pedal handling regenerative braking), etc. Putting into gear is more intuitive than a Tesla, most people wouldn't think to move the "stalk." Newer Tesla's are even worse for new drivers as Tesla has eliminated almost all buttons -- that would "frustrate" the average person "going out to a rental car," even simple things like adjusting the climate vents. The issue here, Sandy learned "EV's" from using a Tesla and now gets frustrated when other cars don't operate the same as the Tesla. That isn't to say that there aren't things to criticize about the ID.4 -- I'll agree that the Entertainment system is not as logical as it should be. At the same time, it isn't as hard as Sandy made it. Yes, the "square" for a home button some won't find intuitive -- despite the fact that Apple and others used that to mark their "home button" for a decade or longer; but even then you have the "Menu" button just below the screen which is easy to find. The "set an appointment" screen that Sandy found was to set up your daily "home charging" schedule (similar to what Tesla has). In fact, what annoys me is how many simple things that Sandy should have realized -- things like charging stopping at 80% when a screen he had up showed that the charging limit was set to 80%. The issue isn't how the "average driver" would react, the issue is that Sandy is used to the "Tesla way" and is frustrated when the car's controls are not set up like a Tesla. That isn't to say that Tesla's aren't set up well or that VW doesn't need improvement, but both have their "learning curves" as every EV today will have (until the "standard ICE" car set up is no longer the standard.

If you don't have enough charge to get to your destination, it will automatically suggest a charging stop. He was in the car settings app. Sure it could be done better, but it isn't rocket science that he couldn't find a charger in what is basically the trip computer.
