You have such a positive attitude as you talk about known problems that the manufacturers should be fixing before delivering these vehicles. No one, especially a first time EV buyer wants to deal with these deficiencies right out of the gate. They need to get the engineers working and fix these things before delivery.

Volkswagen was a bit fast with the rolling out of their MEB cars, that is true. But one has to admit, that the they would never deliver cars with significant damage or with a quality as bad as Tesla‘s. Softwarewise something has to happen defenetly… I hope they hurry! 😌

I have driven all type of cars, from rangerovers to bentleys but I was amazed with VW ID 4. I think it's much more comfortable than all teslas. I am planning to get one soon. It's very very comfortable and quite. The built quality good. The suspension is soft yet when you go on turns it's not bad. If we realize just what we need in a car, a comfortable ride from Plot A to Plot B. I think Id4 ticks all the boxes. It's not as powerful as a tesla, but as a daily driver I prefer comfort.

What a great in depth review of your ID.4 in snow. I will sure to send this to a friend of mine who says “EVs don’t go in snow”. What a snow job! Does the ID.4 has a heat pump for cabin heating? My Mach E certainly doesn’t and I take a hit in winter. And as far as I can tell the Mach E does not have preconditioning for DC fast charging. My Model Y did. And the Mach E only has a Start Button in the app for remote heating; no specific choice of temp or seats or defroster. It sure seems that the ID.4 was built for the winter! Love your channel!

Kyle, I commute over the Vail pass daily with my 23 ID.4. As long as I'm at a low soc I've had excellent rates of charge with a very fast charge curve at the upper ends. The best I've started was at 174kw on a warmer day but I've also started at 151 when it was 27 degrees and over 100 at 15 degrees all at the Frisco EA. The curve has stayed as high as 90kw and doesn't drop until you pass 80% soc. I've had worse experiences when I've been at a soc above 50%, more in line with what you've said you're experiencing. The pass has been no problem since I put on Michelin CrossClimate 2s

@@Allison11111 After failed attempts at other brands I was lucky, I placed my order in early August and received it at the end of Oct. I think configurations mattered as they seemed to produce AWD Pro S models with the galaxy gray interior first. You might try the VW order tracker chrome extension if you haven't as that can give you a little more detail and possibly a VIN # if it has hit production. Once you get a VIN your dealer can get you a more accurate delivery date than the VW website can.

I live up a steep street and during the decline / incline I did a hard break test and it didn't care - traction control light didn't even kick in (only when making some sharp turns around the corner) Giveaway is my efficiency is down 15% but to avoid putting on snow cables and getting stopped by CHP? I was wondering if you might answer some cold climate questions in a review. Some I have (Wyoming) 1 do ev's keep the batteries from freezing 2 do they need to be plugged in for this or will they survive off the battery for few days. 3 I know from riding my ebike year around that my range on a cold battery went from 31 miles summer to 13 miles sub-zero. Is there an optimal temp for ev batterys to run at and can you adjust battery temp for colder days? 4 is it OK to leave your ev plugged into say a level 1 plug ((110) for days or weeks if you don't drive much in the winter (I am retired) 5 do all ev's have preconditioning and is it the same system for charging and cold weather or is there separate systems for each? Thanks I love your channel and have learned so much from it. Just wanted to make a note that Medicine Bow camp ground in the big horn mtns broke ground for a SOLAR POWERED camp ground to be finished in 2024. So you can charge ev's and camp off main grid. Winter neighbourhood that looks pretty much identical as here in Levis, QC, Canada, except for winter tires mandatory from Dec 1 each year, like... today but I have them on since more than a month now! You know what needs to be addressed on BEV cars, my ID.4 included? A wipers slot heater. Since there is no heat coming out from under the hood, snow accumulates there and changes to ice where the wipers need free space to move. I often struggle trying to keep the slot free of snow, when it gets too bad, I switch with my wife's car in the garage for a night to clean it up.

If you start your car outsides, it takes some KWh to heat up the cabin and battery to operating temperatures: battery will heat up to 6°C initially if colder than that. Even at 100% charge only see 212 miles total, far less than the 255 that is advertised. I live in the greater Seattle area and had some snow recently, it performed amazingly and the heated stearing wheel is priceless! The windshield wipers make an aweful sound and skip all over the place. Overall love the vehicle but the range is a bit concerning. No airbag warning on mine, so far.

Really great review thanks. IDK how representative the bugs your car is experiencing is of other IDs but its concerning that given all the negative publicity, the size of VAG and the time since launch, they still seem to be unable to fully debug them. Whats more worrying is that VW have announced the facelift ID coming in 23 which they say will address interior quality issues and bring new software. Maybe they cant fix the existing cars, or dont want to put the resources in to doing it. Hopefully they do the right thing by existing owners and work out the problems.

The ID.4 is tempting at times, but the software bugs are unacceptable and hold me back from considering one though the range is too low for my months of winter. Ground clearance is a bit low. Mostly though I'm spoiled by my '22 Passport with Blizzak DM-V2 winter tires, which drives like a stable tank in snow/ice. I loved my '13 outback but this Passport has been easily much more capable/stable in my winter conditions. I've had a few winter tires, but nothing so far has come close to the deep tread Blizzaks for reliable traction in horrible conditions. Granted in my area I can spent 2-3 months rarely getting days much above freezing.

North American spec ID.4s have resistive heating for the cabin. European spec ID.4s use a heat pump, which is much more efficient. That will cost Chattanooga-built drivers mileage in the winter. On the flip side, the car has a heated windshield, seats, steering wheel, seats, etc etc. It's different from jumping into an ICE Corolla that can make a 90 F cabin.

Ok, not in that snow, but in the intermediate seasons or warmer winter days, wet roads, they are better than pretty much all winter tyres. 13:10 if they were having a tough time with engineering the drum brakes to work with the awd system, why didn't they just use disc brakes? how much money are they saving by going with drum brakes in this day and age? makes me wonder what else they've nickle and dimed designing this car. maybe airbag components? judging by the airbag error light on the dash.

Are those 20" wheels? If so I'd be curious if you could do another test in the snow with winter tires on . I don't drive enough to change them this year but might do winter tires next year.

Not having manual preconditioning makes this a no go. Wish I would’ve realized before picking up the 23 id4 myself recently on a whim. Dealer reassured 2 times it came with a charger walking to sign, then sure enough it wasn’t provided on 23s. Had to charge at EA for first few weeks while ordering and installing charger
@michaelcummins5974
@michaelcummins5974 2 жыл бұрын
Agree that they need to work on the preconditioning, but also for most users that won't be fast charging often, not a huge deal. But it will be a huge and welcome improvement when they eventually do it. More important, imo, is a heat pump. The charger they used to include was $350 and slow level 1 only really suitable for emergencies and some travel situations. You're better off saving the upcharge on the purchase price and buying either a similar emergency unit for half the price, or put the money towards a much more capable portable charger. I ended up with the J+ boost charger, does up to 40 amps. I got a good deal on mine, but only ended up costing a couple hundred more than if I'd gotten the pretty useless included charger with higher purchase price on vehicle.

Good point Michael, and thanks for talking me off the edge. Lol. Makes sense that with inflation, had the cable not be left out, it may’ve resulted in a higher msrp

@@robertt1336 Indeed. As a general rule, VW charges you MORE for included/package accessories than if you buy them direct from the VW dealership. I bought some of my mats and things from a dealer and had them shipped to me for less than the same items would have been when I was optioning my ID.4 build. I can't think of any reason why VW would charge you less than $350 more for an included slow charger. I was a little upset about it at first too, but it's actually better for the customer in the end to have more choices where to put that money.

Hey I was wondering why you don't recommend an extended warranty. My wife is putting about 20,000 miles a year on her current vehicle. After 4 years I would be getting close to the end of the battery warranty. I was thinking about adding ext. warranty mainly for the battery to allow longer use of the car before having to trade? Your thoughts. Thanks for all the great info.

Got an ID.4 question, but not sure where best to post it. Am Interested in V2L/V2H. Is this definitely coming to ID.4 in 2023 (or all the ID.4’s retroactively capable of handling V2L , and the feature just requires an OTA FW update)? Thanks!

I test drove the ID4 and really liked it, but for: the skinny uncomfortable arm rests, the lousy tech, and of course.... the supercharging scene, notwithstanding the problem of not having a conditioned pack for charging. Did I mention no frunk? Glad to see people buying them and I see alot on the road in NC. ( I drive a Model Y.)
@michaelcummins5974
@michaelcummins5974 2 жыл бұрын
Armrests are no more... 2023s have a redesigned center console and no armrests. The tech doesn't hold a candle to Tesla, true. But it's passable in the newer iterations (3.0 and up), and you don't have to go into a damn screen to open the glove box, move vents, etc. It's far more livable than the Tesla design, but far more laggy and less refined. Charging is def better for Tesla right now, but that is changing quickly too, and for most people will be a rare inconvenience as you mostly charge at home. The existence of a frunk is evidence of poor design. That space is much better used in the cabin, or for making components easier to access for maintenance. The only reason for having frunks is that we are conditioned to expect a hood designed for an ICE. As we get used to the new order of things, that wasted space will go away entirely and be better used inside the main cabin. I will say the one good application for the frunk is a small sealed compartment for a travel charger, so it's not buried under cargo in the back when you need it. There's an aftermarket kit that lets you add a small frunk to the id4 that's about right size for this. Also, the huge frunk in the F150 would be more useful in the context of a pickup with an open bed. In a passenger vehicle it's just kind of a waste of space that should be better used through better design. The model Y is fast and the infotainment is snappy and overall well designed, but for everyday use where you're not really messing with the screen that much or trying to drag race, the id4 is much more pleasant experience with a much better overall build quality. There are still issues... I'm looking at you haptic buttons and piano black finishes, rear window button nonsense, etc... but I like the id4 better overall than all the other EVs I've gotten to drive (quite a few, including model Y), and it's cheaper than most of them to boot. When I get my hands on a Rivian, that will likely change, but also talking about 2x price there.

I bought an ID 4 2023 for my wife and she loves it! She is short and she can see so well and so can I out the front of the car. My brother has a model Y and all he can do is complain about how big the front end is and how he can't see that well over the hood. So that's where your front is! Most people I talk to don't use it anyway and it makes the front end longer.

Kyle, you mentioned you thought the pack tries to keep itself at 77 F constantly. Have you tied reading the OBD data yet? My ID.4 did not seem to, and in fact cooled down while driving in the cold after a cold-gate fast charge session even when the temps were always below 50F.

Great vid, nice to see that I could use my ID.4 in so less than favorable conditions. Just an FYI, Volkswagen still hasn't updated their software or the app and key features from other manufactures are still missing from the ID line, some of which are on their ICE cars. Would love to see a vid on tires, I have to get some soon and would love to see which tires would best fit my needs.

So the German AAA did a test to see which car heats up the fastest and also which EV holds the temperature longest to test the insulation. EVs need good insulation to reduce the amount of energy needed to heat them up. The BMW iX as well as the VW ID came out on top.
