I never for the life of me will understand how Def reduce emissions. It cost a lot to engineer and manufacture all the parts for them. Then you have the blue juice in plastic bags I side a cardboard jug. The kicker for me is that right now your doing the Regen so the truck is running at a time it would not be otherwise.

The urea (DEF) bonds with the Nitrogen that is produced with the exhaust, and then when they come in contact with the filter material in the DPF a chemical reaction occurs that removes the carbon and NO2 from the exhaust. Producing a cleaner exhaust output. Diesels are nasty on the environment.

Overall emissions, it's likely worse when you factor everything in. Just at the tailpipe it helps, but IMHO not enough to justify the added costs, loss of reliability, and repairability. All the extra manufacuring, packaging, extra fuel burnt for regen, loss of MPG due to the added exhaust restrictions and added SCR equipment weight.. to do what? Force emissions on everyone that are really only needed for very few due to the lay of the land where they live?

It vaporizes the soot. Particulate matter is very bad for people to breath in.

@@yarrik701 The air coming out of a modern Diesel exhaust pipe is cleaner than the air it takes in.
