It's astounding some of the engineering decisions they make - technology aside even their engineering is often very questionable - one I recently became aware of is they put skeletal cast conrods in most of their V8's - ostensibly to save rotating mass - but the real outcome is a lot of McLaren models are very prone to bending rods. I mean, they could at LEAST use forged rods on all their cars, given how expensive they all are - and when you are asking a small V8 to produce big power at big revs, the last thing you should be doing is trying to use skinny cast conrods just so the engine revs a fraction more freely - hell even my low revving Lexus V8 has forged rods, and it was a fraction of the cost of even an "entry level" McLaren. The engine they use is derived from a Nissan unit developed for racing - Nissan NEVER put cast rods in it though.

671 hp = 500 kW (rounded to the nearest whole number) No idea *why* that's being used as a figure though. Might mean something to the regulations of some market it gets exported to, carried into other markets the same way as with Japanese automakers agreeing to limit cars to 276 hp / 206kW. Something that still occurs even on non-Japanese automakers, long after the "agreement" has ended. Or, might just be a nice round number close _enough_ to the average output of the engines that it's just what they went with.

I guess engineers use kW because it's easier to do maths for acceleration, etc., and the early planning stages of what a car will be and where it will sit in the market are based around things like number of seats, number of doors... and where the power should be. @@dc-fc7tp the MC 20 is old fashioned even for previous generation cars. It's a different category because it's a different kind of driving experience not because of the price or the engine. And I'm not saying the MC 20 is bad, if you buy a hybrid super car you'll be dealing with much higher repair and maintenance costs compared something like the MC 20

I understand we're both of you are saying truly I do. But McLaren seems to be especially bad when it comes to reliability and problems. And dealing with those problems. Jay Emm on cars made several videos about several poor experiences dealing with McLaren. As consumers who are spending such a large amount of money on cars, people should demand better. A car that costs 1/15 as much should not be better put together, and I'm not sure why people make excuses for them.

The NSX weighed 600 lbs more than this car and had 3 motors to the Artura's one. McLaren (and Ferrari) recognized that extra motors and electric thrust aren't worth the weight penalty, they definitely did not follow Honda's lead. They already understood before the NSX even got launched.

Thanks for yet another epic review. 🙏 Just watched the launch event for the new Alfa Romeo 33 Stradale. What a beautiful vehicle. They talked a lot about the importance of dreaming at the event and the dream that instantly popped up in my head was not to drive it myself, but for you guys, the Throttle House team, to come here to Europe and review that amazing piece of machinery on some twisty Italian roads. That is how close to the heart your reviews have become. ❤

A beautiful car, but the argument “But it’s got great dynamics” just doesn’t cut it. After all, that’s the fundamental premise of the car. Why should anyone accept faults from a $200,000 car that they’d be enraged over in a $30,000 daily driver? Worse, McLaren knows their cars are poorly built and seem to remain arrogantly unconcerned. The web is full of examples of horror stories regarding McLaren’s shoddy service and poor treatment of their customers. If I ever reach an understanding with the lottery commission, McLaren will not be on my shopping list…😎

I wonder if that 671 hp figure is like a "gentlemen's agreement" type deal of some sort. Or maybe it's high enough a number for the lower model cars to sound wildly impressive but low enough that 700+ sounds absolutely unbelievable. Idk but that's odd.
@ralfrudi3963 Жыл бұрын
671 bhp is just an odd number in the imperial system. 671 bhp is about 680 metric horsepower (yes, there is a tiny difference) and about 500 kW, which is the unit most likely to be used by the engineers. So they went for a nice round number in 500 kW and then the marketing department has to convert it to the odd 671 bhp.

It's just the converted number from 500kW. Nothing special about honestly.

I took delivery of my Artura in May (my 6th McLaren) and I'm already selling it. Everything was working well but it was too slow on the track, as I primarily track my McLarens. The only problem I have with the Artura is that McLaren should not have categorized it under "Super Series!" The battery is good early on to eliminate turbo lag but at mid to max speeds it's only as powerful as it's V6 and no more! My top speed at my local track was ~125 mph, compared to my 720s doing 148mph. It's a fantastic all around canyon and twisties car if you never take it to track and expect high track performance!

After having just paid 10k to a McLaren dealership (where I saved 12k by doing a lot of the work myself first, but some things just aren't doable in your garage), the opening bit hits me right in the nuts! Also, I am moving from the 650s Spider to a 720s Spider. The dealer desperately tried to sell me on the Artura instead. I drove one of my friends' Artura before the dealer's, and my mind hasn't been changed. There is no general argument for the Artura over a 720s, and IMO, there isn't an argument for an Artura over the 650s. It sounds like shit compared to the 650/720. Then you add that there isn't (yet) a Spider, which is the number one reason I bought McLaren over the competitors; the McLaren carbon monocoque allows for the convertible to not compromise structural rigidity when cornering, which if you've never experienced chassis twist on a convertible supercar (like a Huracan/488), it's gut wrenching. All that being said, I would take the Artura over 99.9% of cars, just not over almost any other supercar.

Wonderful review as always. Stupid tech for tech/cheapness sake. I hate it so much. I didn't even think about the fact that the displays could potentially overheat and shutoff. HVAC controls absolutely should be a physical control. Even the interface, why swipe up? Why can't you just touch it? Completely diverts the driver's attention from driving. And yes, those thick bezels look terrible.

What a terrible car, it's not even funny. The quality control is atrocious which is unacceptable at this price point, the design is generic and the powertrain isn't exciting. Just for comparison, the 296 is a Ferrari, it's prettier and comparatively better made. The Porsche 992 Turbo S is infinitely more well made, prettier, timeless, will hold it's value, is more usable and won't bankrupt you with maintenance bills. McLaren will follow Jaguar, MG and Lotus into obscurity, no doubt.
@ApothecaryTerry Жыл бұрын
A) You didn't watch the last 98% of the video did you? B) Jaguar just announced significant profits, MG are breaking their sales records on a consistent basis and Lotus have sold 4x the number of Emiras in half of 2023 that they did in all of 2022, plus have 30x that number of preorders for the Eletre. C) Or, if we're talking publicity, Jag never lacked it, MG have just launched their performance crossover thing, which is all over KZbin (e.g. Carwow drag races) and nobody has shut up about Lotus since the Emira was announced. Whatever anyone thinks of the cars, there's nothing obscure going on except your view of the world...
