Golf R and Corolla GR = Need AWD, hatchback, grip for days and 4 doors? Mustang GT = Want V8 soundtrack and large cabin and trunk? N cars = Want amazing feedback FWD safe fun?

@@rocks4396 I used to be those negative people 15 years ago. Back then, the S2000, NSX, RX8 and even before that the Supra (before Fast and Furious mainstreamed it) etc used to be sold. Those cars were nit picked to death by journalists and enthusiasts. Example - the S2000 was dangerous, no torque, snap oversteered. The NSX was boring and slow compared to supercars. The Supra was too big and heavy. The Evo was too cheap feeling. Most car people are impossible to please. Look back and everyone lusts after those cars. If you missed your chance then, ignore the haters and buy these before electric cars kill them.

In Canada, the base BRZ/GR86 can be had for about $32k. Z starts at just shy of $50k, and you have to spend $60K just to get an LSD. The price delta between the two is just two significant to really consider cross shopping the two.

I would say the average customer that can afford both cars and only needs two seats will take the Nissan z. If you already have a powerful car I can see people buying the gr86 as a fun handling toy. I personally want a fast car when I buy a sports car not saying the gr86 isn't a great car, but I see alot of people hating on the z because they can't afford it and try to justify not having it.

well, it depends on what you want the car for. if you want a good drag racer and a good cruiser, go w/the Z. i heard the new Z isn't a good track car. imo the BRZ/86 isn't a comforable car for cruising and long distance driving. it's ok for short distance but after an hr it will hurt your back.
@BlaziNTrades

It seems like although both cars have changed, the comparison is still pretty well the same as it was before. The Z is bigger, heavier, faster and most people think it's at it's finest being driven 8/10ths. The Toyobaru is smaller, lighter, slower, and it's far more at home being driven at or near the limit. I had a 2015 FRS and loved it, so I know I would enjoy the new cars with slightly more power, but damn I would be hard pressed to pick between these two now.

It happens the same in the new G80 BMW M3/M4 that have ditched the dual clutch sequential gerabox in favour of the ZF8 torque converter type: the reaction time of the paddles is awful, compared to a twin clutch. And I don't know why, as the gearchange itself is virtually as fast, or fast enough in both types (the time the engine is not pushing the car is negligible in both types of gearboxes), but on the ZF the time between you act on the paddle, and the car actually start doing it, is sooo high. And tbe same seems to happen on this Z. On a dual clutch, even an old DSG from 2009 like in my current car, you feel the car upshiting/downshifting in virtually real time as you act on tbe paddles, and this even on a simple VW. On a car like an F80 M3 with DKG, or a modern Porsche PDK... The car have done the change when your fingers still didn't have left the paddle. Not to mention of course Ferraris or Lamborghini Huracan. But even "more mundane" cars with DSG boxes like a Golf GTI Mk7/7.5/8, feels waaaay faster paddle reaction time

The BRZ is great but wish the rear seat legroom were larger and a T-top would do it for me. Keep supporting fun new cars by actually buying new fun cars. Still happy with my 2020 ND, 5.7s 0-60, 33 mix mpg, 38 hwy mpg, softtop, 2334lbs, and paid just MRSP out-the-door (includes tax and everything).

Odds are slim that many will be cross shopping these two cars due to the 22K price gap (granted, upping to the BRZ limited gets you no drivetrain improvements, and would be closer in price to the base Z with 400 HP, but still likely a roughly 10K gap) but always nice to see more drive time on each. The real head to heads will come with the base Z vs the Supra 2.0 and this Z versus the Supra 3.0. In typical car maker fashion, Nissan hasn't apparently let the press have a base Z yet, much like Acura has only offered the new Integra in top trim A-Spec with Tech MT package. Will be curious to see if the lesser Z (at around 40 k allegedly) loses much handling/braking/amenity feel vs this 50K trim level. I think the LSD goes away on the cheaper one, but whether the person who doesn't track the car will notice is the real question. The base Z might be the bargain here for pure fun since it can be had with the MT. Looks like the initial MT on the Supra is going to be in the 3.0, and I've heard comments from other reviewers that the MT (as experienced in the Z4) is not top tier.

Both of these seem like great options in this day and age though I do miss screen-free interiors with analog gauges. The Z looks nice, but comes across as porky when compared with the BRZ. As with any 2-door coupe, the Z was always awkward as a 2+2. With that in mind, I'd love to see what Subaru/Toyota could do with the BRZ/86 design as a pure 2-seater. It would no doubt look better. @@aaromon43 They're also one of those things that never age well. How many people out there are still using a tablet or smartphone that is more than 10 years old? The interiors of these cars are going to look pretty dated in another decade or so. It would be cool if their respective manufacturers offered an "analog package" that did away with these things, but the market for such an option would be very small. I can't exactly blame the new car consumers as they are really only worried about these cars as it applies to their ownership, which when it comes to cars is somewhere less than a decade on average.
