First up, this is great review style. Not shouty, overly excited or trying to be a pocket Clarkson. Good summary of points too. Secondly, the car! I have a 3 yr old previous generation of this and it's a dream, for all the reasons you've listed - if you live in a rural area! Can't imagine commuting in mine, but for times when youre away from urban landscapes this is the biz. Good example- many rural roads where I live in northern England and the Scottish borders have single track road. If you meet another vehicle coming in the opposite direction one or both of you have to pull onto grass/mud verges, which can become a quagmire in winter. But i nthe Subie - no issues. I often have to drive into and across fields to feed horses, etc, and gateways cn become a completely muddy mess. No problems in this. Although a set of winter tyres or ATs sorts you out. You do need a spare tyre however, and this car has the space for one. I'm looking towards buying the next gen of these and I'm worried Subaru will do what it has done with the rest of it fleet in Europe and turn them into mild hybrids!! The XT version r better still the Wilderness version available in the States would be a massive plus. No chance over here in nanny state howevre. Keep th reviews coming.

Thanks. I shuld be at the unveiling of the new Forrester in LA next week - interested to see what they come up with as it's supposed to be "ALL NEW"

I'll look forward to your review. I recently drove a brand new Forrester in the UK for a a couple days while there was some warranty work and servicing taking place on the OB. Can't say I was impressed in respect to the car fulfilling the role it was supposedly designed for. Firstly, the positives. It was pleasant to drive and I liked its looks - the Black Sport model. It also rides slightly higher than the OB (118mm vs 120 mm) It was of course a hybrid, and there was the problem. It was very slow to accelerate compared to the OB. Also, with a shrunken fuel tank to make way for the battery its range was markedly reduced (important when in rural areas) with the hydrib giving no significant benefit with MPG, and that also meant no place for a spare wheel. Anyone who has copped a puncture several muddy fields away from a rough track will know that calling for assistance to the AA or similar, especially when there is no phone signal, is a significant weakness , and in such places 'the gunk' fix is risible. or won't sort out a tear. Add in a horse trailer too, and waiting around for hours, even if that is possible, for a fix is best avoided. as it can lead to other problems (angry horses!!). Enjoy your trip. @@DefinitelyNotAGuru

I am in Australia too and while it might be OK on the freeway, when I borrowed one from the dealer for a weekend extended test drive, with just 2 people and a couple of days luggage it struggled in the overtaking lanes on a normal road. Its a shame because it was an ideal contender to tow the jet ski for a weekend away and apart from the performance, its a really lovely car.

Nice video, but gee (!) Subaru's are so expensive in the UK! My 2.5Litre Outback Touring 2022 (top model with leather interior) was $54,000 Australian dollars driveaway price - at the current exchange rate, that's about $32,000 GBP ! I love the Outback, very smooth and can take on rough terrain when needed.

@@DefinitelyNotAGuru In 2022, the base model Outback was around $46,000 AUD (~£26,000 GBP), you guys are up for a whopping £10,000 GBP extra. Plus petrol I believe is currently around £1.70/litre in the UK, whilst here it’s say $1.80 AUD (~£1.10)/litre. I lived in Sheffield for 3 years ~1990, it seems costs of living have really shot up since then, especially energy expenses. Sorry to get off topic, but UK Subaru prices shock me!

I think these are lovely cars, ideal compromise between a station wagon (estate) and an SUV so big points to Soob. However, even if I could live with a CVT, the Outback is, in my opinion, gutless to drive, no use if you need to overtake.

Have on and it can overtake well fully loaded - 4 adults, a roof box, Thule bike rack, 2 bikes and luggage on the freeway (I'm in Australia) its fine.

@@shaun1900 Agreed, it’s a great vehicle, very smooth, quiet, and once it’s on the highway, I find my 2022 Outback readily jumps up in fuel economy. Get the turbo if you really want the hp, but the penalty is less mpg coupled with the higher price of Premium petrol (in Australia).

You said the 2.5 L engine lacks power and then you mused the mileage is not very economical. If you get a bigger engine for “enough power”, that would mean bigger gas consumption.
@DefinitelyNotAGuru
@DefinitelyNotAGuru 4 күн бұрын
Wrong. It needs more output, that power plant is a bit of a dinosaur and needs a better tune at very least. With more power it would have to work less and may return better MPG.

For whatever reason, Subaru have struggled to break into the "everyday" type car market. Of course the souped up 4WD jobs have always been in demand with the whizz bang crowd. A bit of a niche product, but certainly reliable and solidly built, apart from that god awful diesel they tried. Dealers tend to avoid those.....as does anyone who knows about the issues.

@@jdmguy44 Agreed, and they do very very well in Australia too, as an everyday car. There are tons of Foresters here, and arguably the most ‘everyday’ car in Subaru’s range would be the XV Crosstrek, they are incredibly popular here!

I just had a (rented) Skoda Kamiq recently with a DSG box and thought it was poor. Nothing like the smoothness of a CVT. Jerky drive train at low speeds and it rolled back and forward when stationary, even when in gear! Plus I've heard that DSG boxes can have their issues. If I had to buy an auto I would rather have a smooth and linear CVT box or a torque converter box any day over any VW group DSG product.
