East of Tokyo, there is a wide region which is extra flat. It is windswept too. There are reedbeds and swamps with brackish waters probably due to the long coast with large rivers estuaries. This winter, in spite of the lower level of water, many ducks gathered there. It is also a place famous for birds of prey and small birds sheltering in the dry (in winter) vegetation.
It is a unique habitat and it is to be hoped that it will be protected.

Thank you for your kind words. This video was showing the importance of reedbeds and water to preserve the lives of many birds. Japan has no wilderness protection for habitats. Thank you again and very best wishes.🙏🙏😊😊

Hello 👋 ! I do apologize for answering late : I only discovered now that I did no answer. It was a great place unfortunately unprotected but I hope it will remain there for all the birdwatchers to discover unusual biotopes. Thank you indeed for writing and for your videos. Very best wishes for your birding and wellbeing.🙏🙏😊😊‼️

It is I who thank you for your very kind words. The atmosphere of the reedbeds with birds fleeing the wind and at dusk when it was a bit calmer the birds of prey just appearing gave to that ( rather far away) place a very special atmosphere. The sunset was really unexpectedly beautiful. I hope spring will be on its way in a month about but if you have the time to film your wonderful birds I would be grateful ! Very best wishes. 👋👋🙏🙏😊😊🍀🍀🕊️🕊️‼️

Areas like that should be protected. It is amazing how much life exists on a relatively small area. Great job of spreading the message👍

Thank you for so just a comment ! Yes indeed. Any people with common sense would protect such habitats. I’m afraid to say that from the nature conservation point of view it’s harder and harder. Even Ramsar sites are not protected well. And we don’t have many. Reedbeds are one of the richest habitats that exist and they are also useful to fix part of metal pollution into the soil preventing it to seep elsewhere. I only hope it won’t get worse. Thank you very much for your kind words. Very good luck for your beautiful orchids and so amazing birds.

Hello and thank you for your very kind words. Yes the apricot tree blooms even though it is no 10 degrees Celsius. It’s weird..yes there were many sparrows which are in decline over here. Loss of habitats. Still some parts are preserved which is a good thing. Let’s hope it will last. I must say a word of thanks for all your great videos that show fantastic birds. Thank you indeed. Very best wishes.

Thank you Patricia, for a really beautiful and artistically composed video. I thought I saw a lot of ducks in Greylake but they are nothing compared to the numbers you have there and such variety, including gorgeous views of Baikal and Falcated ducks which are such exotic birds to us. Shrike, Osprey, Stilt, Black-Necked Grebe and many more rarities. I know people rave about birding in Costa Rica but you should be employed by the Japanese tourist board for promoting birding in Japan! Wonderful! Hope you're having a successful and productive weekend!

It is I who thank you. Honestly. I am much more envious of your shelducks and seashore birds that we don’t get not to mention all the species up north like in the Farne islands or down Ireland or everywhere in the UK! ( guillemots, kittiwakes, puffins! ) I long to see a great black backed gull and your familiar birds do know how to sing! The place I went East of Tokyo is extremely flat and windy but it still retains swamps fed with brackish water. Indeed there are more birds there and very good at playing hide and seek. The harriers are a kind of mystical goal for all Japanese birders and they gather at dusk waiting quietly for the silent birds to hunt. For some reasons the stilts come in the winter and generally to the lotus fields where they can feed on small fish and sometimes worms. The Japanese eat the lotus roots after the blossoming of the huge flowers. And they keep the precious water in the fields all year round. This time there was an event which was impossible to film as the ducks kept in the middle of the large swamp: 10 000 Baikal teals were there together with the other ducks and birders were doing their best to find sheltered spots where they could film them. Still it was frustrating to see this mass of ducks keeping away from all cameras ! As for myself I keep my eyes open for each new video you make. I really liked the UK and birdwatching there at a time when it was mostly binoculars and telescopes and twitching lists. I hope you are feeling better and that spring is bringing you warbling songs from each clump of trees 🌳 ! Very good luck and my best wishes for the weather to be clement. Thank you again.😊😊🙏🙏‼️

I was frustrated in my attempt to see the ONE Baikal in Britain here in Somerset and I’m still very envious of your 10,000 but I get your point about the diversity of birds in the U.K. However from what I’ve seen, thanks to your excellent videos, you have just as many or more species there and what would be rarities here, Ospreys for example, occurring regularly over in Japan. Keep up the good work! Best wishes for the weekend. 😊🍀🍀John.
