GMC Canyon is probably one of the best mid-size trucks on the market. It has a strong Turbocharged 4-cylinder, great interior space, and an amazing ride.

Seems that anytime some one truly likes this truck, the Taco squad comes along and tells you that the GM truck is not reliable, and the truck has only been on the market for a few months. Things I do know: the 2.7 turbos are out there since around 2018 and have over 200k miles with no issues in full size GM trucks. It gets old after awhile hearing all the negativity from the Taco Cult who seem to think its there life mission to keep buyers away from other brand trucks. Stop drinking the Kool-aid and let buyers think for themselfs. I could care less that you like Tacomas, please enjoy your personal choice in a truck and don't get upset if someone disagrees with your opinion.

That’s because GMC and Chevy have horrible reliability. The Taco squad are obnoxious but the reliability on Chevy/GMC is regrettably bad. There really isn’t a bad looking truck out there these days. But some will go a lot longer than others when it comes to longevity and maintenance

@@jjames2162 I have been building, and painting GM products since 1976 and retired in 2008, and I love Gm products. Nothing beats a Corvette for performance for the dollar. Nothing touches V model Cadillacs ect, ect. An American, mind you, named Edward's Demings went to Japan through out the 50s, 60s, and 70s and taught the Japanese how to manufacture cars with the team concept theory and continuous improvement theory and other innovative concepts which brought the Japanese into a world class builder and since the late 80s all auto manufacturers started managing there companies in the Edward Demings management philosophy. All companies are very comparable in reliability and quality today or they would have died like America motors Corp. Or Pontiac, or Saturn or AMC corp. And many others. Wake up and do your home work about the WHOLE auto industry today vs yesterday.

@@jjames2162 actually not true. GM pickups are very reliable. Many millions more made than Toyota pickups so yes, numerically more problems but I run a construction company with experience with hundreds of vehicles. I have Chevy Suburbans with over 500,000+ miles used vary hard. I have Chevy pickups and vans with 300,000+ no problems. I’ve owned Toyotas and yes they are, generally reliable. But they are also over rated because they truly have a cult like following mostly in California and progressive left states

@@bret9741 to suggest Toyota drivers are politically associated with either party is ridiculous. I think you are probably full of shit based on that alone. However ever GM owner I know has had issues. My ex has a GM pickup and it is far less quality than my RAM. GM has ranked low on the reliability scale mostly due to engine and transmission issues

A lot of reviews mention the plastic dash and door panels. Im still driving a 2010 Canyon and it has the same thing. but, even after 14 years it looks like new. it is not a cheap material. it is intentional and its actually good for a truck.

You don’t have to dive into a menu in order to change the headlights, the button is always at the top of the infotainment display and never goes anywhere. I wouldn’t choose the Tacoma over this if it received an emergency refresh that fixed its’ styling and the price dropped several grand. I’d still choose a ZR2 or this canyon over the Toyota. Hands down!

My 2024 Canyon Elevation (1150 miles) has been in the shop for almost 2 weeks now. Roof dented from the car wash blower (known issue) and there are 2 oil leaks, one of which involves dropping the transmission to fix. A part needed is on backorder. There have also been other issues, such as mis-aligned doors and warning lights activating such as the adaptive cruise control and check engine. I have asked GMC to replace the truck, and they have told me to pound sand.

I think reliability between the major brands is more alike than different, despite what any given fanboy well tell you. I've had a couple F150s, Tahoes & Subarbans, and (most recently) a Ranger for work cars. These were law enforcement vehicles with tons of idle time and lots of hard driving. Barring theb Ranger (it was still pretty new), they all did 125k+ miles with no issues. The Ranger, however, feels very cheap. It's noisy (both road noise and engine noise). I just traded my 2017 Tacoma OR in for a 2023 Canyon AT4X. The ride is no comparison to any of the other trucks I've driven. It's so much more refined. I was on a list for a 2024 TRD Pro, but had no clue when it would actually come in, what color is be, ect. That, couple with the fact that it would likely cost as much or more than the Edition 1 AT4X that I bought, which is equipped with all the hardware that is have to add to the Pro, the decision was easy. Like days above, GMC is often underrated, generally by those who have zero experience with them and who are too closed-minded to actually recognize the ratings, equipment and prices objectively.

I would drive a 5 year old GM with roughly 100,000 kms or 60,000 miles. Then drive an Equivalent Toyota. Suddenly you determine why quality matters and resale represent that. I’m not a Toyota die hard especially with how dealers have treated their loyal customers. Just can’t argue with the difference between GM, Ford, Dodge and Toyota when you compare the quality after these trucks are well used.

With all the new tech and complicated turbo/hybrid systems I have a feeling Toyota will hold value more than ever. Like I said I’m no Toyota fan boy but their reputation for reliability and low maintenance give confidence to those that must buy used and after warranty. GM offers amazing value but as I said the more complicated these trucks become the more reputation for reliability and low operating costs will matter. If buying to own or lease for 3-5 years who cares. If buying to own for 5-15 years it’s a whole different story.

The Tacoma engine is again one of the worst power wise unless you get a TRD Pro, or pay for the engine upgrade to the hybrid. Not sure why the base 2.4l turbo puts out such low numbers though. It does slightly beat the base Ranger engine with it's extra 0.1L. The Toyota Hybrid does offer the most torque on a mid size unless Ford releases their Ranger PHEV that is rumored to be coming to the US. Would be nice if GMC had additional offerings which I'm sure they might add one on the 2026. But GMC does come with the best base engine option. I'm torn between the Canyon and new Ranger. I'd love the Raptor but probably won't find one without paying 10k+ over msrp. Might also wait for the new 2.7L later in 2024 and just get a Lariat Fx4 with it.

Whether some vehicles have it, it is still not a good idea, in my opinion. 😊
