Owner of a 23 IS500 here. Was on the verge of getting an m340i but that 2UR-GSE engine from the IS500 was the difference maker for me! The refined and rich tone of the IS500 displays the soul of the car. I agree with the fact the m340i is a quicker car but I believe the IS500 is a car all about feeling: sonorous sound, raw accessible power, and an old school driving experience.

I've owned my 2024 IS 500 for about 3 weeks now. I love it. Driving around town, ripping backroads, and cruising the highway is all perfect. I took a 4 hour drive to GA last week and it was so comfortable & got 26 mpg in "Normal" mode. At home I drive Sport + with no traction control and the paddle shifters. This thing screams! It covers everything. Reliable, great build quality, PHYSICAL BUTTONS! amazing sound system, and smoke show burnouts whenever you want. I don't regret this purchase over the BMW at all and I know I'll be driving it just as hard in 10 years.

It's hilarious how people hate on Lexus for having an "outdated" interior and infotainment when in reality it's built to last forever without causing the owner to pay thousands in repair bills for a massive touch screen like the BMW that is most likely prone to break after a couple years.

The BMW does make a great starter car, used, because of the huge depreciation. You can’t go wrong with a MK5 supra powertrain for a fraction of the price. But the 2UR-GSE NA V8 is a tuner’s wet dream. Dare I call it the “V8 2J”

I have an IS500... you should look at different tires and exhaust. I put a Borla and Conti DWS06+... I would have gone Extreme Contact 2 or Pilot Sport but we occasionally get snow

Not correct, the Lexus wins in at least 3 more categories: Reliabily, Replacement parts cost, Depreciation value. Probably even more than that. Also it is something to note that Lexus doesn't toy with the latest and greatest tech and immediately put it in their cars like BMW and others. They wait until the tech is refined, reliable and working to expectations before implementing new tech thus lowering your ownership costs because you are not the guinea pigs.

I was torn between the two coming from a 21' IS350. The 500 is basically the same vehicle with a V8. After driving the 25' M340 I think I made the right decision for myself. The B58 rips. Both awesome vehicles regardless.

The BMW and the LEXUS are both fine cars but they BOTH cater to a different type of buyer. The BMW is a sportier and faster car that is geared towards the younger buyer while the LEXUS is a more of a throw back geared towards the older crowd. Just my 2 cents

I feel like the IS500 would've been an amazing sports car if it wasn't made by Lexus. From the bland (but comfortable) interior to the muted exhaust note. It checks so many boxes, but still manages to fall short. They prioritized comfort and completely neutered the excitement and "fun" factor. I was considering this car at one point, more so because of the design (which I think they knocked out of the park), but then reconsidered after realizing the IS350 is 90% of the experience at almost 50% the cost.

Have you ever driven one in a performance setting? We got a hot lap in one around Daytona Raceway and it blew my mind. It was all stock expect for an aftermarket suspension and it ripped! It's a fun car in the higher rpm range.

Lovely comparison :) BUT B58 I6 which is in the M340i is miles ahead of ancient sweet sounding NA V8 IS500. B58 is loved for reasons being smooth, quiet, fast and fuel efficient. Used in sports cars to large offroad vehicles and flagship X7. It's crazy one engine can satisfy all categories - won multiple awards and even car journalists drool over a BMW when equipped with one. SavageGeese's hosts can't stop praising this powertrain with the 8 speed ZF auto gearbox. Lexus might hold it's value better, but the tuner + aftermarket support is not even close to B58.

Had the personal choice and went with the BMW. I think another interesting aspect is that with the IS500 - I went to Johnson Lexus in Raleigh and Durham and was informed that the wait time for these is like over 1 year and that Lexus sends out pre-specd IS500s to dealerships that they choose and that we cannot choose what options I want. I thought for the price it was unacceptable. BMW was giving me the exact options I wanted from factory within 3-6 months. It was a no brainer for me.

For the people complaining about the lack of infortainment and tech on the Lexus. Think about fast forwarding 10 15 years. Both will be outdated by then but iDrive 8 will be a fucking disaster to deal with. EVERYTHING is in the screen. It sounds good now. But in the future we will be praising the Lexus. We will be saying how perfect it is with the old tech for the model year.

BMW 340i Quicker car, handles better. Better technology systems. Quicker Transmission. Worse maintenance costs. Depreciates quickly. Better Tuning potential. Lexus IS 500 More reliable, better build quality. Old technology, old school car type vibe. NA V8 Sounds. Slower car, slower transmission, more luxury and comfort focused. Maintenance cost isn't as bad as BMW. Holds its value. Both are good cars. Just depends on what you want. If I were to get a 340i, I'd probably buy a used one just because it depreciates so quick. 35-40k BMW m340i is a good deal for me. IS500 if I plan on owning it for a long time.

The M340 and 330 are exactly the same in terms of speed limiter, they also share the same tire sizes (225 front, 225 or 255 rear depending on all season vs performance tires). I know this for sure only because I spent way too much time researching this when ordering my car I also don't think a stock M340 can hit 180mph even with the limiter removed

@ I have a CT4vbw manual and if wish I had picked up a 330i M-sport and then cycled through fun cars. 330 kind of a day to day “beater” to haul kids and park at the airport. Plus remote start would be nice right about now.😅 I test drove a 330i and 340i back to back after selling my F80 M3 and felt the 330i was a bit more fun. Slower, yes but you can feel the lighter front end.

Yes, but the BMW is nowhere near as reliable as the Lexus. And that matters as the car industry shifts to hybrid and fully electric. You'll be able to keep the Lexus for decades whereas with the BMW you'll be lucky if you get 5 good years out of it before you start spending a small fortune in maintenance costs. And by that time, there won't be many options for a new internal combustion powered car.
