There's nothing better than a great steak dinner at a traditional steakhouse. I recall back in Las Vegas, I got a chance to visit many great steakhouses; from the Iconic Peter Luger's to the traditional classic Oscar's Steakhouse.
Well, I'm back in Vancouver and as the cold weather is moving in, there's nothing like getting together with some friend over a great steak dinner. This would a be a great opportunity to explore the great steakhouses in the city and it would be fun to find see what the difference is between a causal steakhouse with that of a high-end, fine dining steakhouse. Now, don't get me wrong, casual doesn't mean inexpensive...steaks and beef are expensive whether it's casual or not.
I got to dine with my good friend Nicole as we first started exploring a casual steak spot call The Keg here in Canada... Will it compare to those in Vegas? It will be fun and fulfilling to find out!
Best known for a think juicy prime rib, The Keg certainly didn't disappoint. We did stick to what they are known for... The prime rib of course, french onion soup, some crab cakes, ice cream pie... before you know it, we over-ordered... And while it was a hit and miss on some items, we decided that with al the food we had, we needed to enlist some help for the next day at the High-end Steakhouse experience.
Enter James, who was gracious enough to help us tackle our mega steak meal and this time, it is at a high-end / fine dining spot known as Hy's Steakhouse. With the added help, we thought could have ordered more, and we did! From the table side prepared Caesar salad and the steak tartare, to the best oysters Rockefeller I've ever tasted, we over-ordered once again.. and that was just the appetizers. Steaks include a table side prepared and flambé'ed steak Diane, a thick juicy porterhouse and the flavourful dry-ages prime rib.
Oh, and did I forget? We enjoyed great steakhouse burgers from both establishments! Thanks a ag great tip from the folks at Peter Luger's, getting a burger at a steakhouse is a pro tip. You get a trimmings and cuts from all the great steaks without the high cost.
A great experience all in all and it certainly filled our bellies and emptied our wallets.

The service at the first restaurant was TOO FAST. They needed to give you some time to eat your appetizers before bringing the burger. Just sayin'. Also those crab cakes... awful, you were very generous.The prime rib, mashies and mushrooms looked AMAZING, though! The high end place????? Bucket list meal, for sure! Tim, Fasting for a couple of days maybe a week. In my younger years, 5 decades ago, I fasted often. 30 days was my longest. Then from 21 days to a week. Eventually just a weekend per month. Worked out insanely. Was in great condition. Have a Great Day. Best

The Keg is popular in the greater Toronto area. The burgers, full size and slider, you can get in local grocery stores. Love their whiskey sour…good bar mix. The food is good. Billy Miner ice cream pie thing is popular.

Tim I wish I could take you for a tour of Toronto. My favourite Keg location is the Keg Mansion in Toronto. It is an historic building that used to be owned by the Massey family (at the time the most powerful family). There was a murder there of one of the heirs after he somehow attack/ approached a young servant. Apparently there is also a ghost living there - so many stories (not just steak)! 😳🥩🔪

Pass on both, especially the higher priced restaurant. All cheap ingredients, sold at a price that does not fit. As for the more expensive side, I'm a Texas steakhouse woman. No frills. Just a great slab of grass-fed beef and a nice baked potato. However, you are always humble and a joy to watch, Tim. Thank you!

Tim, I feel like when people dine at a ateakhouse, it is also very important that the sides be just as good as the appetizers, the entree itself and the dessert. Even the coffee should be flavorful to top off the meal. It would be great if you could rate those as well. Not to be too critical, but passable is not a helpful rating to me. If I am going to pay the high price of a steakhouse, I prefer ratings on a scale of 1 to 5 or 10 to help me decide whether the restaurant is worth the trip. Thanks!

As long as it's steak and grilled over wood or charcoal I;m eating it. I dont frequent Peter Luger's or Ruth Chris because they use hot ovens/gas no wood or charcoal. Their gas broilers average 850-1500 degrees which give the meat a nice crust but it just cant beat that real smoked hardwood flavor. As always enjoyed the video very much!

I have to respectfully disagree for some categories and here are my reasons why. Just a bit of a background I regularly eat at both establishments and in different locations in Canada. 1. The keg's primerib was compared to Hy's steak which could be a mismatch. Have to compare steak with steak. For value, I feel the steak's at the keg are better than hy's based on the price and value alone. 2. Dessert I will agree with the keg trumps Hy's. 3. The bread at Hy's is definitely better. Overall I do agree with your assessment of the keg vs. hy's, one for causal and the other for special occasions, however, I believe for special occasions there are MUCH better high end restaurants than Hy's. The Keg however, I feel is one of the better value chains for steak in Canada and tastes great.

250 dollars is expensive ..jeeez , I am Norwegian and everything in my country is extremely expensive and even I think that is very expensive. a little bit misleading with the prices in your video tile here Tim , the first meal was split between 2 and was 125 pr person , the second meal split by 3 was 333 pr person

From my experience although Hy's is more expensive it is nowhere near 4x the price of the Keg. I think you didn't really compare similar orders. Also you should check out Jacobs in Toronto

Yeah, I think they had an off night in the kitchen because when we go there before, it was quite good. Nicole’s portion was actually very burnt on the other side, so it wasn’t edible. If we were eating, normally, we would have commented about that

I love the onion soup at The Keg but why not compare that to the onion soup at Hy's. As for cooking methods, I am sure you know Tim that a prime rib is a roast and not a steak so you really can't compare the two restaurants. Hy's doesn't even serve a prime rib. Btw, not every Keg location is as good as the other...Coquitlam and Surrey are great! I found the decor at Hy's dark and dingy with those weird looking paintings LOL. Enjoy yourself.

Yeah, we had that some discussion at the table about getting the same things after we made the order. By that time, it was too late and we didn’t order any more 😉…. Yeah, Hy’s is like a dark castle theme. Emphasis on the dark as it was hard to edit the video😉

Once again Tim loved the video I was as Hy’s in Hawaii As well as the one in Calgary You should come to Calgary and try it Or better yet come here so you can go to the Longview Steakhouse That place is the best if you book now you can get a table by July That how long it is until my reservation and I booked it two weeks ago But it’s well worth it Come down and I can slide you in on my reservation That would be awesome

@@TimLeeLetsGo That's for all. I know the Keg & Hy's. At Keg just this week and 5 people overindulged and tax & tip $500 range. Keg valuewise one of the best chains you'll ever find. Garlic Mashed & double baked Potatoes are great, prime rib very good as are all their steaks.
