Scrapwood. It’s something woodworkers accumulate as a natural part of the woodworking process. Even though the pieces are hard to incorporate into larger projects, there’s still a LOT of value in them and it’s a good idea to come up with small projects that can make good use of the stuff. That’s exactly what I had in mind when I created these small elegant jewelry boxes. And while the project appears simple, you’ll see that it does require attention to detail and precision. Even small projects deserve your best effort! So let’s dig in!

Thanks Marc, Since watching this 2 years ago,, I have made about two dozen of these from various pieces of scrap wood. They sell out quickly at a Christmas fair to support a school for autistic children a not-for-profit elder care community. These beauties go for between $40 and $60 depending upon the wood. My favorites are made of beautiful bubinga with maple sides. I’m about to make a dozen more for this year’s fair.

older video, but still useful! a comment regarding the barrel hinges though. i've used them for years, if you drill the holes with a 5 mm brad point, they are a snug pushin fit and i have never glued them in! Lee Valley has a 5mm brad point and its perfect for the hinges

If anybody have that many tools to just make a wooden box, he/she never needs a video like this. it simply learned these methods way back during tool acquiring. by the way nice boxes.

i saw this video about a month or 2 ago and decided to make one as a gift to a friend since I Have a bunch of spare wood around from building guitars. My table saw was busted so I had to improvise with a router for some of it, but it turned out really good. I used some european ash for the box with brazillian mahogany for the sides. Love the website with all the plans on it for easy reference instead of having to rewatch the video a thousand times over to see what you did and get the measurements 😅

*TopFineWoodworking. Com* is a fantastic website about wood working. I took various classes as well as finished a one year diploma in carpentry at a local tech college; this is much better than any book I worked out of during those lessons. It explains everything regarding woodworking as well as complements it with helpful photos.?

Super project. Will have to make a couple of these for gifts. I might modify the design to make a deeper box - instead of plowing out 8/4 stock (I don't have a lot of that laying around) you could just do a miter joint between the front, back and bottom to make whatever depth you want. Finished product should come out more or less the same, yeah? Thank you.

Some cool boxes Marc! I like how the design can be varied and those hinges are cool. Using the jack plane to create the curves caught my eye as I used a similar technique some years back using a block plane to help create some gentle curves (I didn't have a jack at the time). - Jim

Thanks for the video, great project idea. I have to add a word of warning to everyone, some painters tape is not rated to be on laquer and will ruin it. Shellac is also similarly vulnerable so make sure you carefully read the details on the tape and pick the right stuff!

I can't remember if it was mentioned in the video, but I'll put it out here anyway. I think a good tip is also to finish the wood first before applying the flock adhesive. Once tested it on a piece of unfinished simple ply wood which soaked the adhesive right in. Result... a very unevenly flocked test piece.
