I can relate to staying on top of keeping the road maintained or walls of snow tend to close in on you. I’m in Utah and at 7900 ft, my ‘07 Dodge 1500 with an 8 ft Western does great even in a fairly steep incline in sections. All 4 tires chained and about 600 lbs of weight in the back (shell top) does the trick. Once you figure out what works for your situation, rinse and repeat. Stay on top of the snow and the winter won’t be so bitter. This year has been an aggressive snow fall so far and it’s just beginning. More snow on the way and I’m just east of you. The beauty of this part of the world is worth the extra effort, if one is prepared.

I insulated my place with mineral wool, basically roxul. Not sure if you are doing walls or ceiling or both with it. I highly recommend making sure your wires to switches and outlets are right angle bends. I was a bit anal about making sure my pieces were perfectly snug and no air gaps, but any wire I ran that was at an angle was a custom cut into the mineral wool to fit the insulation around the wire. As you know mineral wool doesn't squish down much at all, nor go around a receptacle box like fiberglass or cellulose. Looking great, I loved this stage of building.

Woke up 10 degrees outside , walked the pooch, she did her business and hurried back to the front door. Changing a radiator out there ...ah no. A shop with well fitting insulated Garage door, a creeper to stay off the ground and wood stove seems a must. If I’ve learned anything comfort makes any task less taxing. Your work effort is admirable as is your commitment to a debt free lifestyle. I’m sure your kids have learned a great lesson from it- Even if it doesn’t appear so. If you can swing it a shop!

Had an idea for heat up in the water tank shed from seeing what a lot of van/truck campers are doing in the form of the cheap china diesel forced air heaters. Would need a 12vdc source up there but that can be a cheap solar setup along with a tank for heating oil/off road diesel to last a couple of months up there. As you are only trying to keep the tank above 32 could easily set the heater for 40 to help keep the place from freezing up. And a fun idea would be to have the unit placed so the exhaust is just under the solar panel/s keeping them from getting a snow pack on them along with keeping the path clear to not choke the system. Yes the ones that heat coolant would be better but don't think $1,500+ is in the budget for a backup system

Old Chevys are like Harley-Davidsons, you have to tighten or repair something on a regular basis. At least in my experience. I had a 75 one time that ended up about 60% new in the first year I had it, then I had to replace the first thing again. I had had enough at that point, and took it up to the old abandoned cow pasture and set it off with 6 sticks of dynamite. I immediately went back to Ford. I've had a few Dodge truck/vans as well, and they consistently left me sitting on the side of the road. If Chevy and their high maintenance schedule works for you, go for it. I'll stock with what I've had better luck with. (In trucks) my best car ever for dependability was a 1968 Chevy Bel-air 4 door. I-6, monojet, two speed power-glide trans. Great MPG and never left me on the side of the road or needed much maintanence. My ex got it in the divorce, 😢😭😢😭😠😠😠

Snow Snow Everywhere & we've not seen a lick of it here, ...thank heavens. You are moving right along. Great how you are so well rounded with different skills - what a blessing. I feel blessed in that regard too, but working long hours in my 20s and on, it was just easier and cheaper to have it done. So now in my 60s, getting back into it for self-sufficiency reasons, doesn't enthuse me alot - grease, grim, busted knuckles, and the work goes slowly. In my 20s was my pre-Christian, drinking days, and my rule then for working on a vehicle was to start drinking one hour before I started, then have at least one beer every hour. That always made that very frustrating work much easier, and less intense - ...And oddly I don't really remember it causing lots of mistakes; ...oh well. Funny to look back on - but real glad not have that ethanol monkey on my back anymore. Praise Jesus!

IE thermostat plenum wire to the corners of the house next to the lights and bring them down perhaps into the utility room. so you can put in loud speakers on the corners up under the eves, you could use something as easy as a CB radio with the PA switch turned on or add some newfangled video camera doorbells also.. you can get Par 46 bulbs that have wireless cameras in them already.

Good call on the radiator, overheating can be such a pain in the behind on an older vehicle, so just putting in a new rad is a good call. How's the hand? I recently smashed my thumb with a hammer, not nearly the injury you had but every time I need to use that had (I'm a carpenter) it is a painful reminder of how much I rely on my hands, I feed my family with these two hands, must take care of them. The house is looking good, I bet you will really turn a corner when you put that insulation in there, it will be so much warmer! Love the videos, take care. Cheers from Tokyo!

Hard well water with high mineral content shouldn't be used especially for a new radiator. That's how the old radiator gave out. Some litres of pure water for batteries cost just fraction of a new radiator. Or u could just melt down some clean fresh snow. Your anti-freeze radiator coolant will also melt the snow almost instantly.

I'm sure that you already know this but most may or may not and do it anyway but when adding water to the radiator you should always use distilled water. hard water is probably 99% of all cooling issues when it comes to vehicles, it plugs up the radiator and heater core pretty bad and then you're back to the same problem. And at less than $1 per gallon it's actually pretty cheap preventive maintenance. good vid!

You should have used distilled water in that radiator. The minerals in regular water lower the boiling point and also corrode the aluminum radiator.
@marcryvon6 жыл бұрын
Sorry but wrong. It's been proven that distilled water, thus with no minerals content may/will ruin your cooling system, trying to restablish it's natural minerals content. It corrodes the rad, pump and engine passages. Best is tap water with no chlorine content.
