I once tried defending a song artist that my friend said sucked and immediately when I started to defend the artist, she said, "I'm not in the mood" I was just making a claim and she was hating on me for no reason. I literally started crying afterward, trying to figure out what I did wrong.
@EricaDLucas8 ай бұрын
@@HandleTakenYA You don't have to justify your likes or interests to other people. If your friend thinks a song/artist you like sucks, that's okay and you shouldn't try to convince them that they're wrong; they have a right to have an opinion. Now if they're actively trying to put you down by making fun of your tastes or trying to seem superior, the best thing you can do is not give a f. Do YOU like it? Then what matters what your friend thinks? You can live your life trying to justify all your tastes to bitter people who find pleasure in hating on things, or you can just ignore them and keep on gleefully consuming your interests, no matter how "objectively bad" or "good" they are

I have seen people do that kind of thing and then show me something awesome and I've been excited to give credit where it's due. I think, like another comment said, it's about the amount of hype he built for such a low quality song. The song itself isn't even the worst in the world. @Bean-hz8jo6 ай бұрын
Yeah, especially with the alt crowd, theres often some innate importance placed on the fact that the music doesnt "exist to be popular". That's not a good thing, thats not a bad thing, it just is. Sometimes you end up with a bunch of people "gatekeeping" their favorite bands because they don't want them to get mainstream, but I think at it's core it's about wanting music to be kind of its own and authentic. Marketing a song to that community by going "this is gonna be a HIT!" is not exactly thought out..

Danny being honest but not needlessly cruel is such a nice thing to see, I feel like a lot of people who focus on commentary try too hard to justify their criticism instead of keeping a fair balance and end up being a bit excessive in an attempt to overcompensate. Good video, hopefully this dude can learn from it. (I think the most important thing to learn from these days is the point about giving people a reaction. Even smaller artists I follow run into this problem where they try to be accommodating and instead people use it as opportunity to dogpile accusations or guilt them into only creating content that person wants to see.)

I was really heavy in the pop punk scene in high school and this guy reminds me of a lot of the people I used to hang out with. I feel that starting that tiktok with “is this the next emo anthem” was the biggest mistake. Any bold statements like that and the like of “if you like MCR you’ll love my band” are destined to not work with the emo crowd. The alternative scene was born out of not liking what everyone else likes, not being who everyone else is, by not fitting in so making it obvious that we don’t fit in. Tell us you made a song you think we might enjoy, that represents your view on the scene. That’ll get way more positive attention. Sure people can be pricks and you’ll never escape the negative comments but I believe there would be way less if it was done a different way

Never heard about this until now and I just listened to it. It sounds like Kings and Queens by 30 Seconds to Mars if it were watered down, filtered to the bare bones of lyrical writing, and also sung by Shane Dawson. In fact the choruses almost seems identical in melody if you listen to them multiple times. Which isn’t bad per se, he just needs to develop a bit more of his own sound that fits his vocals in a better way.

I was just about to comment saying the same thing, especially the "We are the princes and princesses of..." being almost exactly the same as Thirty Seconds to Mars' "We are the kings and queens of..." down to having nearly the same melody. Pretty sure that was a big part of his downfall, making a song trying to emulate an another already popular song (even if he didn't consciously mean to) instead of making music that was truly "his".

Right.. Which is why I like to fond good things even on art thats not my taste, or even on newer beginner artists. Thats what makes them go forward and be better, if the creator is neutral, or kind, just find something to make them feel proud of their works, after all, it still takes a lot of time, and there are tons of love poured into it. I don't think a lot of people think about how disproportionate it is to rag on him this hard for so little. They just saw him feeling himself and his song and decided to knock him down. ALSO. The culture of just ruthlessly knocking on people or cringing at them is so exhaustingly negative and it's also like... discouraging anyone from trying things or sharing them if they can't be instantly popular or monetized or perfect beyond reproach. Very cool to see a more down to earth and chill commentary

Especially compare to how good actual "emo anthem" are like mother mother, choke, set it off, etc compare to his songs. He wants to be unique but it sounds like a mess, the point of a good song isn't to be unique it's to sound good. If it's main goal is just to stand out then it's not gonna be good. i think the biggest problem with the guy's music is he seems like a rhythm guitarist, the type that learned music through singing over acoustic guitar. which is great! but you cant always just take something that sounds good with acoustic guitar and vocals, slam it out on electric, and then sing louder and hope it works. ill bet you ANYTHING he composes on acoustic guitar, relying on his more practiced skills. i do that too, but it's not exactly easy to write electric guitar pieces with an acoustic instrument. that acoustic ballad version of the song is great because the guitar and vocals work together to create a flow. in the electric one, hes using power chords, and longer notes, and he doesnt change the vocals. it just creates an awkward mismatch and it makes it sound like he's singing off tempo. just one notch better at making music, like danny said, and this guy would have it in the bag! he's just missing the mark a little bit on the genre and on a consistent genre, instrument to instrument.

If he released TikToks about his process of writing and recording *other* songs, it wouldn’t come across as so defensive, and he could actually seem to progress as a creator. The biggest mistake he could've ever done was say "Did I make the newest emo anthem?" because it immediately got himself to be compared to the likes of MCR or PaTD and have his starting song be compared to The Black Parade, which... No, nothing can really be compared to that album nor its most infamous song. It's not just because the song feels like it's going off of scene music rather than emo punk rock, it's also because it's not... unique? Or out there, in terms of the emo nor scene genres. I think he definitely has opportunity. If he were to go back to his laid-back and grounded self and made his own style, I think he'll be able to find his own community. Another piece of criticism I would give him is that he needs to change the way he styled that music video of his if he wants people to stop calling his song kids' music. The animation/editing is good, but the bright-colored paper cutout style makes it look very much like something that would be played at a 5th-grader's birthday party in a bowling alley. It doesn't even need to be animated. The song is very upbeat, so I would imagine a darker setting, like a rave or something, might give it that darker emo tone he seems to want.

I've had someone hate on a drawing of mine, and even though that didn't make me dislike it I still felt bad about the whole situation I think the way he handled it was pretty good, he's still human after all and honestly I have nothing bad to say about him Especially being autistic I know what it's like having everything you enjoy being jugded by others and considered cringe, maybe I'm just projecting but all I see is a guy trying to have fun and share his art

Not trying to pick a fight with you, because I agree with your premise- just trying to explain where the hate came from. The problem (mainly) was that he seemed to think his song was going to become "the next emo anthem", when it is so far from the emo genre. It's too bright and peppy to be an "emo" song, let alone an anthem. So he p.o.'d a bunch of very passionate people (seemingly on purpose) by, in their eyes, insulting the genre of music they liked. He was disrespectful to the emo demographic, which is why so many people got angry at him. Basically, he decided he was going to provoke a group that's not exactly known for its positive response to outsiders and posers. To quote Tony Stark, "Not a great plan." Again, not trying to start anything; there are just smarter ways to share your art that don't involve hate-baiting.
