I agree with what you're saying about constructive criticism however a lot of these people were just being mean they could have given the guy real advice instead of just bashing him think about if you wrote your first song and we're already shy about releasing it or uncertain of yourself and then all these people started bashing you this is the type of thing that drives people to commit suicide I know it sounds like a stupid thing to do that over but it has happened in young people when their community turns on them especially for something so dumb

I know obviously this is directed at a very specific person, but that "You can't change their mind by overexplaining why you do something" is some really good advice I feel like I need to take to heart that I've never heard from anyone before.

I once tried defending a song artist that my friend said sucked and immediately when I started to defend the artist, she said, "I'm not in the mood" I was just making a claim and she was hating on me for no reason. I literally started crying afterward, trying to figure out what I did wrong.
@EricaDLucas
@EricaDLucas 8 ай бұрын
@@HandleTakenYA You don't have to justify your likes or interests to other people. If your friend thinks a song/artist you like sucks, that's okay and you shouldn't try to convince them that they're wrong; they have a right to have an opinion. Now if they're actively trying to put you down by making fun of your tastes or trying to seem superior, the best thing you can do is not give a f. Do YOU like it? Then what matters what your friend thinks? You can live your life trying to justify all your tastes to bitter people who find pleasure in hating on things, or you can just ignore them and keep on gleefully consuming your interests, no matter how "objectively bad" or "good" they are

I agree but I think if he'd have dropped the most insane fire anyone had ever heard people might've actually been into it. I have seen people do that kind of thing and then show me something awesome and I've been excited to give credit where it's due. I think, like another comment said, it's about the amount of hype he built for such a low quality song. The song itself isn't even the worst in the world. It's not great and I don't enjoy it but some of the melodic intervals are at least interesting and I could see someone liking it. But he started off being kind of annoying with that question and then didn't shock people with the high quality of it lol

I think one of the big things is his declaration that it's going to be successful before playing that. That primes your alt crowd to immediately be suspicious. The song isn't actually bad, it's just not a hit.
@Bean-hz8jo
@Bean-hz8jo 6 ай бұрын
Yeah, especially with the alt crowd, theres often some innate importance placed on the fact that the music doesnt "exist to be popular". That's not a good thing, thats not a bad thing, it just is. Sometimes you end up with a bunch of people "gatekeeping" their favorite bands because they don't want them to get mainstream, but I think at it's core it's about wanting music to be kind of its own and authentic. Marketing a song to that community by going "this is gonna be a HIT!" is not exactly thought out..

Great, constructive vid! I was surprised no one brought it up in the TikTok comments, but the song clip he’s using is eerily similar to the chorus of ”Kings & Queens” by Thirty Seconds To Mars, with ”Kings & Queens” being changed to ”princes & princesses”. Even if that’s a reference on purpose it’s too close for comfort. As you said, the rest of the song is also better! He’s got great potential for sure.

Danny being honest but not needlessly cruel is such a nice thing to see, I feel like a lot of people who focus on commentary try too hard to justify their criticism instead of keeping a fair balance and end up being a bit excessive in an attempt to overcompensate. Good video, hopefully this dude can learn from it. (I think the most important thing to learn from these days is the point about giving people a reaction. Even smaller artists I follow run into this problem where they try to be accommodating and instead people use it as opportunity to dogpile accusations or guilt them into only creating content that person wants to see.)

I was really heavy in the pop punk scene in high school and this guy reminds me of a lot of the people I used to hang out with. The internal conflict of not caring about fitting in with the mainstream and desperately wanting the approval of the pop punk/emo community is a huge part of the culture and if you're not immediately beloved and accepted within the community, it's easy to fall into this sort of cringe defensiveness. I feel like that's a little true for every creator, but it's a huge issue in the pop punk community / music scene

Punk is supposed to be about bucking the mainstream, being weird and coming as you are, but then within THAT group you have to conform to what everyone agrees is acceptable weirdness or you become even more hated. It’s pretty messed up. Realizing you don’t fit into the norm, thinking you might have found a group of people who feel the same as you, finally letting your guard down and exposing your weirdness to that group - only to then be told you’re the wrong kind of weird.. fuck man.

I feel that starting that tiktok with “is this the next emo anthem” was the biggest mistake. Any bold statements like that and the like of “if you like MCR you’ll love my band” are destined to not work with the emo crowd. The alternative scene was born out of not liking what everyone else likes, not being who everyone else is, by not fitting in so making it obvious that we don’t fit in. Tell us you made a song you think we might enjoy, that represents your view on the scene. That’ll get way more positive attention. Sure people can be pricks and you’ll never escape the negative comments but I believe there would be way less if it was done a different way

Oh you're right!!XD Maybe because it mentions princes and princesses the imagined ages are primary school ages? That would make it make more sense because if the song's about how life isn't as great as it was during childhood being a young person just starting to grow up (I'm assuming his audience includes teenagers) is the time during which a lot of people start to learn more about the grey areas of the world and how nothing is so cookie-cutter and great as you once thought it to be.

Right! I think a lot of people have seen how soul sucking and damaging the dog piles and "joking" insults can be, and are just coming to a more empathetic place where the vibe is like... you do you, man. I think a lot of people didn't like what they were becoming either. The toxicity also means no one really feels safe expressing themselves or sharing or growing, so it's also suffocating and discouraging to be around.

Never heard about this until now and I just listened to it. It sounds like Kings and Queens by 30 Seconds to Mars if it were watered down, filtered to the bare bones of lyrical writing, and also sung by Shane Dawson. In fact the choruses almost seems identical in melody if you listen to them multiple times. Which isn’t bad per se, he just needs to develop a bit more of his own sound that fits his vocals in a better way.

Pretty sure that was a big part of his downfall, making a song trying to emulate an another already popular song (even if he didn't consciously mean to) instead of making music that was truly "his".

Which is why I like to fond good things even on art thats not my taste, or even on newer beginner artists. Thats what makes them go forward and be better, if the creator is neutral, or kind, just find something to make them feel proud of their works, after all, it still takes a lot of time, and there are tons of love poured into it. I don't think a lot of people think about how disproportionate it is to rag on him this hard for so little. They just saw him feeling himself and his song and decided to knock him down. ALSO. The culture of just ruthlessly knocking on people or cringing at them is so exhaustingly negative and it's also like... discouraging anyone from trying things or sharing them if they can't be instantly popular or monetized or perfect beyond reproach. Especially compare to how good actual "emo anthem" are like mother mother, choke, set it off, etc compare to his songs. He wants to be unique but it sounds like a mess, the point of a good song isn't to be unique it's to sound good. If it's main goal is just to stand out then it's not gonna be good. i think the biggest problem with the guy's music is he seems like a rhythm guitarist, the type that learned music through singing over acoustic guitar. which is great! but you cant always just take something that sounds good with acoustic guitar and vocals, slam it out on electric, and then sing louder and hope it works. ill bet you ANYTHING he composes on acoustic guitar, relying on his more practiced skills. i do that too, but it's not exactly easy to write electric guitar pieces with an acoustic instrument. that acoustic ballad version of the song is great because the guitar and vocals work together to create a flow. in the electric one, hes using power chords, and longer notes, and he doesnt change the vocals. it just creates an awkward mismatch and it makes it sound like he's singing off tempo. just one notch better at making music, like danny said, and this guy would have it in the bag! he's just missing the mark a little bit on the genre and on a consistent genre, instrument to instrument.

I think a big part is that he’s pushing the one song as if he’s an established artist with a new single, as opposed to an enthusiastic unsigned artist. If he released TikToks about his process of writing and recording *other* songs, it wouldn’t come across as so defensive, and he could actually seem to progress as a creator. Going for a “hey, what do you think of this new chorus/lyric/idea” would allow for him to react to feedback, as opposed to spending his time trying to argue about the qualities of his finished song.

The biggest mistake he could've ever done was say "Did I make the newest emo anthem?" because it immediately got himself to be compared to the likes of MCR or PaTD and have his starting song be compared to The Black Parade, which... No, nothing can really be compared to that album nor its most infamous song. It's not just because the song feels like it's going off of scene music rather than emo punk rock, it's also because it's not... unique? Or out there, in terms of the emo nor scene genres. I think he definitely has opportunity. If he were to go back to his laid-back and grounded self and made his own style, I think he'll be able to find his own community. I will say, though, TikTok is very prone to harassing people and repeating jokes that aren't funny after the first time. I'm not surprised that happened.

Another piece of criticism I would give him is that he needs to change the way he styled that music video of his if he wants people to stop calling his song kids' music. The animation/editing is good, but the bright-colored paper cutout style makes it look very much like something that would be played at a 5th-grader's birthday party in a bowling alley. It doesn't even need to be animated. The song is very upbeat, so I would imagine a darker setting, like a rave or something, might give it that darker emo tone he seems to want.

Not trying to pick a fight with you, because I agree with your premise- just trying to explain where the hate came from. The problem (mainly) was that he seemed to think his song was going to become "the next emo anthem", when it is so far from the emo genre. It's too bright and peppy to be an "emo" song, let alone an anthem. So he p.o.'d a bunch of very passionate people (seemingly on purpose) by, in their eyes, insulting the genre of music they liked. He was disrespectful to the emo demographic, which is why so many people got angry at him. Basically, he decided he was going to provoke a group that's not exactly known for its positive response to outsiders and posers. To quote Tony Stark, "Not a great plan." Again, not trying to start anything; there are just smarter ways to share your art that don't involve hate-baiting.

And it’s one of his first songs, of course he was going to get hate, he literally wouldn’t get nearly as much hate if he didn’t built it up so much and promoting a ton when he knew people didn’t like it either way

@@randomcrusader5632 but HE likes the song. And obviously there are other people who like the song. Why should he NOT dream big and promote the shit out of something he’s proud of? Just because other people might not like it and he might get hate? I don’t understand the logic here. He should write songs but be super embarrassed of his work and think they’re bad and therefore never promote them or try to get other people interested? That line of thinking is exactly why SO many people NEVER create anything or never share their passions with the world. It might be a little cringe, after all it’s his first attempt, but I think it’s infinitely less cringey than living an entire life afraid to share the things you love with the world because a few people might not love it like you do.

I feel like the main thing that made people immediately go ew wtf at the song in his tiktok was the fact that he announced it so overly confident like the “did I just make the new emo anthem 🤪“ like no you didn’t just say you wrote an ‘emo’ song. Plus idk if I’m just skeptical of him bc of a lot of industry plants have come from TikTok but he gives off industry plant vibes. He gives off Trampstamps vibes ngl

I also genuinely don't think a lot of the people seeing and commenting on his videos about how bad things are really know or like punk or pop punk. Pop punk as a genre is very satirical and campy. Also trying to argue objective goodness and badness in punk is kind of against the essence of what punk is. Is it the best song no but like it is very much pop punk and not as far off from old pop punk stuff than a lot of people might think.

It's so much easier to just, scroll to the next thing and ignore it if you don't like it. These people are more embarrassing imo than the guy they hate on lol. It's pathetic to me, because they either are just genuine twats or they're trying to be the smartass funny type of people, but from my experience those that make agressive jokes can't handle a nice constructive criticism themselves lol. And if you call then out they're being twats they just whine about opinions. Where's the good old "if you don't have anything nice to say, say nothing at all" lol. It's as if they're some important person who's opinion matters to everyone on the internet.

@@parkerknight8738 mostly because he built it up a ton, the songs not bad enough to deserve that much hate, but he went about it like is this the new emo anthem? And he mostly seems like he’s making the song to get popular, not because he actually loves the theme and the sound, he’s being really overtop with it while mostly smaller music creators are more down to earth and humble with it

this reminds me of that one teenage girl who was promoting her music which was the genre “hyper pop” and so… SO many people were full on bullying her. it was awful. sure it’s a “different” type of music and i honestly didnt even like it, but people were mass reporting her music on spotify, getting it taken down.. some people were bullying her irl. i felt awful bro it sucked to see
