If I am not mistaken, it was Longines, who patented the first Chronograph, it was Longines Hour Angle watch, that Lindbergh used, when he made the first flight across the Atlantic .... and it was Longines stop watches that timed Olympic sports events from the beginning of modern games. The Longines watchmaking history goes way back to 1832, nigh on 20 years before Patek Philippe came to existence. There are obviously few differences between movement finishes e.g. Patek watchmakers spend considerably longer time, scallopping and hand polishing movements, which in many instances, are Swatch (Lemania) made movements. Patek throughout their history, have been known to buy complete movements from other watchmakers ... so to me, that devalues the brand, when compared with luxury brands like Breguet, Jaeger LeCoultre, or Girard Perregaux. Longines brand has been around for a long time and unlike Patek Philippe, they have never got bust .... so that must count for something.

I think "affordable" should always be thought of as a comparative, not an absolute. First, a thing can be affordable in relation to your income potential. I currently don't make any money, so I think of an affordable meal as about 3€. My girlfriend makes almost 90k CAD/year so to her, an affordable meal is 20CAD. Second, a thing can be affordable in relation to other things that compete with its purpose. Average rent for a studio in downtown Helsinki is about 900€/month, so if you can find a studio that only costs 750€/month, then that studio is affordable in relation to most other apartments.

Affordable means the price at which a person can make a purchase with ease or without loss of a significant amount of that person's disposable income. These watches are priced at amounts that most people watching cannot afford. They cannot make the purchase easily; they would have to work and save for a long time. Or, making the purchase would hurt and likely represent a significant loss of that person's disposable income. Even top earners in the American university educated professionals do not have 5k to toss around after all other expenses (student loan debt, rent or mortgage, utilities, healthcare costs, food and supplies, other expenses such as insurance costs and discretionary spending). Seagull ST19 movement is very affordable and column-wheel, companies like poljot as well as some chinese brands take advantage of this to deliver pretty good chronos at the ~4-500 range. Only downside is they're manual wind. Poljot Strela is a pretty amazing looking watch, Seagull 1963 ain't a slouch either. If you're looking for truly inexpensive mechanical chronos (200-400) with a storied history those two might be your best bet. Maybe people aren't such a big fan of eastern manufacturing (for some reason), but the Seagull 19 movement is a true successor to a swiss movement, and a feat of engineering in its own right.

After playing with many cost effective watches, I only have two favourites now. A Tissot T-Touch with a black face in stainless and a Seiko Premier with a white face and gold hands. These two are my daily wearables for work and in the shop. The Tissot can even tell you when you are completely walking the wrong way in Paris.

Or you could buy a Seiko 6139 and get a column wheel automatic chronograph with more historical significance than any modern Longines for around $300-$500.

Very good alternatives; If you want a watch that looks like the most iconic and expensive watches - and is not a fake. Or a homage. A useful guide. Thanks.

With watches I’d strongly suggest saving up for years to buy your heart’s desire rather than purchasing watches that cost a quarter of the purchase price as they will never satisfy in the long run and you’ll just build up a collection of lesser priced watches that could add up to the big purchase anyway in terms of servicing, straps and repair. Try to offload these cheaper watches and you’ll take a haircut. If you want a decent beater watch go quartz and stick with Tissot and their market segment. If you bought the Rolex Sub you’d be able to sell it at 90% plus for example. Mid range watches are a false economy in my view but just my 2c.
@eyeheartsushi22126 жыл бұрын
the Epster You make a valid point, but if a person's "heart's desire" is a popular Rolex model, then that changes everything. It'd be nice if anyone that saved money for a Rolex Sub could buy one at retail price. Sadly, that is not the case these days.

True only to a certain extent. I've never been truly impressed with a watch as I have just now seeing that patek philippe. Does that mean I'll stick with a Casio until I'm 70 years old to blow a chunk of my savings on a watch at that age?

I saved up for a while to purchase a Submariner or a Sea Dweller outright. I was disappointed with the F&F of a 8-11 thousand dollar watch. I ended up buying a Steinhart and I'm very pleased with it...though I still have that money set aside should I ever change my mind. I do agree, save up to buy the watch you want then decide if you want it.

Regardless of money, I found all three of the less expensive watches to be more attractive. Certainly as everyday wears, cost aside. I’m not much for dive watches- that Oris is an exception along with a compressor here and there. Great watch, far more engaging than the Rolex. As for the second set, I have a soft spot for fleigers. That IWC is certainly on my list, but that MB was a beauty. The last thing I need is another Fleiger.... I’ll be reading up on that shortly. The last pair, neither fit my style. Longines presents such an obvious value, SWATCH Group watches are a no brainer. The watch in this video has me interested in checking out their current offerings. Well done video, reasonable comparisons.

The watch I own that might fit in this category is the Oris big crown pro pilot. In my opinion the watch is pure quality for an incredible price. The grey sunburst dial looks great, a high quality fabric strap, and an in house manual wind movement with a ten day power reserve. I owned an Omega dark side for about the same amount of time as this Oris and the fabric strap of the Omega deteriorated at a much faster rate and the replacement for the Omega strap is like $500. I don't know what strap replacement cost for the Oris is but I don't need to know because it still looks brand new after 4 years. The clasp on the pro pilot is also very original and cool looking with great function, just overall great watch. I know an in house movement is not the end all be all but the less expensive watches you show on this video are using stock third party movements except for maybe the Oris diver. I honestly don't know if the movement in this watch is in house or not. But why not get a manufacture movement for a pretty low price. Love your videos.

I bought an Oris Aquis Staghorn limited edition and it came on the Oris bracelet. Very nice but I wanted to try their rubber strap and I believe it was $265 USD. That rubber strap is without a doubt one of the best ever, the clasp has micro adjust that one can adjust without taking the watch off the wrist. I have no idea about the leather strap pricing though.

STEINHART will be good enough of a diver for me, for a third of the price of an Oris
@SG-wj2qj6 жыл бұрын
Most of steinhart watches are just strait up rip offs. The ocean 1 and the 39 and 44 replicate a Rolex so much it's actually distasteful. As with their Nav-B replicating a Big pilot. If anything I'd say the titanium model or the Ocean 2 are decent buys.
@SG-wj2qj6 жыл бұрын
@@vangledosh yeah I know the difference. A steinhart onean 1 has the same hands, same crown, same bezel, same font, same case design almost everything is designed to be the same. Thats not a hommage. That's a rip off. The Oris is a hommage.

I never quite understood the "greatness" of IWC...I never thought of IWC as being up there with Rolex and definitely not anywhere near Patek. To me they are something that is a bit hyped and around the level of Omega for prestige.

Look son, going to explain it again since your little mind is not develop yet. You see son, there are types of rolex owners out there who buy it just cause it's expensive or just want to be "in" like a poser of being rich. Ask them about basic info about the rolex brand, history, or even what type of movement it has, cue grasshopper. Son, don't be a poser for a rolex.

Derick Rubio that can be said for any luxury goods. You have the hardcore followers and those just buying the most recognized name bc it’s nice and expensive. But the fact Rolex has a super high demand and is almost unanimously regarded as the best all around midrange brand for tons of reasons. Just because you aren’t a WIS doesn’t mean that person doesn’t respect the watch. My mother has 4 Rolexes. Ah can’t tell you the size, movement, or name in most of them but she knows they are nice watches at a fairly reasonable price for what you get. Just because you aren’t an expert doesn’t mean your just a poser.
