I'll never understand why cops go on these high speed chases. They often end just like this. Many years ago in the city I lived in, back when you could often pump your gas before paying, a person did a "pump and run". Cops chased them, it ended up in a horrible wreck killing several people. A teenager with no record was chased over $20 worth of gas. At some point common sense has to come into play.

SMH. My car has a keyfob which will detect if the fob gets too far from the vehicle when the ignition is on and/or when the engine is running. So, it would only be a minor software change to shut the car off if the keyfob is too far away AND the vehicle is moving or if the keyfob is too far away and the vehicle is put into gear. As a software engineer, I can't imagine this being more than a minor software change. For older cars that require the key to be inserted, a similar device could be retrofitted to allow for the officer to have a remote kill switch. I can think of a half dozen use cases off the top of my head to cover many of the possible use cases (i.e., what if the officer is down? What if the officer is X?) I've thought about doing this for my own vehicle in the case of carjacking. I can be the only one who's ever thought about it, and I would be willing to bet there are already devices on the market. A quick 2 min googling shows existing products as well as info on laws for LE to remotely kill new cars (and all the political wranging) beginning in 2026.

These police vehicles have twenty/thirty THOUSAND dollars in suspension upgrades and add-ons that don't come with the standard model like this: adding the security you mention would be easy/peasy and nothing in cost.
@cmmc34009 ай бұрын
Kill switches have their own issues. Car computers could be shut down, the products are out there, hell, Elon Musk probably has this one figured out using satellites! But, the trouble is, when the car dies, the brakes and steering does too. Whoever the driver runs into or whoever runs into the back of the car can sue. Always an issue in a litigious society. No matter what, someone could get hurt. However, they have a new thing and it is fun to watch because it reminds me of cartoon villains being captured. This grappling hook catches the tire and the cable, attached to the frame of a cop car, snaps taught and stops the car.....in a perfect world. The vehicle being caught would have to be grabbed before a certain speed. Also, the horsepower of the car would be an issue The sad fact is, around America police departments are suffering low application and hiring as well as large numbers of retirements and quitting the force due to the political/social/medical upheaval since 2020. They are having a hard time financially due to heavy use of overtime and now the extra work that is needed per arrest. I feel bad for law enforcement. They are so many things to so many people. From savior to antichrist, anything they do is scrutinized to such a high level that they are actually having PTSD from it as well.

And what if such a kill feature gets hacked, such that a third party bad actor can stop the police car at will? There are already remote devices that exploit the sophisticated keyfobs of newer cars, which allow car thieves to use a relay attack to gain the information needed to start your car without physical access to the keyfob.
