I stopped using all sweeteners 5 weeks ago. I don't know how my insulin is but my blood sugar has dropped to the 85-95 range from 110-120 range. I also stopped drinking anything but water. no coffee, no tea, no vinegar water and of course no sodas of any kind. In the last six days (May 1 to May 6) I have lost 7.9 lbs. Water helps me through fasting. I started keto 14 months ago. I was 71 years old and I will soon be 73. I started out at 384 lbs and as of the is morning I weighed 270.6 lbs. That's a loss of 113.4 lbs. I was in stage 3B kidney failure and in January of this year I was 1 point away from being back in stage one. My triglycerides dropped 69 points. My A1C was at 7.9 and is now at 5.7 ( I get that checked again in July) The only issue I am having is the loose skin. Keto and intermittent fasting has done more for me than every other weight plan I have ever use and honestly it has been quite easy for me to follow. Not being hungry all the time helps to control bad eating habits.

I also started to ask myself why I would NEED the taste of something sweet, regardless of what it was doing to my weight. I despise the idea of being hooked on anything, especially something artificial and something we really don't know enough about. Even if they were found to be perfectly safe in small doses like a coffee or soft drink, I'll still ask myself WHY I need that sweet taste. It's a slippery slope, no matter how we try to spin it.
@humanperson14984 жыл бұрын
John Taylor The study I read, the 2nd one, says: A significant increase of plasma insulin concentration was apparent after stimulation with sucrose and saccharin. In conclusion, the current data suggest that the sweeteners sucrose and saccharin activate a CPIR even when applied to the oral cavity only. So it’s the sweet taste that triggers a significant increase of insulin, whether that be from sugar OR saccharine etc.

It probably is helpful for some, those people who would go back to carbs without the substitutes. It's not easy, for sure, but if you can avoid them do or at least maybe try gradually reducing them. I have also heard of those who cut them out completely so that one loses the cravings and even loses the taste for sweets
@MelissaThompson4324 жыл бұрын
@@nightlady2001 this is how it works for me: If I'm "not allowed" to eat something, I start to resent the restriction, and that makes me more likely to break my willpower. I quit cigarettes by buying an "ecigarette", because I dislike vaping, but it delivers nicotine. What actually happened was that when a craving hit, I would look at the vape, decide it wasn't that bad a craving, and put it away. That's what artificial sweeteners are for me; I can't have sugar because it will make me physically ill, immediately, due to GI issues. But with {erythritol, mostly} I'm "allowed" to have something sweet. I don't, usually, because it doesn't taste like sugar, but if I do, it won't do all the bad things sugar does. And I'm not telling myself "you have to quit this eventually, too," because if I catch a mood, I'm going to "rebel," and probably eat a pound of chocolate sweetened with sugar, because "everybody hates me and why not." And then when I'm sober again, I'll hate MYSELF for a minute.

Dear Dr Berry, Would you consider filming everything you consume for a week and putting it on a video? I would really like to see what you eat and when you eat it. I first started low carb (SANE) about a year ago. Then I reduced the carbs further and increased the fats and protein. It's had wonderful effects. My aching joints are gone, and I've lost about 25lbs (mostly belly fat!) and my doctor stopped threatening me with medication for Type II diabetes. However I still have more than 200lbs to lose, and I have stalled. Hearing that I am not allowed sweeteners (and in other of your videos that I have to limit or even cut out nuts) makes me kinda sad. So, rather than focusing on the negative and what I can't have, I would like to focus on what I CAN have. I am hoping that by seeing what you eat, it would help me feel more positive and get some good ideas.

I'll update this post as I go to hopefully motivate people. Current situation: 185lbs, male, 38yo. I used to weigh 168 and was an avid runner only 3 years ago. I no longer run. I feel terrible. 3 years ago I went from an all water diet (I don't drink alcohol or caffeine) started drinking diet soda (caffeine free). Within a year, it became 100% of my liquid consumption. Seriously, for the last 2 years have barely had straight water. I drink at least a 2L of Diet Squirt every day, sometimes more. I've tried carnivore several times and lose about 5lbs upfront but I stall and then go back to sweets. I'm sure the Diet Squirt is the reason. I've been getting headaches regularly and I have never suffered from headaches in my life. I've developed tinnitus in the last couple years and it's become unbearable. Last night I could barely sleep and had to play a podcast really loud in order to drown out the ringing. I'm also getting nerve pain in my hand out of nowhere. Today is day 1 of giving up artificial sweeteners and my beloved diet Squirt. I'll be doing straight water, and keto. For the next month and seeing what changes. I am a disabled army vet with an initial blood sugar of 648 and A1C = 15.3 Dr. Berry has helped me baffle my Dr.'s, in less than six months. Following Dr. Berry's meal suggestions (grasss fed beef, bacon, low to no artificial sweetners) I lost 53 lbs in 6 months and I was able to get off of insulin shots and two metformin a day. My Dr and her nurse are still stunned at how quickly my numbers returned to normal. I added exercise and strength building workouts but stalled around the13 month mark. I began to crave keto snacks and the swelling in my ankles returned. I learned soy, maltodextrin, palm oil, sunflower oil and safflower oils were not good for me, they increased inflamation in my body. I stopped buying products containing the inflammatory oils and artificial sweetners and I am back on track. I spoke with my V.A. nurse today and she commended me on (lab/blood sugar tests) numbers that are out of the prediabetic and diabetic range! :) A1c = 4.6 and blood sugar is between 98 and 128 with spikes up to 144 after an occasional "cheat meal." Listen to Dr. Berry and make sure you take your Vitamin D and B12 (watch his video for the B12 he recommends from Amazon.) I bought the B12 and my energy level increased and returned to normal. My Dr. told me my levels were so good that I could stop taking the vitamin D and B12 for a while. One question Dr. Berry- I saw a video saying diabetics should take benfotiamine... do you recommend it? Thanks!

I needed this so much. I had my menstrual cycle and was experiencing pretty significant cravings. None of my cheats were working. I usually try crushing some glutamine, 5-HTP, and B vitamins but nothing was working. I have regular ice cream in the house and I usually just take a couple of spoonfuls and that will satisfy my craving. I bio hack with A continuous glucose monitor to ensure that my blood sugar stays under 100 for the entire day. If I see a spike, I row for 10 minutes and can knock the blood sugar back down pretty easily. Unfortunately, I noticed that even small amounts of the regular ice cream really Spike my blood sugar it hit 125. I switched to keto ice cream with sugar alcohols and I noticed that I didn't see a blood sugar spike. My blood sugar was raised to about 110 over a slow period. I would try to row and knock it down but it didn't really move. My blood sugar doesn't go down and drop back into the 80s, where it normally resides. When I did the real sugar, it would spike and then go back down. With the fake sugar, it doesn't rise quickly but it just stays persistently high all the time. Now of course, when I say high, I mean above 100 but under 120. When I'm on Keto, my post-meal blood glucose levels don't ever rise above 100. I fasted for 21 hours between my meals and my blood sugar didn't go down at all. They only thing different is the sugar alcohols. I tossed the ice cream (still 80% full). I got my insulin levels tested to see if I had a rise. 2 weeks ago they were at a 7. Very eager to see what the results are.

Within 24 hours of stopping the xylitol mint, blood glucose dropped from 110 to 82 and ketones rose and I was back into a ketogenic state. What a relief. I checked the studies, even searched specifically for Stevia + cephalic insulin and no one has bothered to test it since it can't so easily be MONOPOLIZED! But it seems a fairly simple test. A comparison is needed between sucrose, glucose & both more natural sweeteners & more lab-produced sweeteners with their caloric/non-caloric & glycemic/non-glycemic levels included at equal sweetness levels. It seems like an obvious connection, but science must have evidence before broad claims can be asserted as scientific. Personally, with Stevia, I can no longer tolerate sugar which tastes insanely over-sweet & is noticeable in everything, now. I have to wonder if their both being sweet is enough to guarantee the same biochemical insulin response. And some Stevia users who have trained their tastes to not perceive bitterness should be compared to those who still perceive bitterness might be an important internal comparison, also.

Hi Doctor Berry. I find that just a few flakes of sea salt helps cut bitterness in coffee, in much the same way as keto-friendly sweetener. I still add about a half-teaspoon of heavy cream, but have found I can do without the sweetener if I add the salt. It's not better, just different.

Your mouth will start to water without even putting that lemon in your mouth.... Your mind and thoughts can have a powerful effect on your body's reactions. Thanks for much, Dr. Berry. I kept searching for research that showed consensus on AS, but found that the scale was letting me know that the occasional diet soda was indeed stalling my weight loss for a few days, at least. I also don't like the idea of keeping that taste for sweets alive. (I'm going to throw away all my toothpaste with sweeteners in them, too, as I find it frankly insane that our culture puts sugar/sweeteners in it.) I don't think many people do. I learned it from a customer at a restaurant where I once worked. His son was diabetic, and they had a "treat day" once a month when he was allowed a diet soft drink, but he could only have one a month because they had to treat it like sugar and monitor his blood sugar/insulin balance for the rest of the evening. I took care of my mother (who was a type II) and I gave her Splenda and she was fine with it, so this shocked me.

I know Dr. Berry tells us that artificial sweeteners were not good and for some people could stall weight loss but I didn't think I was using enough to stall me for as long as it had been. I finally decided that I would go back to tracking my food to find out if I was missing something. I don't know why but I decided to scan the Splenda bag even though I "knew" it didn't have carbs. I was wrong!!!!! Splenda, AKA Sucralose has 1 carbohydrate gram for each teaspoon. As a matter of fact even Erithrytol has 0.5 grams of carbohydrates per teaspon.
