I've been keto for three years. But I was abusing stevia. I was taking huge amounts of the white powdered extract in my coffee and smoothies which I drank multiple mugs every day. After a year of keto, I began to experience peripheral neuropathy (toe tips and fingertips). It was progressively worsening, and I began to feel shooting pains from my toes up through my legs. My doctor was useless and after determining I did not have diabetes or any other condition, he wanted to prescribe some medication to relieve symptoms. I didn't want painkillers so I made systematic efforts to try and understand my condition. It took me quite a long time, using trial and error, to figure out what was going on. By process of elimination, I determined it was the stevia causing the problem. After completely eliminating stevia from my diet, I noticed a lessening of pain within 2 or 3 days. So I decided to stay off it for a longer period. Within another week I was feeling significantly better. And after 2 months all my neuropathy symptoms completely resolved. It's now been 8 months and I am still symptom-free. Had I used recommended quantities, I'm sure stevia would not have bothered me. But I hope someone does some study about over-use and whether there is some caution to the peripheral nervous system. If so, the public should be more strongly warned.

Warned by what? Doctors diagnose a problem, not you. I can say pasta is causing my anxiety disorder, that however is not supported by anything. Stevia is very much safe. The only side effect is bloating or digestive issues if used in high quantities. Peripheral neuropathy is just out of the question. Stevia is just a plant and used by mankind for millennia before it became commercially viable. You should be careful to choose natural products as well. You must get checked by a doctor because I'm pretty sure it's not Stevia causing your issue. Stop calling all doctors useless. Most doctors know more than you do about everything. You should also take your doctor's advice regarding Keto. That diet is not for everyone and it can cause many damages, like it did in my case. Stop listening even to these youtube "doctors" who tell people really dangerous things, not supported by any peer-reviewed science.

@@abrielrobertsson4160 I think, that there is often no balanced, evidence based view on diets. Instead people often promote a specific eating idiology, which may have worked very good for them, and sometimes they tend to cherrypick the studys which are presented and tend to discard informations which don't fit well in that viewpoint. Would you like to share your experiance with keto diet?
@abrielrobertsson41603 жыл бұрын
@@rabenklang7 Sure. My weight dropped immensely from Keto. I had a very normal weight, but I lost 6 kg in two weeks and that made me underweight. Keep in mind that I went with a Keto diet to help me gain weight, ironically enough. I looked like crap and had no strength whatsoever. For overweight people, I guess that's a good thing, but I do not advise it for anyone else. My ketones in urine were raised to the roof. I guess that means you're in a state of ketosis, but my doctors were really concerned when they saw how high they were. My amylase in blood and urine was high as well. It took me more than a year to get back to being healthy again. I still use sweeteners though and limit my added sugar intake to no more than 30 g per day (the recommended dose is no more than 36 g per day for males), but that's because I have a candida overgrowth problem, not because of diet. I've also completely cut processed foods and I still do a 16/8 intermittent fasting every day and a 24h one once a week, because I found out it helped with my GERD. Other than that I do eat everything, including complex carbs which are forbidden in Keto, but personally I think they are really important for our body. My issue is that these "doctors" advise it for everyone and it is clearly not for everyone. Underweight people should not even think about starting a Keto diet for e.g but as you said everyone's experience is different.

My first time using allulose I had a very scary reaction in my brain/head. Very frightening. I put 2-3 tablespoons of organic allulose in a pan along with 3 tablespoons of grass fed butter. Heated it and mixed it into a caramel consistency. Separately I roasted some raw macadamia nuts. After they cooled I mixed them into the caramel. It was so good I ate all of it! But a little while later I developed the strangest sensation in my head/brain. It was like you would imagine a hangover to be only a THOUSAND times worse. I was incapacitated. All I could do was crawl into bed. The next morning I was still having the effect, but milder. I had to stay home from work that day. I don't know whether cooking it in the pan like that had something to do with it, or the amount I consumed was the issue. But the effect was so severe I generally avoid allulose even though I have a large bag of it. I have used it a few times in small amounts and had no similar effect. But generally I avoid it completely. The effect was very severe. The fact that I had such a severe reaction tells me it is probably not safe for long term use. I'm kind of glad that was my first experience instead of using it in small amounts over a long period of time. Considering the severe effect it had I can't imagine it's safe. Also, some people are experiencing elevated liver enzymes when using allulose. Be careful. It's too new to know all the effects.

One thing I wish you had addressed is maltodextrin. While not sold as a sweetener it is used as a bulking agent for many sweeteners. Especially the super sweet ones like stevia and monk fruit. The problem with it is that even though it is not a sugar (it is a partially digested starch) it can have twice the effect as table sugar on insulin response. This is of consequence to those of us that are diabetic. Here you are thinking you are making a better choice and the sweetener is stealth mode more damaging than sugar from a filler ingredient.

The best thing I ever did when starting my keto diet was take the time to remove as much sugar as possible out of my diet. No added sugar to anything, no products unless they have no added sugar and minimal naturally-occuring amounts . At the time, I disliked just about every sweetener substitute. In the end, no sweeteners at all for a long time. I finally found Allulose, which is a 'rare' sugar that does not impact blood glucose. However. While it occurs naturally in small quantities ("rare"), it is manufactured from fructose. I can use it in a very limited amount, but I've found that retaining my no-sweetener dietary policy is the best for my health. It's my sweetener of choice, because I could use it if necessary, for instance in baked goods, but I find I don't really desire sweet foods at all anymore. But I did go through a period of using the Allulose and my "sweet tooth" started coming back. I'll take my good health over unnecessarily sweet foods any day.

You're right. If you can avoid any sugar or artificial ones for 21days, your body will understand the change and you won't need to use sugar anymore. Use the keto sugar just for small desserts once or twice a month, that's what I do and helps me to stay healthy and in ketosis.

I am confused, I have lost 80lbs, but have plateaued and was looking to kick start my fat burning again. Last week I did two 36hr water fasts. But instead of water I boiled 62 ounces of water, then as the water stared to cool I added 8 bag of green tea and let them defuse for a good 30 minutes. Then I poured the tea into a 64 ounce glass milk jug and added Great Value Lemonade (sugar free). I drank this on food days and on fasting days. The idea was to get the green tea to help release the fat from my fat cells. I was pleasantly surprised when I tested my pee on the 1st fast day and found I was in Ketosis. Usually it take me about 3 days to achieve ketosis. My protocol was to eat KETO on Mon Wed Fri Sat, FAST on Tue Thu then intentionally break KETO on Sun. This worked great I was in ketosis Tue thru Sat. The next week I repeated the protocol but I didn’t use the Great Value Lemonade, but replaced it with real 100% lemon juice and Stevia to sweeten it. The reason I did this was because I notice the Great Value Lemonade contained MALTODEXTRIN. All the info on the internet says while MALTODEXTRIN is technically a carbohydrate, it breaks down into a glucose and is worse than eating pure glucose. Shouldn’t this have knocked me out of Ketosis or not even allowed me to enter ketosis? I thought using real lemon juice instead would work better, but instead it took me 3 days to reach ketosis. I am confused and wondering maybe my body does not turn MALTODEXTRIN into glucose. I need to do this experiment wearing a CGM, which I don’t have yet.

This video is 3 years old and something has changed since. Dear Dr. Ekberg, you couldn't know the following at the time this video was produced and for that, please, don't understand it as an objection. Generally I think the leading idea or thought: Sweeteners are sweeteners and no medicine; don't try to treat any health problems by them - is right. The idea to use sweeteners that are no artificial molecules but existing in nature is also right for principle. But, as so often, things are not as simple as they seemed at first. At first: Thank you for the excellent presentation of the sugar alcohols and their metabolism. For me as an IBS patient they never were to be considered, but they are natural (for example sorbitol in pears) and many persons, specially with diabetes, had no problem with them. Since a few weeks we know that just erythritol you considered to be the (relatively) best of the sugar alcoholes, but also sorbitol and xylitol are changing the platelets and increase the risk for heart attack and stroke. Stevia is mostly not used in its natural form as leaf but as steviol glycoside powder - and this means, in a highly processed form. Mostly mixed with erythritol or maltodextrine. Also the origine monk fruit is often highly processed to eliminate the bitterns. (I know that is differing: You can buy original stevia leafs to mix them into your tea herbs and I bought a monk fruit product only consisting in monk fruit juice concentrate and demineralized water (and Potassium Sorbate as preservative, okay, that's the only bullet I had to bite). But at least, monk fruit plays a part in Traditional Chinese Medicine and has some proven effects on certain health problems. But I don't forget your initial condition: we speak of a sweetener, not of a medicine. Monk fruit isn't on the western markets since a real long time, so we have to wait on studies to come concerning possible health disadvantages or negative effects. But to come back to Stevia: It is as well as the artificial Sucralose suspected to harm the microbiome. Meanwhile there is a tendency in the media to advise people to return to sugar - in small amounts, of course. And that leads me to my idea. We use the term "sugar" as a synonyme to "Sucrose" (For Germans: "Saccharose"). but there are some other sugars to be used instead of it without all the disadvantages of Sucrose. You mentioned yourself: - Allulose; unfortunately still not allowed in the EU , but to be ordered on American websites. The newest preparation: Allulose with monk fruit. I didn't yet open the sachet, I am really curious about it. - Further more: Tagatose, the best of sugars in my eyes: Low GI, not caries-producing, prebiotic, fat burning supporting, and only 240 calories on 100 g instead of 400 as sucrose - while having the same intensity of sweetening. - Galactose, natural metabolic product in human digestion: Low GI, not caries-producing, same sweetening intensitiy and calories like sucrose but increasing the performance of the brain cells with good effects for persons in danger of dementia. - Trehalose, also low GI and non caries-producing, less sweet than sugar (about 50 %), with high temperature stability and convenient for foods to be frozen. Energy: 362 kcal on 100 g) - Isomaltulose, also called Palatinose, low GI and nearly not caries producing, ideal before sports because of the slow and steady metabolism and blood sugar, and fatburning supporting. Sweetening intensity also about 50%; Calories 375 on 100 g. Allulose and Trehalose have an disadvantage They can increase the growth of two types of pathogenic bacteria: Allulose was named in the context of Klebsiellae and Trehalose in that of Clostridium difficile. So I am advising people to speak with their doctors first before using those types of sugar. And: All of these sugars are expensive, but the reflected use in small amounts will ease this aspect. But I think the fundamental reflexions you made, Dr. Ekberg, are right and helpful in choosing the individual matching sweetener. Thank you!

@@drekberg , I am disappointed that raw organic honey 🍯 is NOT on your list . Stevia leaf is oftentimes heavily processed and thus lost its "naturalness" unlike my raw organic honey which is rich in antioxidants and minerals and is pure. You need to make much needed amendment to this presentation. My first disappointing video with the exclusion of Raw Organic Honey. Otherwise a good video.

Thank you so much, Dr. Sten!! I started a low-carb diet 3 years ago. About two years ago, I started getting increasingly bad digestive issues. It finally came to diarrhea just about every day, and wearing Depends a couple days a week. I had been using Erythritol for baking and so many other things. I think my body developed an intolerance to it. From what you say, it probably ruined my gut bacteria. The G.I. doctor gave me some medicine to reset me. I haven’t touched dairy or Erythritol in several months. I’m not sure I want to try sugar substitute again. I feel a loss at not being able to have a sweet treat that I bake. The good sweeteners don’t have the bulk that I need for baking. But I’m seeing that I can substitute a piece of low-carb bread for the muffin I used to have in the morning. Thank you so much for all this great information. I’m not sure I really want these sweeteners anymore, and it’s helping me a lot. It’s probably better for me not to have them

Thank you so much. I’ve been learning the past couple years about health and nutrition for myself. I’ve been so confused and trying to figure this out. My body seems to be really sensitive to sugar and there are so many alternatives that it was hard to try to discern what the pros and cons of each were. I really appreciate this video!

It’s erythritol and monk fruit. More erythritol than monk fruit. You can buy pure monk fruit powder or liquid online. It’s pricey, but you use a tiny amount.

Thank you for making this information really easy to understand. I recently noticed that a lot of powder stevia products have erythritol in them as well. You have to read the label and make sure its 100% stevia if that is what you want. I'm going to try a liquid form of stevia.

I will tell you this and with the doctor is not good in coffee. And I don't like anything exceptionally sweet I just like a hint of sweetness to my coffee. And stevia takes very little to give it that hint but it destroys my wonderful cup of coffee. And that is an extracted form. It also gives a slate strange taste to my whipped cream so I'm going to try some of the other sources from the video suggested for good coffee. I have tried the coconut cream and that is sweet enough, and quite pleasing to my palate.

The part on the alcohols was extremely helpful! I haven't found a detailed analysis of the sugar alcohols anywhere else! Thank you! (I have been looking into sugar alternatives for Christmas baking and I need some kind of sugar for that - stevia in large amounts is ghastly)

@@drekberg are sugar alcohols all like erythritol all natural? I’m reading conflicting things online.
@kathyjames92502 жыл бұрын
@@susanneschauf7417 I find the Stevia in glycerine (glycerinated? I think it is called) tastes better in baking and can be purchased with different flavours, so far I have tried the plain and the vanilla, which I also like in coffee, but decided to quit since it seems to cause insulin surges like any sweet flavour and still affects fat storage! But now and then, if baking for others the tiny amounts needed seem less h❤armful than cups of sugar.

Xylitol although toxic to dogs is very beneficial for your teeth. I found a mouthwash at the dollar store using xylitol and baking soda which I believe is much healthier for the mouth than other artificially produced chemicals. Xylitol gum is becoming more popular too because the act of chewing something has shown benefits to the body and xylitol is one of the best substances for the teeth while also being sweet.

I can vouch for this as well. I use about 4-5 drops of liquid stevia and a pinch of salt and it's perfection. No bitterness or weird aftertaste. But you have to be very careful with your amounts. Too much of either will ruin it.

Whew I was kinda worried for a bit there. I just cut back sugar greatly from my diet and have cut back a lot of processed foods too. I'd been using maple syrup in my coffee to sweeten it after cutting down from regular table sugar, but wanted an even better alternative so I've been relying on Stevia. Thankfully what I thought was a huge propaganda stick for health nuts is actually natural! Thank you so much for covering this, I feel a lot better about my choice and yes I have noticed the benefits of doing so. I don't have bloating like I did and I'm starting to lose weight and have even more energy to exercise and strength train. I even sleep better, it's amazing what a few changes and some knowledge can do for you, thank you so much for being so honest about our health and explaining how things work in harmony or disharmony with us.

All the Stevia (and monk fruit) on the market has more erythritol than Stevia. They only show it in very small print. Actually, pure Stevia withouth the added Erithritol cost a fortune and it is very hard to find.
