On my 300 TDI Vacuum pump I did replaced the rivets on the end cap with small bolts and nylon nuts a few years ago. Still holding up, no leaks. I recommend doing one at a time because of the spring.

My vacuum pump is already leaking. The OEM is very expensive here in Brazil, so I was told to replace the rivets by screws, this would be better than replacing by an aftermakert one (and cheaper). Still haven't done so. Curiously, I just replaced the lift pump last month, same problem, but that was cheap (and replaced by OEM). Nice tip about the 2 gaskets. Cheers

Actually I have had a lot of success with after market pumps and 2 gaskets You can re seal the cover and use nuts and bolts - you have nothing to lose! Mike

Great test for leaks. Can you comment further on using two vacuum pump gaskets and how they save the end cap?

The end cap is held on with cheap rivets The stroke of the piston is just enough to slightly hit the end cap, and stretch the rivets causing oil leaks By putting a second gasket the stroke is shorter, thus not hitting the cap, but with negligible result for vacuum Mike

Hi Mike, still haven't fixed the leak on the vacuum pump. I have just replaced the servo which was cracked, now I believe the pump is being "forced" more, since there are no leaks on the servo, and there's a lot more oil leaking from behind the pump. I'm curious on how do you put the 2 gaskets, do you grease them together, or bone dry? Could you please make a video one day, when you have the chance? I just saw the pump now, there are nuts and bolts there already, so someone tried to fix it already...Cheers

Hi Mike, here in England, love your channel! I've just made my own smoke machine and am trying to find leak on my 300tdi. What do I need to block off please? Do I need to drop the downpipe. Many thanks... James(Kent)

I drop the down pipe and made a 10mm plate with rubber gasket using the gasket as a template - you need to block the intake manifold and the breather on the rocker box - if you have the radiator attached you will be ok but if a bare engine then I blank off the oil cooler pipes too You will find out leaks when you charge with smoke - not too much pressure though!

@@BritannicaRestorations that's really helpful thanks, I weld and such like so no problem. I'm really hoping the smoke machine I've made will help me to stop chasing my tail on these oil leaks. Did you ever look into making a smoke machine yourself? James 👍😁👍
