Man I could listen to you all day giving these tech tips on how to wiggle the most power out of these engines. Thanks for answering my question on the 2nd ring delete and whether boost would be good to run or not without it. That motor is responsive for sure. I can't believe that anyone would question your knowledge on this stuff as long as you been racing and how dominant you are in this sport. I was going to ask you a question and forgot what it was 😂😅

Ben I’ve learned a lot over the decades but now your videos are showing me just how much I haven’t learned. Even with procedures that we both do the same, you usually have a tip that makes it easier or a little bit better. That’s why you’re the teacher and I’m sitting in the front row taking it all in 😉 The opening segment with the Ford and Chevy paired up and staged, after your brief description of the two engines I correctly picked the winner. Most folks would pick the Chevy running alcohol and injected despite having less displacement. The Fords larger displacement is a slight advantage but the BT canted valve heads topped with a dual quad induction system is always a safe bet If I was your next door neighbor, I would be the pest always hanging around. That Windsor sound is like hearing the dinner bell ringing. I would come running 😂🏁

Appreciate your kind words and a humbling experience to be thought of as making a difference, with many people who love to tinker with engines. I feel many like how I bounce from street hi-tech to all out racing insights and perhaps it really opens up a better understanding for all of us gearheads! Thanks Daniel and take care.

I like reading your comments from mostly younger guys that clearly have a sincere desire to learn because they look at you like their mentor. That’s a good reason to feel proud and humble as well. Your method of presenting the more common procedures along with the highly complex hardcore components and methods works very good for me and most certainly others as well. For the novice gear heads I think your mellow demeanor puts them at ease and your methodical approach to explaining things doesn’t over simplify or get overly complicated either. The best way to describe it is the “BEN” method 👍🏁

I need to have Ben build me a hot little 289 for my 65 mustang.
@danielwilson6665
@danielwilson6665 Ай бұрын
I think you do too. But hot is an expensive choice nowadays. With so many aftermarket large displacement small block Ford options available, I can’t remember the last time I saw a 289 build. But don’t be discouraged if an original 289 is all you have to start with. The same methods used to build 289 screamers back in the day still apply today. Bolt on components like a Holley carb, aluminum intake, a complete MSD ignition system, tubular headers with dual exhaust, aluminum accessory drive pulleys using serpentine belts and a low restriction air filter replacement or complete K&N Filter assembly are all bolt on upgrades that don’t require taking the engine apart. The bolt on parts increase power by greatly improving volumetric efficiency or reducing drag and parasitic power loss. But putting them on a worn out engine is not recommended If you need the whole engine rebuilt which it probably needs anyway, that’s the best way to build power with a well matched combination of parts. All internal engine components get replaced with aftermarket performance parts except the crankshaft if it’s still reusable. The heads get completely rebuilt and the block, heads and more have to go to the machine shop to perfect the dimensions and friction surfaces for precision clearances and fit . If all goes well you will have a good street engine with about 300 horsepower more or less depending upon the compression and cam used. That’s all subject to change considerably if a 347” stroker kit assembly will work with the 289 block. Actually I don’t remember because I’ve been focused on 351 Cleveland based engines for 42 years. That would be the ultimate small block Ford pushrod type engine that will still fit between the shock towers of your ‘65 Mustang without major surgery. But I’m not a professional and I don’t know if Ben is still building customers engines. If you’re serious, just ask Ben and find out. If you were just daydreaming and your comment was a “WOW JUST IMAGINE IF “ passing thought, then my reply is a waste of time. No big deal. Dream on because they can become reality with enough motivation. 🤷‍♂️✌🏻

@danielwilson6665 I don't want some high horsepower build. I'd be very happy with a streetable, high revving, 400hp 289ci which is easy with those motors. Something fun on the street that revs quick and chops at the stoplight.
@danielwilson6665
@danielwilson6665 Ай бұрын
@@royenri01 I hear you loud and clear my friend. The 400 horsepower goal in a streetable package can be done. Depending upon your experience and skill, you could build your engine and reduce the overall cost. If Ben isn’t still building engines for new customers , you can still contact him for his expert advice and recommendations. His consulting fees are very reasonable considering his extensive experience with engines just like yours and I’m pretty sure he would tell you the importance of having a plan first. Including a combination of compatible parts for the power goal that is also budget friendly. Building is where the fun begins. Enjoy 🏁

@benalamedaracing2765 Ай бұрын
400hp with a 289 is reachable and Daniel is correct in planning your parts lists and combination early on before you dive head first! 289 cranks is not rare and if you find one stock after all these years have it checked for cracks just to make sure because they are also very strong because they are nodular iron plenty strong within reasonable expectations.

@JG-kv4oi
@JG-kv4oi Ай бұрын
Thats very responsive. Sounds great! I was always of the belief on my old V8s to run as much advance as possible, ie advance initial timing until it wanted to kick back on starting, retard a degree or so and limit the timing to just below detonation on the final timing. Which meant I adjusted my timing several times on a trip from home at 3600 elevation on my way down to sea level. Never used a timing light, am I missing something in the equation?
@benalamedaracing2765
@benalamedaracing2765 Ай бұрын
I had a timing adjuster on my dash with a dial showing "0" adv. at sea level. Then as I go up I turn it slowly and @ 2500 static level I usually at about 3-4 degrees advance. Sometimes specially on summer months 2500ft altitude actually shows higher because hot air is thinner and makes the engine think it is at a higher elevation compared to winter at the same location.

Ben I just saw your video. I have a question about your compression ring, Have you experimented with Step gap ring and top bevel on it's i.d. portion? I'm curious to know your thoughts on that because I'm not sure if it would Be counter productive for your vacuum pump. Sir, I love your video. Looking forward to more content And possibly seeing one of your personal cars. Thanks for clearing up my question about CCP. Up to 25psi difference, that's substantial amount from altitude change. Good to know.
@benalamedaracing2765
@benalamedaracing2765 Ай бұрын
Good question. All effort must be done to keep blowby past the top rings and if you prefer two piece zero gap that would be good. Gas ports vertical or horizontal also comes into play and it all depends on what works for you! I will not dictate what you or other do and will always give the good and bad with all these set ups. I already have an idea on a video highlighting the difference and it should be very informative! Obtw, on the cranking pressure difference, every engine reacts differently specially how the early or late intake valve closing changes the numbers. The higher the altitude the thinner the air and the bigger the drop in cranking pressures.

Thank you for your comment and now I would run these observations to you. This engine runs a steel flexplate (SFI) that is kind of heavy compared to the stockers. Owner will switch to an aluminum reactor flexplate and uses an 8 inch 4400 stall converter with about 2.5 quarts of trans fluid in it. You think even without the aluminum flexplate and using what we have here with an additional weight of 2.5 quarts and an 8 inch converter it will slow down by a whole lot? Next time I will strap all of them with a heavy billet flywheel and I wonder what the comments from the likes of you will be? I like your name anyway so I kind of figure you are the rpm expert. Salute sir.
