The reason for the extra buttons on the controller itself IS that you don't have to travel to the keyboard anymore, even though it might be close, it's still better to not have to move to the keyboard at all. Also the larger one is more ergonomic due to the wristpad.
@UHStudio

yep, could replicate most of the functions from the keyboard to the 3d mouse

I just got a Spacemouse Compact. I understood how to use it within one hour of practice. Instant improvement, Autodesk Alias has the best improvement. With the two buttons I bound ctrl+shift so I don't have to go back to the keyboard for the marking menus. It's a game changer. It works great in Fusion 360 except when the perspective scale gets messed up, switching to ortho backing away from the model and switching back to perspective fixes it. They could improve it in Blender, if you sneeze and get out of bounds you can't return, you have to reset by picking an object in the lister and hit (numpad .) to "focus on selected". Also Blender uses "mouse focus" to determine the active viewport so you need to make sure your mouse pointer stays within the viewport for it to work. If your mouse pointer leaves the viewport for a menu it stops working.
@UHStudio

Yes, there could definitely be improvements in Blender. Although, the behaviour you describe, it works the same way in Rhino, so every once in a while, I need to run a zoom-to-selected command

I disagree about which is the most useful. The spacemouse pro is extremely useful if you set it up with the keys you want it to have. It has all of the primary keys anyone would need, and changing the other custom keys to things like, save, delete, copy, paste, undo, redo, enter etc make it even more useful. You also wouldn't have to move your hand from the spacemouse to the keyboard all the time if you used the buttons on the spacemouse instead of the keyboard keys. I suggest getting used to using them instead and stop moving to the keyboard as much. Also, the small mouse has the problem where if you lift up you just lift the mouse up off the desk, or it slides around. With the larger spacemouse pro your wrist holds the mouse down so it doesn't move forward, or up when moving around in your model. I also use each programs shortcut gestures, which gives me the same effect as hot keys. I do not use hot keys at all because of this. I also purchased a logitech G600 which I programmed so that the 12 side buttons is a number pad and the far right button is an enter key. This allows me to never have to use the keyboard unless I am typing letters, which isn't extremely common when designing (mostly just for naming things or doing drawings).

Definitely a valid point! But it gets tedious if you are using two home computers, a work computer, and 4 different software packages on each ;)

I disagree with this comment and 100% agree with the video narrator. I don’t want to spend the extra time setting up the keys for a whole new workflow . I don’t have the time even if I DID want to. I also agree with the video comment regarding bridging the gap between the different quirks amongst each different app. I use 3D in Revit, photoshop , and illustrator and the small space mouse really does a great job of unifying my hand and wrist movements in 3D space in all 3 programs

Finally, a video that is comparing them. Thank you so much. I'm torn between wireless & enterprise. I wish they made a wireless enterprise version. I like to lounge around wirelessly sometimes with my wacom intuos draw.
@UHStudio
@UHStudio 2 жыл бұрын
The enterprise has the screen, to it would need to be recharged quite often if it were wireless in any case. The enterprise is a great tool, but you have to be certain that you will first commit to program it for your intended pursposes and it takes time to get it right. And then commit to using it, which is adding a new kind of muscle memory. In the end, like any tool, you get the value's worth of the time you invest in learning how to use this new tool.

I use a wired space mouse. it has two programmable keys on either side. Often in CAD, you can program those keys to bring up a menu on the screen (that you have populated with common used commands) and this does a lot of the work that the normal mouse does. You can save these configs for different programs. This will make you faster.

With the enterprise, it is possible. With the pro, at least for me, I still need additional keys on the keyboard so still need to travel. I have had intense modelling sessions though, where I have used just the Enterprise and a mouse to do everything with the keyboard of the way. It worked well, but it was quite specific, so the buttons were enough.

I use spacepilot pro for 8 years in Rhino in that is the meaning why I am incredibly faster than others - in spite of lot of others which, didnt get it yet , and are still slower. But in blender- it is different case. Iam moving to blender for special kind of things where it is better. But in blender you have to use lot of shortcuts which make you realy faster at all. I didn´t use it yet. But I am very happy for someone like you show the possibilities. So thank you for that! I am also using mechanical numpad keypoard on the left for the numbers. Place for 3d mouse is still there :) You are not using shortcuts on the keyboard not at all? :) Great work! Awesome channel! (and you also move from rhino to blender does´nt you ?) :)

Thanks for sharing your experience and for your kind words! I still use both Rhino and Blender. As mentined in the video, I am actually using the smallest 3d mouse at the moment, so I don't have any hotkeys set up and rely on the keyboard for hotkeys. However, if I need to input some really serious 3d time, I would pop out the enterprise and set up the hotkeys specifically for the workflow that I need.

Let's be honest...I purchased a 3d connexion space mouse enterprise thinking it would have been useful for my AutoCAD 3D work. I was wrong. First of all all the little buttons on this device need to be pressed several times before implementing the command you want making the workflow very slow. Secondly the rotation of the model is smooth only when you are dealing with small model built around the origin otherwise it gets absolutely messy. Third and last point the AuroCAD workflow needs several command that a modest keyboard can implement better than this expensive device because otherwise you need to switch from the 3D connexion to the keyboard making everything more complicated. Even the mouse is not so great. You can easily press the lateral buttons by mistake and the overall size is not so comfortable and need wire. I wonder why I have purchased something so useless and expensive...maybe I wanted to try getting excited by the ads...so my suggestion is to think twice. Maybe Industrial designer could find a better use but I do not encourage such an expensive device for architect! :D

Thanks for sharing your experience. While I don't use autocad, it works smooth in Rhino and would have thought that it would work just as smooth in autocad. I do find that the occasional, zoom selected (or equivalent command) helps with the 3d mouse as much as it helps with helping reset the view with a 2d mouse.

Just what I was thinking. I'm contemplating buying one and thought having the mini space mouse only is such a waste to only be able to scroll. A large unit like the Enterprise can be customized so you never have to look down to reorient your fingers on a keyboard, plus reorienting again when you look up to your monitor. That takes up much time.

@@3LFL3DA are the keys on your Pro (or is it Enterprise?) easy to reach and click without looking down? My main reason to get one is my left fingers just keep missing when having to press Alt or ctrl keys along doing some stretching or acrobatic move to reach an alphabet key and keeps requiring me to look down to reorient. When I'm doing hundreds or thousands of clicks in a work session, it just doubles the time every moment I have to look away from my screen. I was considering a key pad like the Razer Tartarus V2 but am drawn to the scroll wheel on the 3dconnexion Enterprise. I'm just a little concerned about the keys on the enterprise as its not a normal keyboard layout. I dont want to spend so much buying it if it doesnt eliminate my need to stare away from screen to reorient.

Man, I really don't get videos like this. I've seen a number of them now saying that the Compact is the best model the Pro is a waste of money for what it provides, and the Enterprise is too expensive for anybody but the heaviest power users. While I agree with the last point I don't understand why you'd buy one of these things if you're NOT a power user. If you don't do stuff professionally where the Space Mouse isn't necessary, what's the point in the first place, and if you do, why not buy the Enterprise? The whole point of the hotkeys is so that you can use the keyboard as little as possible, take your hand off the mouse as little as possible to increase productivity, reduce time moving between devices. As for setting up hotkeys, it DOESN'T take a long time, but why is it a problem that it takes time at all? Setting up hotkeys for ANYTHING takes a little time and tweaking, but it's such a worthwhile investment. That's the whole point of this thing: up front investment for huge payoff down the road. And that brings me to back to my point about the smaller models being the actual waste of money. Why would you buy this other than to be more productive? If your goal is to be more productive, why would you not want as many tools within reach of your fingers as possible? If you want as many tools within reach of your fingers as possible, why would you bother considering the smaller models? I just don't get it.

Blender has funny support for setting up the hotkeys. You basically have to set them up within Blender as opposed to the 3dx connexion app. At least that's the way it works on windows. Not sure about on mac.

@UHStudio
@UHStudio 2 ай бұрын
It's not cheap, especially for emerging markets, indeed. Unfortunately these types of tech, well actually including laptops, phones, even cars, etc are more or less the same price points throughout the world, which makes them more accessible in higher-income economies compared to lower-income ones. Actually, even Photoshop and Autodesk licenses are similar, which is crazy. So, yes it's definitely much more expensive in India than it needs to be. These types of niche devices offer productivity performance, which at the end of the day is not that much, so it needs to be judged compared to what it offers. Yet, I once watched a very interesting video by Casey Neistat about his vido gear and the exponantially more expensive that prodcuts that offer a bit higher quality become. I think he callled it the law of deminishing returns. You can buy a standard mouse for $10, and better mouse for $35, or a higher end mouse for $100 and a space mouse. At the end of the day, it's a mouse, but it does offer benefits, which may seem that what they offer is less signficant for the higher price. Yet, if ergonomics are important (as they should be for everyone), you are working in 3d all day, and you work long hours, then a higher price can justify the comfort and also the price it would cost to look after a wrist injury.

Hey Dimas I’ve actually been going a lot into 3D design as of lately and I’m an apple user... I was searching for the best ergonomic mouse in the market to equip myself well to be limitless... Aside from the little wireless one that you recommend here, what other ergonomic mouse do you recommend I purchase to go with it? I’m left-handed ! Also, i know this may too much to ask but I want to purchase my first desktop computer and I found the Mac Pro very appealing although a bit too expensive.. Do you know any non-apple counterpart that is great for 3D design? I plan on making that my main career. Thank you Dima!!

I was kinda thinking the same - small one would be much closer to the keyboard...but, i have already got the mid-sized Spacemouse pro - hmm, should I spend out on another?? I do find though it's easy to assign shortcut keys to all the Spacemouse pro keys, so yes I do have doubles but all the important most used keyboard keys are also assigned right next to the Spacemouse control knob (it's actually quicker than spanning over the keyboard!)- It's like what you said about using different mouses - it helps to prevent RSI.

The Video is really nice and I wish I had watched before :) I want to give a feedback based on my personal experience as architect designer. I got tempted to buy the most expensive connexion device and honestly it is a waste of money. I could accept the idea to get used to a different workflow but it is totally unacceptable that the buttons on this device need to be pressed several times before they actually implement a command to AutoCAD.
