This is a great example of how tank shells work. I also wish we could print this ourselves.

You can, so long as you have a 3D printer, modeling knowledge, and the resolve to see it to the end.

this is a great example how tank ammuniton not works ;) it is a nice video, but whatever this is, modern kinetic tank ammunition are mostly long rod penetrators rounds like this are (somewhat) used in auto cannons nowadays, but they don't use a monolithic projectile anymore, they use frangible projectiles or timed fuzes with lots of subprojectiles

That apfsds looked like a apcrfsds, like a fin stabilized apcr round with how the steel rod behaved, very cool video
@potatogrease242010 ай бұрын
had to look up what an apcr is, turns out it’s usually called an HVAP in the states. learned something new today
@PandaMan-xy1he9 ай бұрын
@@potatogrease2420 HVAP is a type of APCR, but very different from German and Soviet APCRs. It used a much heavier, larger core, giving it much improved performance.

I've loved this project you've embarked on, it's certainly entertaining and I look forward to more testing of all sorts of projectiles you can come up with. I'd love to see an attempt at more fin stabilized darts. EDIT: I made my comment a second too soon LOL, I was at 2:00 when I paused. It's genuinely remarkable you managed to get it to function, and it's disturbingly accurate to simulations (I have to wonder if you also dabble in doing that as a form of research for your projectile iterations.) Even down to the darts sabot petals impacting on the target, something you often see in real-world testing.

This stuff is so cool. You're one of my favourite channels on KZbin right now.
@K25_the_first11 күн бұрын
i think what's stopping the penetration is the distance, the sabot doesn't have time to fully release the projectile before it hits but this is so damn cool

The idea of apfsds is to use a thin dart made of dense material to puncture armour. You just made a smaller projectile with same density ie it carries less momentum now (probably)
@CertifiedIndustryProfessional Жыл бұрын
Maybe try gradual rifling - going from a standstill straight to 1:10 is probably putting noticeable torque on your rifling which is what causes it come out of position. No need to abandon 1:10 but maybe ramp it up from 1:3?

i think the reason why the apds did the same as the AP is because of the loss in mass, and why the APFSDS did so well, it had much more mass than both AP and APDS

btw just so you know you cant just use the angle to get the comparative thickness for the plate you are penetrating as deflection causes the penetrating projectile to follow a exponential curve through the plate even on a penetrating shot. this is a common but very dangerous missconception in balistics

The thing with APDS OR APFSDS is there should be no spin, the may tumbling especially without the fine, though saying that I realize this applies to rod like projectiles and you are using more bullet shaped slugs, which is benefitted by spin, I think I'm gonna be quiet now

The problems you've had in this video are why Discarding Sabot AP rounds are fired from smoothbore guns, and not rifled guns. It was the same issue discovered by tank engineers in Warsaw Pact and NATO nations during the Cold War, as nations developed what was then the next generation of tanks like the Patton, Leopard and T-62.
