Nice tutorial, having the option to weld spline verts would be so nice in the vertex weld modifier.

a fine tutorial. As always from you. Alternatively to the two Slice modifiers you could use a Box as Cull Object inside the Array modifier

Your tutorial is, as always, very informative and so professional. Maybe a patreon for your students? There are those of us who would pay for such content and a comprehensive course of your Autodesk's Rig B rig.

hi, I saw some of your tutorials but they are very old, and I was wondering if it is possible to see the creation of various models, such as a tutorial of a bench, a chair, a well, a beautiful house, and many other things, but with the new 3ds max 2024.2

Paul, I will like that you make a video talking (deep talking) about AI in the 3D world programs. Because I think that "maybe" so many tools or the way we are working will be not useful anymore (something that is happen in programing) or maybe I am wrong. Many thanks

Interesting topic. At this point I see it mostly as a great reference and generator of ideas and nothing more. Scripting with it really doesn't work well at this stage of the game but it is fantastic for generating ideas. I'm not sure that I have much more to say about it at this time. It is here to stay and we will all just have to figure out how to use it as a new tool in our arsenal.

Hey Paul, how come you are using 3ds max to this day? Aren't other 3d software lightyears ahead both in ux/functionalaty and optimasition/performence? When I open maya and blender after using 3ds max for 5 years there are so many cool tools in them I wish I had in 3ds max from day one and I haven't mentioned the issues with performence demaning stuff yet. I get that in theory its more user friendly and linear then other 3d software with the modifier stack, but it seems more capital was invested in maya by autodesk and so many great design choices are just simply not in it.

No they are not. Performance wise none of them hold a candle to Max. Max pushes more polys faster than any of them. UI sure, but I don't like Maya's either. As for functionality, try and do this in Maya. Blender is slow, you can't push much at it. Great for people learning and small productions but it does not scale well. Max is used in more markets then all the others combined, there isn't just games and films to work in. I have also been servicing clients for 30 years in Max and it has not slowed down. Max gets more development now then Maya does. Yes there was a point in time when there were lots of politics that were getting in the way of Max development, that is long in the past. Just hold tight and wait for what is coming. Things are only getting better. Which cool tools are in the others that you wish were in Max?

@@paulneale Apologies for the delayed response; I had a first aid test and needed to devote time to prepare for it and I wanted to write an in depth response: Initially, I'd like to mention that I don't possess specific information about the software’s architecture, structural algorithms used, or its relation to different GPU and processor types. On this account, my capabilities are limited to two actions: 1) making assumptions based on insights shared by professionals regarding the software design/philosophy/architecture/history/background; and 2) leveraging my own experiences with 3ds Max and other software to outline my preferences concerning 3D software. In light of this, I wish to share some experiences relating to the points you raised. During my diploma work, I encountered challenges while handling a 3D model of 50,000 polygons in Max. It struggled to display the entire model as a single entity and apply/use modifiers on it. However, when I transitioned the same model to Maya, the software managed the model much more efficiently. This observation was somewhat explained in a CG Academy video by Chris Thomas. In the video, which predates the era when polygon modeling became standard (as Maya primarily started utilizing NURBS modeling), Chris mentioned that in the realm of architectural modeling, polygon modeling was not significantly essential. His argument implied that Max is typically used to render models created in professional CAD software like ArchiCAD. Furthermore, during rendering projects, I observed certain behavior in 3ds Max that aligns with Chris's explanation. For instance, in one project that required the use of particle systems and texture animations, I noticed a ten-fold increase in pre-render processing and overall estimated rendering time, despite having powerful Quadro GPUs. Even attempts to enhance processing power through virtual computers (virtual computers that had the world’s strongerst cpu’s in it virutally, 3 of them actually) did not improve CPU-bound functions such as modifiers, texture animations, model displaying and particle systems. This leads me to believe that 3ds Max was tailored to cater to architecture students seeking user-friendly software to render CAD models without delving into the intricacies of complex 3D design software. Over time, the procedural workflows offered by Maya and Houdini, developed with a more flexible architecture, seem to have bridged the performance and capability gaps that Max has in comparison, particularly in procedural functions. On the other hand Blender has some functions that seem ill adviced. The use of the Catmull algorithm for subdivision surfaces does underscore a limitation when compared to other 3D software. However, its open-source nature provides a silver lining as users can theoretically rectify any dissatisfaction, unlike in Max where workarounds are impossible without creating a function as a plugin from the ground up. I also encountered odd features in Max that cause integration issues with other software. For instance, Max utilizes two methods for creating polygons which can disrupt topology when importing mesh objects from other software. Lastly, while I lack in-depth knowledge about the internal algorithms and their performance impacts, I do acknowledge the emphasis on UX design and features in these software. In that regard max is shockingly behind. Just small ux things like quad modelling in maya or the fact that you can scale in blender using a gizmo like with fdd’s in max without using a modifier makes a shockingly big difference. These features, only get put in if you heavily inveast in ux and that’s probably really expensive. Max is mainly for architecture (thats one market) Maya, blender, houdini are mainly used for games and movies (2 markets). If we look at all there markets, movies and games bring in more capital tougether then architecture. So its a logical that a stronger market would push for more innovation. I even asked bing: ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- „ According to the results from my search tool, the film and video market is bigger than the architecture market in terms of revenue. The global film and video market reached a value of nearly $234.9 billion in 2020⁶, while the global architecture market was valued at $59.9 billion in 2020¹. The film and video market is also expected to grow faster than the architecture market in the forecast period of 2020-2030, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5.8% for the film and video market⁶ and 4.8% for the architecture market². However, both markets are influenced by various factors, such as technological innovations, consumer preferences, economic conditions, and environmental concerns, which may affect their future performance and size. „ Source: Conversation with Bing, 2023. 09. 29. Regardless of software that knowledge to this day is revelant and universal. Not even houdini has learning materials as comprehensive and in depth as that dvd series (even thought its old af!). I am really sorry that project stopped. Thank you so much for replying I deeply enjoy talking and learning more about this topic!

Stick to one software, use it daily. You'll find a way. They're all "good" at what they're supposed to do. These days Max is amazing, that's my daily use tool. :) I tried Blender, I took CGBoost courses, some slick content, couldn't vibe with it. Each to their own. I'm not heavily into the technical aspects either but I've never had any issues with max's performance post version 2021. It's doing good.@@gergolaky3624

@@gergolaky3624 Ok you are missing a lot of information. First off Arch Vis isn't the only other market by a long shot. Second, what version of Max were you using last if you were using Chris Thomas's videos as reference as those were around Max 7. Third, Max does not use a linear workflow, users can use a linear workflow if they don't understand the software. Maya for instance is way more linear than Max. Max's stack allows for non linear workflows. Fouth, "Max is mainly for architecture (thats one market) Maya, blender, houdini are mainly used for games and movies (2 markets)" I will have to have a talk with my friends at ILM and many other companies and tell them that you said that Max is mostly Arch Vis. Fifth, "procedural workflows offered by Maya and Houdini" Maya...Procedural like Houdini? Where? I can see by a lot of your comments you believe that Max has never had an update and still works the same as it did in Max 7. I could make the statement that the IK solvers do not work in Maya because they didn't work in Maya 4. Your information is so far out of date I don't even know where to start. And if you think the only change has been the Array Modifier or updates to Chamfer, once again, way out of date and you have never tried to keep up.
