For those not using a CGM, keep in mind that high morning BG could be the dawn effect.

Before I had a CGM I would check immediately upon waking and it was usually lower than 30 minutes after waking up. Now with CGM I am noticing the same thing. Good point on dawn phenomena.

Good tip. I have done some other changes that have surprise me in a positive way. 1. Adding Vitamin B1 to my daily diet. 2. Injecting the insulin in my upper arms and my thigh. The last weeks have my glucose been good between 37 - 58 through the day and night. And I can just hope it last for a while. And finally: Love your videos. 💝

I love your very helpful videos, Christel. I’ve learned so much from you and have implemented what I’ve learned into my life and have been doing so much better thanks to you!!! Like you mentioned in this video, “we’re all different.” Unfortunately, in my case, my sugars spike with ALL milk products, including Cottage Cheese and no-sugar yogurt. Rice Cakes spike my sugars too. I can’t do the Halo ice creams either. I do eat dinner early and am sometimes hungry before bed. I just drink some water to help fill the void so that I am able to get to sleep. I eat very low carb and since I’ve had my CGM, it’s been a game changer. I am regulating my blood sugars better than I ever had for the past 32 years. I love all your advice and reviews and recipes. I like your snack idea of 1/2 cup cottage cheese with a little cucumber and tomato. I used to love cottage cheese until I realized how it spikes my sugars so badly. But I’m going to try your little combination here and take more insulin to see how I do. I appreciate all your suggestions and encouragement…and yes, as you mention here, keeping a logbook is SO VERY valuable. Thank you, Christel. You’re the best!!!

I have noticed if I eat pasta for dinner even at 5 pm, yes the insulin will cover it for about 4 hours, then I wake up with a higher level in the morning than usual. I can only guess that pasta takes a veeerrry long time to fully turn to glucose in the body. I do take long acting insulin and don't want to increase it or it drops too low about 1 am and my cgm starts holloring at me then. I like your yogurt theory, I also use yogurt as a tool in my diabetic tool box.

Thank you for this great video. I have been using Novolog Aspart sliding scale for 28 days, but my sugar is always spiking about 230 and sometimes staying up for several hours. Last night it was high about 4 hours. I didn’t sleep well. I know I ate wrong. I took 3 units of novolog before I ate and thought it might keep it down to a fair level. No telling what it would have gotten to while I was asleep without the insulin. My biggest problem seems to be snacks. I am type 2. I love my Libre3 CGM. But I do finger sticks to double check occasionally before treating the rise. I used to be a nurse and helped diabetic patients, so I understand a lot about diabetes. It’s just different when it’s your own body. I don’t remember ever learning about that dual rise. It makes sense to me now. That’s what has been happening to me. I am learning so much from you. I am very tall and don’t appear heavily over weight, but I do need to lose a few pounds. I love cottage cheese and rice cakes. I never thought about adding the veggies. I will now and I’m going to order some of those macadamia snacks too. I will also start having earlier and smaller dinners. Thank you!

Not sure if we've discussed this, but have you considered trying carb counting instead or sliding scale? It might be easier for you to get to the accurate dose. Some find it to be more work, but the outcome might be worth it
@sharonsplace5146
@sharonsplace5146 23 күн бұрын
@ yes I’ve been thinking about it and I have an app on my phone that I enter my foods into and it gives me the carbs. I just never thought about why the insulin works quicker and better during earlier meals but not at night. Now I know. It clicked when you mentioned slower digestion. I had forgotten about that.

Just ordered some Macadamia Bars and Nuts to keep for snacks. I am a big believer in having available proportioned snacks. Thanks for the discount code. It sure helps the A1C to have blood sugar stay in lower range and steady all night. I try keep mine 80-100.

My problem is that sometimes my blood sugar tanks overnight. If my blood sugar is close to 100 at bedtime, it's a risk that my Dexcom will wake me up with that annoying CLANGING during the night. But when I'm really sleepy, I'm not interested in eating anything.

@DiabetesStrong
@DiabetesStrong 16 күн бұрын
I’ve seen craving described as often being for a certain food and being more of a desire while hunger is a physical feeling. If in doubt I’ll sometimes wait a bit before eating anything. If disgracing myself removes the need to eat its most often not actual hunger
@StarvingMyselfToLIFE
@StarvingMyselfToLIFE 16 күн бұрын
@DiabetesStrong I know you will strenuously disagree, and I'm perfectly fine with that, but i don't think we actually experience true hunger..most of us have enough stored energy to last 30-50 days....Conditioning the body to switch from exogenous, to endogenous sources of energy is what's required..

A strategic bedtime snack can help maintain stable blood sugar levels throughout the night. The ideal combination should include high protein, healthy fats, and limited carbohydrates. Some excellent options include a hard-boiled egg with whole-grain crackers, low-fat cheese with whole-wheat crackers, or sugar-free Greek yogurt. Nuts and seeds are particularly beneficial due to their protein and healthy fat content. It's important to understand that blood sugar naturally fluctuates overnight due to the dawn phenomenon (between 3:00-8:00 AM) and the Somogyi effect (a significant drop between 2:00-3:00 AM)1. Keep portions small to avoid disrupting sleep. For more health and wellness topics, check out our channel. We have a new video up every Friday!

It's so unfortunate as doing finger sticks is the only way to know if what you're doing is working. A1c is so high level. I sometimes buy strips OTC at my local pharmacy, those are about 21 Cent a strip

USA medicare will only pay for 2 test strips a day? Can your doctor do something to get you more? Contact the American Diabetes Association and your representative! That's so penny wise pound foolish. They should be encouraging and rewarding people who are trying to manage their blood sugar as well as possible. Can you get a CGM?

@@DiabetesStrong sad for numerous reasons: the dairy industry is terrible for the environment, terrible for the animals and surely not the best, in the long term for human health. The hormones (especially estrogen which is terrible for boys, girls, women and men), antibiotics, communicable viruses, artificial insemination methods (basically repeated rape of an animal), early death due to inhumane slaughtering methods at an unnaturally young age, separation of the babies from their mother, use of milk meant for a bovine calf and not a human, poor working conditions for dairy farm workers that have a high rate of PTSD and suicide as well as low pay, many times taking advantage of people that may be undocumented, don't have health care, don't have social security, use of grazing land that should be wild, that takes away precious top soil from the land, releases methane into the atmosphere, creates excess waste products into the water and land, all to create a heavily subsidized product that can be easily replaced for less that is healthier, does not require cruelty, and conserves the environment. That's a very short summary of why I'm sad.
