I was let go from a $40/hour job with unpredictable hours (and wage theft) and had to take a $17/hour minimum wage job that doesn't pay overtime. Started Uber today and made $175 in 6.5 hours which is just under $27/hour. I enjoyed it. I'm sure it gets old but I like not having a boss and making my own hours.
@basementracer3 ай бұрын
No, no you don't make $27phr, take out your expenses and see what you make per hour. The calculation you did is designed to make you feel better about your choice. Now look at it again with reality as your guide and you will notice you a off. Account for wear and tear, insurance for the car, Gas, food and car wash each day unless you drive around in a dirty POS. Then you will have your earnings. You will notice a very big difference. True some of it is deferred cost, wear and tear springs to mind but it must be accounted for. Uber and Lyft love statements like yours, they gloss over the real earnings and make it sound like a dream job for a lot of people. Truth is, you can make good money but only a fool ignores their expenses associated with gaining the funds.

$17 an hour minimum wage? Even the state minimum in California isn't that high. Must be in a specific city in NY or Cali. Minimum wage is still $7.25 in a lot of states.

Even if you account for the wear and tear on your vehicle and gas, the fact is…now you have the ability to CHOOSE when you’re gonna work… it’s really hard to put a price on freedom…but if you want to do the calculations on the wear and tear on the car… I suppose you could use that as your price for freedom…Let’s not forget that when you make $40 an hour, all the taxes that get taken out of your checks… I’m estimating even though you made 40 you were probably only taken home about 30 an hour… anyways, my job is $30 an hour and working 10+ hours six days a week… if I can make enough to be happy and live free and take days off whenever I want…then I say I’m totally OK with the car and holding the costs for the wear and tear and gas costs.
@Jay-Zyn2 ай бұрын
@basementracer7622 if you know how to do your taxes correctly and take all your possible write offs, you will get a tax return. If your paying the irs at the end of the year your missing deductions. Really, the only thing that sucks is wear and tear on your vehicle.

Yes. You rented a car with unlimited miles for X dollars and X time period. You can drive where and when and whoever you want as many miles as you want. "But Uber says..." Uber didn't rent you the car, and Uber didn't write the rental agreement. It's not Uber's car, and it's not Uber's say. However you get the discount, if you pay the rental fee, you are obligated only to the rental contract and the rental company. And the rental company isn't Uber.

Maybe in the first few weeks the app will give you bonuses and good paying rides (that’s how the algorithm works to lure in new drivers or drivers who didn’t drive for a few months) but after those few weeks you’ll be left with long ass drives that pays nothing. I think it’s an excellent job to have available to fall back on. But to learn it you have to do it intensively for a while. Just choose good neighborhoods and you won’t have many bizarre experiences. You will also get better ratings, be more appreciated and get better tips. Avoid the bars at closing time if you’re a lady. Also be respectful to people no matter who they are. Be nice to people, and they will usually be nice back to you most of the time. Get educated with these videos before you go out there and you will save yourself a lot of trouble. You will also be less likely to get deactivated. It’s a great adventure and you will meet extraordinary people who you would never meet ordinarily. You will learn more about your community that you may have have ever known all your life. A movie could be made about your unforgettable adventures. You will be able to stay home or go on vacation whenever you want and no one will miss you. You can earn as much money as you want. You just have to apply yourself and do the work. But don’t work too much and don’t drive tired or when you’re burned out. If you get into an accident and you have passengers in the car, you could easily be looking at a lawsuit, which would be a huge headache for you. And you would be deactivated until the accident was sorted out also, even if it wasn’t your fault. Driving in the evening there are less cars on the roads in big cities and in my opinion less chance of getting in an accident then driving in rush-hour traffic. But you have to pay attention at night and watch out for the other drivers and keep your eyes on the road. Sticking to the airport is a good place to start for a newbie if they want to avoid trouble. Most airport passengers just are tired and want to go home. But don’t pick up anybody who says that their phone died and they’ll pay you cash or any other scam or they offer you cash. First of all you would get deactivated if the Rideshare folks found out, second of all, it’s illegal to pick people up off the street that way , also, there would be no paper trail of who the person is and you don’t know what might happen if there was an incident. And lastly, you can’t be certain they will even pay you after you take them where they’re going. Just don’t do it. But by all means follow the tips given by these seasoned drivers on the Rideshare guy and the information shared by Harry Campbell… and take a course in rideshare driving for newbies. It will be time wisely spent, and will prepare you to be ready for most anything. It’s a great adventure, and I highly recommend it.

There is no business acumen barrier to entry in ride share like in other small businesses. So, there's gonna be all types who try it... and 90% will probably be what I call "car title loan" drivers. They're selling miles on their vehicles at cost or less for "pay today"... and pay right back later. Smarter people know what their vehicle costs to drive per mile and they sell driven miles at a price that adequately compensates their time after cost. 90% of ALL small businesses fail... why should ride share be any different? Most people are just cut out of employee cloth; they can't be their own boss.
